Future Stars Springtime
Jamboree May 1 & 2--(April 28, 1999)

Fentriss Winn, coach of the San Diego Future Stars let us know about a small local tournament which will be taking place this Saturday and Sunday, May 1 & 2 on the campus of University High School in Irvine called, of all things, the "Future Stars Springtime Jamboree."  Unfortunately, we don't have a schedule of games. Instead we were only provided with a list of teams and participants.   If you want the schedule or further information, contact Fentriss Winn at (760) 726-4183.

And while it's "small" in terms of the numbers of teams attending, some of the best in SoCal will be playing, including the San Diego Future Stars, The Hood (Dominguez), Belmont Shore (Dinos Trigonis' team), QBL-Lakewood (which is basically the Artesia high school team), 805 Express (George Albanez' team from Santa Barbara, Ventura, Oxnard & Bakersfield)  and the Bakersfield Power (we have no idea who they are).

The list of prospective players reads like the typical who's who of local basketball, and the usual suspects will be there, including: Travon Bryant (6'-8" Jr. F) from Long Beach Jordan, who should be taking the SAT on Saturday and not playing ball (but what do we know); Tyson Chandler (7'-0" So. C) from Dominguez; Wesley Stokes (5'-10" Jr. PG) from Long Beach Poly; Nick Booker (6'-5" Jr. SG/SF) from the Bishop's School; Jack Martinez (6'-7" So. F), Amaury Fernandez (6'-9" So. F) and others from Artesia, Ellis Myles (6'-7" Jr. F) Compton; Alfred Williams (6'-3" Jr. PG/SG) from Bakersfield; Tommy Johnson (6'-4" Jr. SG) from Crenshaw;  Larry Johnson (6'-5" Jr. SG) Dominguez;  Geormel Benson (6'-5" So. SG) from Lincoln in San Diego; Keith Brooks (6'-6" Jr. PF) from Dominguez; Andre Hazel (5'-11" Jr. PG); Steve Moore (6'-3" Jr. SG) Dominguez; Jamall Williams (6'-6" So. F) from Corona Centennial; Ryan Mollins (6'-5" Jr. SG) from Redondo Union (yes, he's transferred from Loyola); Cedric Thompkins (6'-6" Jr. F) from Dominguez; John Steffanson (6'-3" Fr. SG) from Artesia; and Micha McKinney (6'-2" Jr. PG/SG) from Dominguez.

And in case you just noticed, this list also contains many of the same guys on the list for the WSS Scholastic Hoops Jam, so it should be really interesting to see where everyone shows up on Saturday, and hopefully, there won't be any games scheduled on Saturday evening in the Future Stars Jamboree.  And come to think of it, we're guessing that those who have committed to play at the WSS thingee will be there instead, because the Warehouse Shoe Sale Hoops Jam is much more than just basketball:  At 11:00 a.m.  (which is prime playing time at tournaments) the WSS guys will be rolling out on a big bus to make their SoCal tour of several local Boys' & Girls' Club facilities.  So if a player isn't going to Indiana, and has committed to play at the WSS event, we're wondering whether they'll be able to be in two places at once.

But if you've got questions about who is playing, and what time the games will be held,  call Fentriss Winn at (760) 726-4183 for further information.
