CIF D-V SoCal Regional Final: Santa
Clara
Beats El Cajon Christian, 93-55--(March 13, 1999)
This game was never close. Really. Never. BJ Ward hit for 24 points, Nick Jones 27, as the Saints overpowered and overwhelmed the Patriots. Jones shot 12 for 18 from the field, 1-3 from three point range and 2-2 from the line, while Ward was 12-17 from the field, and 0-2 from the line. Each had 3 steals, and Ward had 5 rebounds, while Jones had 10 boards (8 defensive). Overall, Santa Clara shot .646 from the field in the game, and an astounding 22-29 in the second half (.759).
This was a mismatch from the beginning, as Santa Clara broke out to a 23-7 first quarter lead, and then scored another 20 points in the second. And while the Patriots finally found the basket in the second quarter, largely on the shooting of Luke Cully who had 7 first half points and Jon Henkel with 8, scoring 17 in the second quarter, it was too little too late, and this game was out of reach as Santa Clara took a 43-24 lead into the locker room at the break.
In the third quarter, the Saints turned it on, but not quite as hard, scoring only 19, but they managed to hold El Cajon Christian to just 12 points, and in the fourth quarter, sensing blood in the water, the sharks moved in for the final kill: Santa Clara scored an amazing 31points in the fourth quarter, while holding the Patriots to just 19. Santa Clara was quicker, stronger, faster, and just a superior team and that's about all there was to it. Not that the Patriots were bad; they weren't and Tim Brown and John Henkel combined for 34 points normally a good day, but then most teams don't judge what's a "good day" against the Santa Clara standard. On to Sacramento for the Saints, where they will meet the winner of the Calavary Temple-Hoopa Valley game.
