Crenshaw's Armand Thomas To LACC Or
San Jose State As Prop 48? Who Knows?--(April 23, 1999)
Yesterday, Mike Miller at PacWestHoops did a small recap of San Jose State's recruiting thus far, including all of their signings, and buried in the report, along with announcments of the signings of Rashaad Hines (5'-10" So.PG) from North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, who signed a letter-of-intent which was received by SJSU yesterday, and the prior signings of Cory Powell (6'-5" So. F) from Independence College, Billy Landram (6'-7" So. F) from Olympic College, Brett Lilly (6'-5" Sr. F) from Riceville (Iowa) High School, Darnell Williams (6'-8" So. F/C) from Long Beach City College, Terry Shelton (6'-0" Sr. G) from Crowley (Texas) High School, Les Norman (6'-0" Sr. G) from Lebanon (Ill.) High School, LaKeith Henderson (6'-6" So. F) from Chaffey College, Ozzie Lockhart (6'-0" So. G) from Cuesta College, Lawrence Felder (6'-10" So. C) and Ronald Strange (6'-8" So. F) both from Fullerton, there was the name of Armand Thomas in between Les Norman and Brett Lilly. Which had us doing a sort of double-take.
Armand Thomas?
Sure, why not. Armand (6'-9" Sr. SF/PF) from Crenshaw, doesn't have the necessary grades to enroll at a division I school and be eligible, and the word that we had been hearing all spring was that he would enroll at Los Angeles City College and would be playing next season for coach Mike Miller (the other Mike Miller). Armand has been working all of the Rockfish games, running the shot-clock and generally helping out around the LACC gym along with teammate Ryan Sims (6'-9" Sr. PF) who just might be the most underrecruited big man in all of California.
Here's what Mike wrote as a part of his San Jose Recruiting article:
Armand Thomas, 6-8 SF/PF Los Angeles (CA) Crenshaw: Armand will enroll at San Jose State as a Prop 48 this year, so he won't be eligible until the 2000-2001 season. A tall player with good quickness and athleticism, Armand was underutilized in h.s. and gives the Spartans a sleeper for the future. He's active and plays better facing the basket, but he hits the glass hard and plays good defense inside. Armand has the potential to develop into a very good starter for San Jose State down the road and should be considered a steal.
We've tried to get some confirmation from San Jose State officially about whether Armand has signed a letter of intent yet, but the coaches were out and the SID didn't have the information available, which may just mean that the LOI hasn't arrived at the school yet. We should find out shortly.
