division 4 southern regionals

Here are the first round matchups in the Southern Regionals for Division IV in the State Championship Tournament. All first round quarterfinal games will take place this coming Tuesday, March 9. All games are played at 7:30 p.m.

The seeded teams are Horizon No. 1, Verbum Dei No. 2, Serra No. 3, and Chowchilla No. 4. We're a little surprised that Verb would be seeded No. 2, but in the long run, it's not really going to matter and this could be one of the best divisions of any of them. Twentynine Palms was surprisingly strong last Friday night but no match for Serra, and given what we know about Horizon, we'd say that the No. 1 seed is going to be tough to get past. Crossroads at Chowchilla is a puzzler for us, and we wish we could get up there for the game (we can't) because we'd like to see firsthand this team that everyone in the Central Valley is talking about that is rated so highly. Bishops at Serra could be the most even matchup of the first round in just about any division, and we've got to have some sympathy for Corcoran because we just don't see Verbum Dei losing given the way they're playing right now. But we've been wrong before, and we'll probably be wrong again before the finals are played.

Note that an asterisk (*) indicates the home team. Remember that whoever wins this bracket, the finals in Division IV (both boys & girls) will be in San Diego this year at Cox Arena, along with Division I (also boys & girls). The other Divisions will be played at The Pyramid at Cal State Long Beach.
