CIF State Tourney: SoCal Division IV
Regional Quarterfinal Details--(March 10, 1999)

Unbelievable:  This Division is the worst reported of any that we came across. Some big games in this division, but not much coverage for any of them.  The worst was Verbum Dei, which got one sentence in the Los Angeles Times, which had 19 words in it.  No box, no line score, no stats, and no narrative of what happened at the game.  But then when you've got a 45 point win, what can you say?  And as for the rest of the games, what little coverage there was could be found in just a couple of papers:  The San Diego U-T, the LA Times, and the Daily Breeze.  By now most everyone has probably read all about these games,  but in case you missed them, or didn't get the complete scoring, here are the details of the games played last night in the Quarterfinals (First Round) of the Southern Regionals in the State Championship basketball tournament.  Here's what we know:

Upper Bracket

San Diego Horizon 75, Twentynine Palms 62

We already For a long time, top-seeded Horizon was unable to shake upset-minded 29 Palms last night at Mesa College. Ryan Fellows, Detrick Watts and Wayne Bernard proved the difference, however, as the Panthers outscored the visitors 16-7 over the final four minutes to advance to the Division IV Southern California Regional semifinals with a 75-62 victory. The final score was the largest lead of the game. The contest was a good warmup for Horizon for tomorrow's game at Mesa against Santa Monica Crossroads, an 81-71 winner over Chowchilla.  Although 29 Palms (22-6) of the Southern Section came in seeded eighth, the Wildcats were able to get the ball inside to 6-foot-8 Vili Morton (16 points) and count on big baskets from 6-4 Maurice Buchanan (17 points). Balanced Horizon answered each challenge. When 29 Palms closed to 59-57 with 4:16 to play, Horizon found an unexpected hero in Bernard, whose mere presence gave the Panthers the emotional lift they needed. Early in the second quarter, the hot-shooting Bernard went in for a rebound and was hammered. He lost a tooth and was tended to on the bench until he assured the coaches he was ready to return. Welcome words to the Panthers, who struggled to find their shooting touch in a gym where they were playing for the first time. Bernard promptly fed Fellows for a three-point field goal, then scored two baskets in addition to hitting three of four free throws, scoring seven of his 11 points down the stretch. Fellows, with a game-high 25 points, and Watts, with 20, were steady throughout.   Watts especially provided that, collecting six steals and dishing off five assists
in what has become a routine game for him.

Santa Monica Crossroads 81, Chowchilla 71

Crossroads of Santa Monica rallied to beat Chowchilla 81-71. Crossroads outscored the Redskins 21-13 in the second quarter for a nine-point halftime lead, and Chowchilla outscored Crossroads 25-13 in the third quarter for a 52-49 lead. Felipe Williams scored 12 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter for Crossroads. Ernest White led the Redskins with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Misha Taylor added 19 for the Roadrunners (20-9) at Chowchilla.

Lower Bracket

Gardena Serra 59, La Jolla The Bishop's 55

Serra High found out that the state boys basketball playoffs are going to be much more difficult than the CIF Division IV-AA playoffs. The Cavaliers, a .500 team during the regular season, had made an improbable run to capture the CIF championship last week. But in the first round of the state playoffs Tuesday night, Serra had to battle back from a 13-point first-half deficit to pull out a 59-55 victory over The Bishop's School (18-14) at Serra. The Cavaliers (20-12) advance to Thursday's state quarterfinals against Tuesday's Verbum Dei-Corcoran winner. “ was definitely a wake-up call for us,” said Serra's Earl Lewis, who scored a team-high 17 points. Serra had taken an early 8-2 lead in the first quarter and held a 14-13 advantage with 1:19 left in the first quarter. But The Bishop's held the Cavaliers without a field goal for almost seven minutes and went on a 14-0 run for a 27-14 lead. Serra, however, cut the deficit to four on a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer by Doyle Cole, who finished with 12 points. Serra closed the gap to two points at the end of the third quarter and tied the game at 37 on a Cole jumper on its first possession of the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers took a 47-42 lead with 4:55 left on a breakaway dunk by Cole. Serra eventually built a 10-point lead in the final seconds before The Bishop's hit a few baskets at the end to make the score closer than it appeared. Aerick Sanders finished with 14 points for Serra, and Palmer Brown added eight. The Bishop's was led by Mike Hausmann, who finished with a game-high 28 points.Serra (20-12) overcame an eight-point halftime deficit behind 19 points from Earl Lewis and 14 points from Eric Sanders at Serra. Bishop's committed seven turnovers and gave up six offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter Mike Hausmann led Bishop's (18-14) with 28 points, 13 rebounds and three steals. Nick Booker added 12 points. Earl Lewis led the Southern Section champion Cavaliers with 19 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter.

L AVerbum Dei 87, Corcoran 42

Hard to believe that it's so difficult for the defending State Champions to get any press coverage.  But they seem to be in that "no media" land which is called South Central Los Angeles.  The only thing we could find was this little-bitty line in the LA Times (Metro Edition): "Dalron Johnson led the defending state champion Eagles (26-7) with 24 points and Marlon Parmer added 22 at Verbum Dei."  That's it.  No box, no other details, and likewise, there was nothing in the Fresno or Bakersfield papers this morning either.
