CIF State Tourney: SoCal Division III
Regional Quarterfinal Details--(March 10, 1999)

Some big games in this division, and lots of coverage for all of them from several papers (Fresno Bee, LA Times, LA Daily News, San Diego Union-Tribune, Daily Breeze,  Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, etc).  By now most everyone has probably read all about these games,  but in case you missed them, or didn't get the complete scoring, here are the details of the games played last night in the Quarterfinals (First Round) of the Southern Regionals in the State Championship basketball tournament.  Here's what we know:

Upper Bracket

Fresno Washington Union 83, Corona del Mar 53

DeShawn Stevenson scored 28 points to lead Fresno Washington Union to an 83-53 victory over Corona del Mar in the first round of the Southern California Division III boys' basketball playoffs Tuesday at Washington Union High School. Stevenson had 20 points in the first quarter to help Washington Union (23-6), the four-time defending Division III champion, take a 26-15 lead en route to its 18th straight victory. Stevenson had five three-pointers in the game. Kevin Hansen scored 14 points and Dennis Alshuler had 10 to lead Corona del Mar, which could only muster six points in the second quarter and trailed, 46-21, at the half. The Sea Kings finished the season 18-12. Corona del Mar, the CIF Southern Section Division III-A runner-up, ends the season at 19-11. Junior guard Kevin Hansen also grabbed five rebounds to lead the Sea Kings. Shamell Stallworth scored 17 points to lead Washington Union. Washington Union outscored Corona del Mar, 22-16, in the third.

West Hills Chaminade 53, San Diego St. Augustine 46

Jamal Williams had 20 points for the Saints (20-9) even though he played most of the game in foul trouble. Chaminade's Cayce Cook dominated in the second half, pulling Chaminade (25-4) back from a 10-point deficit with timely scoring, floor leadership and defense. Cook finished with 12 points, but nine came in the second half. He also held Saints guard Andre Porter to just nine points. Cook's scoring was especially critical considering how St. Augustine took Chaminade forward Scott Borchart out of the game with aggressive double and triple teams. Borchart had nine points and five rebounds. The Eagles also got solid contributions from Darren Tarlow (7 points), Chris Canoles (8) and Clarence Mitchell, whose lay-up in traffic put Chaminade ahead 48-43 with 1:21 left. The Saints set the tone early, using their speed and athletic ability to build a 15-6 lead at the end of the first period. They impressed even more defensively, shutting off the passing lanes to Borchart, then controlling the boards on Chaminade misses. Borchart took just four shots in the first half, missing three. In the second half though the Eagles shot better and were more aggressive on the boards. They also used their depth to wear the Saints down. This is the kind of stuff they make movies about.

Lower Bracket

USDHS 49, Bishop Montgomery 46

The Knights, coming off a loss in the CIF Southern Section Division III-AA championship game, had their season come to an end when they lost their first-round game at San Diego. Bishop Montgomery finished the season at 24-6. University improved to 18-9. USDHS, playing without injured guard Mike Malloy, found itself trailing Torrance's Bishop Montgomery by seven points early in the fourth quarter of their CIF Southern California Regional Division III basketball quarterfinal playoff game last night at Francis Parker. Enter Malloy and exit Bishop Montgomery. Hobbled by a bad ankle, Malloy came off the bench to score seven points and give the Dons a big emotional lift en route to a 49-46 victory. The game was close throughout. It was obvious, though, USDHS (20-8) wouldn't win without inserting the sharp-shooting Malloy. Kam Walton led the Dons with 12 points, followed by Chris Walton with 10. Garrett Lee and Gabriel Hughes each had 11 points for Bishop Montgomery (24-6).

San Dimas 66, Fresno Exeter 43

San Dimas outscored Exeter 42-24 in the second half en route to a 66-43 victory. The loss knocked Exeter out of its first regional since 1993. The Monarchs were held (24-8) to a season-low in points and shooting (38%). The Saints won Tuesday, beating CIF Central Section runner-up Exeter, 66-43, in a CIF State Southern California Regional first-round contest played before a capacity crowd at San Dimas High. San Dimas (28-3) advances to Thursday's Southern California Regional semifinal, where the Saints will host San Diego University (19-8). University defeated Torrance Bishop Montgomery, 49-46, Tuesday. Exeter's season ended 24-7. "Our lack of execution on offense ... that's what really killed us," Exeter coach Jim Mitchell said. "We were ready for their speed. We knew (the Saints) were having a special season, winning their first CIF title ever for their coach. And we knew they had their home crowd behind them. "We had to execute on offense and take away some of their steam, but we didn't." The Monarchs instead shot 16-of-38 (42 percent) from the field and held just one brief lead: 14-13 in the second quarter. San Dimas regrouped along with its senior guard D.J. Hackett, who scored 29 points in Saturday's 62-55 championship victory over Bishop Montgomery at the Anaheim Pond. Hackett was held scoreless in the first quarter Tuesday, contributing just one rebound with two fouls. So Hackett began running and scored 12 second-quarter points to put San Dimas ahead 24-19 at halftime. Hackett finished with a team-high 18 points. Saint center Josh Smith added 11 points and nine rebounds and guard Jason Greenlee scored 11 points. A 9-0 run at the start of the half gave the Saints a 33-19 advantage and Exeter, led by 6-foot-8 center Dustin Schultz's 19 points, could only get as close as nine points afterward. Hackett's blocked shot and ensuing layup and David Malana's 3-pointer keyed a 12-2 Saints' run to the finish. The Saints, powered by an unrelenting defense, were led on offense by forward D.J. Hackett who scored 18 points, including 12 in the second quarter. Jason Greenlee and Josh Smith had 11 each for San Dimas which improved to 28-3 for the season. The Saints shot 46 percent from the floor and made 11 of 16 free throws. Exeter was 16 of 33 from the floor, but made only three of of 12 3-point attempts. The Monarchs (24-8) were 8 of 14 from the line. Dustin Schultz of Exeter led all scorers with 19 points. Eddie Rubio had 13 for the Monarchs. For tiny Exeter, 1999 will not be the year of Hoosier-esque hoop dreams. The small farming community of 8,500 in southern Tulare County will have to wait until next year. San Dimas must now prepare to host San Diego's University High on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. University beat Bishop Montgomery 49-46 Tuesday night. Despite their overwhelming victory, the Saints held a precarious 24-19 lead at the half. The Saints came out strong in the first quarter, taking a 10-4 lead with 3:00 to play in the period. But Exeter's Eric Davenport hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the lead to 10-7. With 4:40 left in the half, the Monarchs pulled ahead 14-13, but San Dimas responded with seven consecutive points.
