San Diego Union Tribune All-San
Diego Section Girls Teams--(April 6, 1999)
If you thought the Southern Section had a lot of "all-this" or "all-that" selections, not to mention the LA Times' multiple All-Area teams, and the OC Register's "All-Orange County" teams, and the other selections from the other papers, like the Riverside P-E, the Santa Barbara News-Press (which we never managed to get hold of), or the Daily News' All-Valley/Ventura County teams, the San Diego Section of CIF isn't far behind. We've already posted the "All-CIF SDS" Division teams (Boys) and Athletes of the Year, and the Hall of Champions "All-San Diego" teams (1st, 2nd, & 3rd Teams--Boys), and we're in the process of typing up the Girls' Teams. But then we came across the San Diego Union Tribune All-San Diego boys & girls teams. And because we know that in a few days these will be pulled off the U-T's own website, we're posting them up here (hey, remember "Fair Use" guys, we don't make a nickel off this, and we'd urge everyone to buy your paper anyway, but for most of us it's outside the area where we can buy anything but the Sunday edition which gets flown in to most airports in SoCal). Anyway, here's who the San Diego Union Tribune picked for their "All-San Diego" teams:

Nicole Bromley | Rancho Bernardo | 5'-7" | Senior | 14.5 ppg |
Mischa Clark | Mt. Carmel | 5'-9" | Senior | 19.8 ppg |
Malaika Underwood | La Jolla | 5'-10" | Senior | 15.1 ppg |
San Diego Union Tribune All-San Diego Player of the Year |

San Diego Union Tribune All-San Diego Newcomer of the Year | ||||
Jamie Campbell | Mt. Carmel | 5'-11" | Fr. | 7.8 ppg |
The Union Tribune also did nice bios on each of the first team players. Here they are:
Triola Alexander (6'-1" Jr. F/C) Kearny, 29.9 ppg
A two-year All-County first team member, Alexander was the state's No. 2 scorer with a pair of 50-point games during the season and a whopping 40.0 scoring average during the post-season playoffs. Even eventual Southern California Regional champion North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake couldn't contain her as the Komet sensation scored 46 of her team's 62 points.
LaToya Bristow (5'-10" Jr. PG) El Camino, 16.9 ppg
Only the fourth player in school history to exceed the 1,000-point plateau, Bristow has helped lead the Wildcats to two consecutive Division I title games, including this season's 56-48 win over El Capitan. The school's all-time assists leader, Bristow's sparkling play has been a key ingredient in El Camino's 31-game unbeaten streak in Avocado League play.
Nicholle Bromley (5'-7" Sr. SG/SF) Rancho Bernardo, 14.5 ppg
The Palomar League's Player of the Year, Bromley's shooting and stellar defense have resulted in two section titles for the Broncos in her four-year varsity career. With intentions of playing at UC San Diego next year, Bromley was outstanding down the stretch, scoring 33 points in a double-overtime win over rival Mt. Carmel that gave Rancho Bernardo the league title.
Mischa Clark (5'-9" Sr. SG/SF) Mt. Carmel, 19.8 ppg
The section's fourth-leading scorer this season, Clark fueled the county's highest-scoring offense (72.5). She scored 25 or more points nine times to pace a Sundevil team that won 18 straight games to open the season. An oustanding student and volleyball player, Clark will attend the University of Pacific next year.
Malaika Underwood (5'-10" Sr. SG/SF) La Jolla, 15.1 ppg
Coming off an All-County season on the volleyball court, Underwood was the heart and soul of the Vikings. Quick and agile inside, she also was a deadly outside shooter when forced away from the basket. The Western League Player of the Year came up big in the big games and was a force on the boards despite giving away several inches to opposing centers.
Jamie Campbell (5'-11" Fr. F) Mt. Carmel, 7.8 ppg
If Campbell was intimidated by the level of play in the Palomar League, she never let on. In eight of the 24 games she competed in this year, Campbell scored in double figures, including a game-high 16 in a victory over Division I semifinalist La Costa Canyon. On a team featuring such standouts as Clark and Lika Black, Campbell finished as the Sundevils' third-leading scorer.
San Diego Union Tribune All-San Diego Second Team |
||||
Player | School | Class | Height | Avg. PPG |
Lika Black | Mt. Carmel | Senior | 5'-7" | 17.3 ppg |
Brandi Collato | SF Christian | Soph | 5'-7" | 26.5 ppg |
Oni Mauga | El Camino | Senior | 5'-10" | 13.3 ppg |
Shannon Torregrosa | University City | Senior | 6'-1" | 14.9 ppg |
Abby Vaughan | La Costa Canyon | Senior | 5'-6" | 12.7 |
San Diego Union Tribune All-San Diego Third Team |
||||
Breezy Ambort | University City | Soph. | 5'-8" | 13.9 ppg |
Kirsten Grimm | Bishop's | Junior | 5'-10" | 16.5 ppg |
Holly Houchin | Ramona | Senior | 5'-9" | 15.7 ppg |
Nathalie Karns | Eastlake | Junior | 5'-3" | 14.9 ppg |
Sara Wilkins | Rancho Bernardo | Senior | 5'-7" | 9.8 ppg |
And the Union-Tribune also carried a nice story, by Steve Brand and Mick McGrane (who are UT Staff writers) about Detrick Watts and the Girls' player of the year, Kendrick Rhea. We've edited the story to present the stuff pertaining only to Rhea and here it is, from the March 22, 1999 Union-Tribune:
Numbers game: U-T All-County basketball team:
Rhea has always been about numbers. A grade-point average of 4.8, an attraction to a future in engineering, an ability to reduce basketball to its simplest terms. "I don't like putting a lot of work into practice if you're not going to do it on the court during games," said Rhea, a senior. "I've always believed in a hard work ethic. I've never been the type of person to give up very easily."
Indeed, it was opponents who frequently surrendered, caving in under the relentless play of Rhea, who will attend Santa Clara next year. She concludes her career at El Capitan with 1,994 points and 1,281 rebounds. In leading the Vaqueros this season to their first appearance in a section title game since 1978, Rhea averaged 20.7 points and 14 rebounds per game.
El Capitan advanced to the Division I title game after beating Rancho Bernardo, a team that had been ranked No. 1 in the county for all but one week of the regular season. Rhea finished with 25 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots against the Broncos.
"As a team, I don't think anybody really gave us a chance to do anything," said Rhea, whose Vaqueros were ultimately vanquished by El Camino in the title game. "It wasn't an easy season. Practice was hard, because we only had eight players on the team. Coach (Jim Mottershaw) told us he's had teams with better talent, but never one with more heart. We got along well and we got it done."
A three-time All-CIF selection with equal talent at both ends of the floor, Rhea set the stage early in her career when she was tabbed the state's Freshman of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports. As a junior, Rhea averaged 19.8 points and 13.1 rebounds per game. She also missed 10 games with an injured hand, during which time the Vaqueros went 1-9. When she returned, the team proceeded to go 16-4.
"I've never really set too many goals, so I don't really know if I've exceeded my own expectations,? said the 6-foot-1 Rhea, who as testament to her athleticism set the school record in the shot put last week with an effort of 39 feet, 11 inches. "I've just always tried to lead by example."
