SoCalHoops High School News
Frenso Bee's All-Fresno/ All-Central
Section
Teams & Player Of The Year--(March 30, 1999)
We got the following from our friend Marty Hartwig today, who thought SoCalHoops' readers would be in the Fresno Bee's rendition of best high school players locally. They didn't really specify whether it was All-Central Section or just the Fresno area, but it's still an impressive list. Here's who they had listed:
First Team:
DeShawn Stevenson, Washington Union (Jr.) - Also named Player
of the Year, averaged 22 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals.
Willie Johnson, Edison (Sr.) - Scored in double figures every game, school game (52), season (689) and career (1903) scoring records.
Shamell Stallworth, Washington Union (Sr.) - averaged 19.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 2.7 steals.
Chris Hernandez, Clovis West (So.) - averaged 12.9 points, 181 assists, 146 of 188 free throws.
Ash Knowlton, Clovis West (Sr.) - averaged 8.6
points, 5.9 assists.
Vonn Webb, Washington Union - Coach of the Year, 109-15 in 4 years at Union, 4
straight league and section titles, two state championships.
Second Team:
Charlie Medley, Yosemite (Sr.)
Charlie Rodriguez, Clovis West (Fr.)
Dustin Schultz, Exeter (Sr.)
Chris Sims, Clovis (Jr.)
Coupe Taylor, Washington Union (Sr.)
No real surprises here, but it's too bad Carvell Wafer didn't at least make the
Second Team. It took him a while to get going in the regular season (recovering from 2
broken wrists is kind of tough), but he really turned it up in the playoffs and did a
fantastic job on Kansas-bound Andrew Gooden in the state championship game.
Our thanks to Marty for letting us know about these selections, and congratulations to
everyone selected.
