Venice Gets Another Big One:
Greg Jones Checks In--(April 13, 1999)

Venice High School, which this year had a very tall front-line, including Joe Dural (6'-8" Sr. F), Glen McGowan (6'-8" Sr. SG/SF) and David Vance (6'-8" Sr. F/C) looks to have found a potential replacement for at least one of these guys.  Greg Jones (6'-8" So. F/C) who formerly attended Montclair last year as a freshman and moved this past season, attending La Sierra (where he didn't play) has now checked in over at Venice.

Greg is the brother of 7'-3" L.A. Clipper center Keith Closs, and apparently has moved back in with his brother who lives out in the Westchester district.  Jones and Keith are pretty dissimilar as far as body types:   Keith is tall and lanky, almost to the point of being skinny, while Jones is just a huge kid, wide and strong. We haven't seen Greg play since last season but it appears he's gotten even a little bigger than he was when he played with his former ARC team which also featured David Gale (5'-11" Fr. PG), Craig Weinstein (5'-10" Fr. PG), Charlie Kranzdorf (6'-2" Fr. SG/SF), Brian Trump (6'-2" Fr. F), Matt Llewellyn (6'-1" Fr. SG), and others from that same team.  And unless Greg has gotten a lot more skilled, he'll still have a lot of work left to do on improving his footwork and body control; but for a 15 or 16 year old, he's got impressive potential, and will definitely help Venice next season which should feature some great players, including several excellent returning shooters like Steven Brown (6'-5" So. SG/SF), Montel Duhon (6'-3" Jr. SG), and Kevin Elleby (5'-10" Fr. PG).
