Our Bad. . . James Wright Did
Sign A NLOI In the Fall--(April 15, 1999)
Ok, so we made a mistake. Shoot us. Yesterday, in writing about Rudy Williams, the latest Long Beach State signee, we wrote that James Wright hadn't signed yet, but had only given a verbal commitment. We were wrong.
But can you blame us, really? We reported the fact that James had given a verbal to Long Beach back in November. But then we heard and read nothing more about it, despite talking to James and his high school coach Randolph Simpson abut a dozen times through the course of the year. Well, after posting the article about Rudy Williams, one of the posters on our message board alerted us to the fact that James had given more than his word, but had signed back in the fall. So in order to confirm it, we spoke today with the Long Beach State coaches, and they acknowledged that indeed James had actually signed in the early period, and upon being informed that he had, we let them know that Long Beach had not issued any press release, as is customary with most signings. At least not one we ever saw, and the coaches we spoke with agreed that they didn't recall one either.
Well, press release or not, there is no doubt about it: The LA City Section Player of the Year, All-State First Team selection player, one of the quickest guards on the West Coast, if not the country, has in fact signed with Long Beach State.
A belated congratulations to James and to the 49'ers
