Horizon Beats Twentynine Palms 75-62--(March 9, 1999)
One of our readers, Dan Stolebarger posted the following message (which he also sent us by e-mail), with some sketchy details, and, best of all a BOX SCORE!. Here's the most pertinent information from his message:
Horizon began its quest for the D4 State Championship with a methodical win over a very game Tewntynine Palms Team. What amounted to a game on a neutral site, since the State CIF refuse to allow Horizon to use its Home court, the Panthers started off a bit sluggish. But the game was never really in doubt as Senior Detrick Watts and Ryan Fellows led the way. Wayne Bernard missed all of the third quarter and half of the fourth with a minor injury but was instrumental down the stretch as the Panthers shot free throws to put the game out of reach.
Box Score
Horizon 75
Bolden 11, Venegas 2, Jensen 4, Fellows 25, Schloss 2, Bernard 11, Watts 20
Twentynine Palms 62
Harkey 9, Harris 4, Cotton 7, Buchanan 17, Phillips 9, Morton 16
Oh, and if anyone can tell us all why Zack Jones (son of the coach at Horizon) doesn't seem to be playing with the team any longer, we'd be really interested in learning the details and what happened to him, because he was certainly one of their better players in the early preseason.
Horizon will now play Crossroads for the upper
bracket semifinal in the Southern Regionals, and one of these two teams will advance to
Saturday's Southern Regional Final game at Cox Arena. We'll have a full game report
soon.
