Double Pump Double Take: Jerett Skrifvars &
Other Unsigned Seniors--(March 23, 1999)

When we did our first installment of the Double Pump Shootout report from this past weekend, we realized that we may have overlooked Jerett Skrifvars in our description of the BWBA I team which played this past weekend, and we certainly didn't mean to give him the short end of the stick, because he's a quality young man, and one of the best unsigned wing forwards, a combo shooting guard-small forward.   According to his BWBA coach, Bob Gottlieb, Jerett is "as complete a package as you will find."  Gottlieb writes:

"Besides having excellent physical skills, he is tough hardnosed competitor, with a 4.4 gpa (Valedictorian of Brea H.S.) with 1270 on his SAT scores. He is as smart and sound a player as I have ever coached. He shot 50 % from 3 point range for the year, 78% on the foul line, average 18 ppg the second half of his senior year, can bring the ball up vs. full court man to man press and is a defensive stopper at either the #2 or #3 spots. Superior finisher. To me he is a coaches dream. I would take him any where, and I mean anywhere I coached.

Bob also sent us a letter highlighting several other players on the BWBA team who we may not have described as fully as we might have.  Here's Gottlieb's take on Joseth Dawson (6'-2" Sr. SG/PG) from Fontana:

"Joe Dawson 6'1" Fontana H.S. combo guard/big time downtown shooter with blazing speed Grades 2.91gpa and ACT score of 19. Joe is wiry with superior quickness from an excellent two parent home. Averaged 18ppg this past year. Excellent low major combo guard. He is capable of starting as a freshman at the #2 guard and playing 10-15 minutes as a backup point. In time he will be a starting point as he has all the skills, just needs experience and seasoning at the point."

Bob also reminded us of several other unsigned seniors who have worked with his BWBA program:

"Denver Lopez 6'2' Nogales H.S. very fine point guard. Averaged 15ppg but 8 assists/g. He is an excellent playmaker who sees the floor, can penetrate and score or dish and a solid shooter. Very good all around player. SAT score of 930 with a 2.5gpa. He is a complete offensive package as a point needing only to improve defensively. Excellent low to mid major true point guard. Extremely good kid with excellent overall temperament and attitude."

"Imran Sufi 5'11" true point guard. Brother of Kamran Sufi, 4 year starter at St. Marys under Ernie Kent. Kamran led the WCAC in assists and steals for 4 years. Imran led Mater Dei to the state championship game at the point. Superior dribbler, passer and shooter, needing only to build his body and get stronger. He is a year young and has improved greatly in the past year. Imran should be recruited by all levels, that is low NCAA Div I, as well as D2 and D3. Has a 2.6 gpa and has recently taken the SAT test. Should easily qualify. Super kid from great home. "

"Cameron Jackson 6'2" big physical point guard from Tustin H.S. Cameron is a 4.0gpa and 1270 SAT student who is a true point guard. Though not a big scorer, he knows how to run a team and is potentially a good solid all round point guard at both ends of the floor. Should be recruited by high academic Div I programs as well as D2 and D3s. Great kid from good home."

Remember, the above descriptions are Gottlieb's and not ours, but that's not to say that we disagree with anything he's said and each of these players would make fine D-I college players. College coaches out there who want to get in touch with any of these kids should e-mail Bob Gottlieb at BRWest2@aol.
