Kyle Dodd Commits To Arizona State--(March 22, 1999)
Bob Gottlieb of BWBA, who has coached Kyle Dodd (6'-0" Sr. PG) for years in his Branch West Basketball Academy, writes to us that the Brea H.S. and 4 year Branch West Academy product visited Arizona State this past weekend and verbally committed to the Sun Devils. Here's what Bob sent us:
Recruited hard by Utah, Portland Pepperdine, Hawaii, Sacramento State, Baylor as well as Arizona State, Kyle led Brea High School to a spectacular 27-2 record and was chosen 1st. team All Orange County. As a junior, Kyle played behind another well regarded BWBA product, Chris McMillan, who started as a freshman at Wyoming. Kyle had an excellent summer (Adidas Big Time Tourney in Las Vegas) playing for Doug Gottlieb, Oklahoma State point guard. Doug helped Kyle refine his point guard skills and develop the self confidence he needed which carried over into his senior year.
Kyle had a super visit to Portland the previous week, where he would have stepped in as a freshman and started. Rob Chavez, Rick Majerus and Rob Evans all visited the Dodd home this past week. Utah's entire staff saw him play and loved him and Kyle was well aware that Utah with Rick Majerus is one of the top 10 programs in the USA. However, Utah has Gary Colbert, a potential Andre Miller-clone sitting out as a Prop 48 this year, and the Utes also signed a JUCO point guard as well. Coach Majerus was honest with Kyle and indicated they would like to red shirt him the first year.
Kyle is the total package. He is a tremendous penetrator and excellent shooter with superior ball handling skills. He knows he needs to get much stronger and build his body. At Arizona State, he will compete for playing time, probably will play a backup role for a year or two, but he will eventually be the starting point guard on an up and coming Sun Devil team. Rob Evans did a miraculous job at Mississippi and had a solid first year at ASU. He and his staff have had a banner recruiting year. Look for big things from Arizona State in the future.
