Even if it's cold, raining off and on, and not especially nice outside, it's still almost springtime, and that means that it's time for the second installment of the Pump Discovery Shootouts for Spring. Last week was the "unsigned senior" shootout, and that one featured 42 teams, and was attended by more than 60 different colleges and university coaches, both head coaches and assistant coaches.
This weekend, it will be the "all-class" High School Discovery Shootout, featuring seniors and underclassmen, and there will be more than 40 teams at Cal State Dominguez participating in the high school event. We'll have the rosters and the full schedules up shortly (they are still being finalized by Phil and Jan Bryant who actually are the heart and soul of the Pump events) and we'll post them here as soon as we get them.
Because of the overwhelming demand for participation in the high school Discovery Shootout, and the large numbers of JC men's teams wanting to also participate in these NCAA Certified events, the Double Pump staff had to make a choice: Limit the numbers of entries or split the event to two different, but almost adjacent locations to accomodate everyone. They chose the latter, and so the High School Shootout will take place at Dominguez Hills, while the JC men's teams will compete at Compton City College, which is literally about five minutes away, just to the east off the 91 Freeway.
Once again, there will be some big time prospects competing, and a ton of college coaches. Last week, schools represented at the Unsigned Senior Shootout included USC (both Bibby and Silvy Dominguez), San Jose State, Redlands, Oregon State, University of Oregon, Eastern Washington, Wyoming, Humboldt State, UC Davis, UC Riverside, Rider University, University of San Francisco, University of Santa Clara, Pepperdine, UC Irvine, Biola, So. Cal College, Arizona, Arizona State, Western Washington, BYU-Hawaii, Reno Nevada, Wyoming, Northern Arizona, University of Missouri-Kansas City, West Virginia, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, and many others. And with the addition of the Friday Fullcourt Press Spring Shootout, and the Rockfish Spring League on Saturday and Sunday, there is more than enough hoops action to satisfy even the most hard-core basketball fanatic. Oh, and if you want to see the younger guys play, don't forget about the 4D League at Leuzinger & South Bay High Schools.
Without question though, the largest and most diverse group of talent will be at the Double Pump Spring Discovery Shootouts this weekend. Again, we'll have the rosters and the schedules up shortly. Stay tuned.
