San Bernardino-Riverside All Star Boys
& Girls Games Results--(March 29, 1999)

The 10th Annual San Bernardino-Riverside County All-Star Game was played Friday night at Cajon High, and the best of the boys players and the girls as well showed up.  Well, just about all of the boys showed, and about half the girls, but it was still entertaining.

In the Boys' All-Star Game, Eric Siess (6'-3" Sr. SG), one of the best unsigned seniors anywhere, a shooting machine who holds the single season point total for the Rockfish Spring League, and who may just do it again this year at LACC, and who was named All-County First Team for the past two years in a row, scored 20 points Friday night to lead San Bernardino County to an 82-72 win over Riverside County in the 10th Annual Riverside-San Bernardino High School All-Star Game.

The San Bernardino squad featured Siess from Redlands, San Bernardino Pacific's Chaun Ballard and Redlands East Valley's John Washington.   Ballard hit a three-pointer to give San Bernardino a 68-62 lead with 3:35 left, sparking a 12-2 run. Siess hit a three-pointer to make it 73-64 with 2:37 left and Ballard finished the run with a fastbreak layup with 1:47 left. Riverside pulled within seven points, 77-70, with 1:17 left on consecutive threes by Elsinore's Bobby Russo. But Siess found Ballard open underneath for a layup on the next possession and San Bernardino went on to a 10-point victory.
Neither team had more than a six-point lead until San Bernardino pulled away in the final four minutes. Riverside led 59-54 -- its biggest margin of the game -- early in the fourth quarter on a putback by Cathedral City's Clifton Cooper. Russo led Riverside with 11 points and Norman had 10. Also scoring in double figures for San Bernardino was Ballard (11) and Marquis Revels (10). The full scoring looked like this: RIVERSIDE COUNTY (72) -- Carlyle 5, Norman 10, Peters 4, Lands 0, Mgbeke 2, Russo 11, Walker 8, Waters 5, Cooper 4, Moss 2, Thompson 6, Russ 6, Valencia 7, Gill 2. SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY (82) -- Holmes 5, Buchanan 2, Siess 20, Washington 5, Florence 2, Ballard 11, Burries 7, Mann 6, Revels 10, Burnett 7, James 7. Halftime score -- San Bernardino 36-33. Three-point goals -- Russo 3, Waters, Valencia, Siess 3, Ballard, Washington. Total fouls -- Riverside 13, San Bernardino 5. Fouled out -- none.

At the half there were several contests, including a three-point shooting contest and a slam dunk contest. The three point shooting contest was won by Robbie Collins, who made 10 three pointers in 30 seconds in the preliminary round, and then did it again, making another 10 in 30 seconds to win the final against Rancho Verde's Preston Norman (the leading rebounder in Riverside County this season).  So Collins looks to be one of the best three-point shooters in San Bernardino County or Riverside. Chaun Ballard won the slam dunk contest with a tremendous tomahawk dunk in the finals.

In the Girls' All-Star Game San Bernardino County took advantage of a depleted Riverside County roster and grabbed an easy 50-32 victory.    It was the second straight victory for San Bernardino, which featured five of the county's seven all-county seniors, including Player of the Year Tamara McDonald of Chaffey and first-team player Catrina Taylor from Rialto Eisenhower who scored a game-high 12 points and won most valuable player honors. Riverside had only four of eight all-county selections at the game; POY  Kandace Hunter of Moreno and Kela Peterson of Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon (second team) didn't show for the game.

As a result, without two of Riverside's best shooters, Riverside had a tough time getting going. Eisenhower coach Dave Wolfe didn't really have to do much, and he just let his players run the floor. San Bernardino went on a 21-10 second quarter run, and Riverside never quite came back. Corona's Claudine Auld and Norco's Johnette Moss each scored nine points to lead the Riverside team.  Here's the complete scoring: RIVERSIDE (32) -- Gary 1, Hansen 6, Auld 9, Forster 2, Moss 9, Sepe 4, Anderson 1. SAN BERNARDINO (50) -- Taylor 12, Wolski 6, McDonald 9, Webster 2, Looper 0, Salas 5, Wilson 4, Burns 2, Vargas 3, Navarro 3, Daniels 4. Halftime score -- San Bernardino 33-15. Three-point goals -- Moss, Taylor, Vargas, Navarro. Total fouls -- Riverside 18, San Bernardino 21. Fouled out -- None
