West Wins McDonald's All-American Game;
Jordan's Scoring Record Falls--(March 24, 1999)

Tonight was the McDonald's All-American High School game.   In a fun and entertaining exhibition which was marred only by an ankle injury to Donnell Harvey (6'-7" Sr. C/PF) from Randolph-Clay, GA, who came down on Jason Kapono's foot while contesting a rebound, the West won 141-128.  And no, Kapono was not injured by Harvey's mis-step. Jason didn't score a lot, but had some nice passes and hit a couple of nice layups off of some very pretty back-door feeds from Jonathan Bender and from Casey Jacobsen, who had 15 points at the half, and scored a couple more times in the second half.

But the Big News was that not only was Michael Jordan's McDonald's All-American jersey No. 23 retired at halftime, but so was his scoring record, one  which stood for 18 years. In the 1981 game, Jordan scored 30 points, including shooting 13 field goals, the most ever in the game. But tonight, about 20 minutes after retiring the jersey was retired at the half, the record was broken by Jonathan Bender (6'-11" Sr. C) from Picayune Memorial, in Mississippi, who has commited to Mississippi State who scored 31 points, breaking the record with about 23 seconds left to play in the game.

If you didn't get to see it, the game will be re-broadcast. Check your local listings for ESPN.
