CIF State Tourney: SoCal Division II
Regional Quarterfinal Details--(March 10, 1999)
Some big games in this division, but not a lot of media coverage for a couple of them, and it seems like nobody really expected Gahr to continue its improbable run through the playoffs, and no one had the results except a line score and a small box in the Press-Telegram. Well, by now most everyone has seen the morning papers, and so you probably already have the details, but in case you missed them, or didn't get the complete scoring, here are the details of the games played last night in the Quarterfinals (First Round) of the Southern Regionals in the State Championship basketball tournament. Here's what we know:
Upper Bracket
Compton Dominguez 100, East Bakersfield 59
Dominguez (29-3), ranked No. 9 in the country in the latest USA Today poll, rolled to a 100-59 victory over East in a Division II boys state playoff game. Dominguez jumped out to 25-10 first-quarter lead and 50-23 halftime lead and never looked back. Tyson Chandler, Dominguez's 7-0 sophomore center, had 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting with four rebounds and five blocked shots. Keith Kincade added 18 points and Cedric Tompkins added 11 points and eight rebounds. Steve Carter had 15 points and 12 rebounds for East (21-6). Robert Johnson also had 15 points for the Blades. "It's just really tough," said Carter. "They're 6-5 and 6-6 down low, not to mention the 7-footer." Against Chandler, Carter said: "You have to put on a real athletic move, and that's just to get a shot off." Fourteen of the Dons scored last night. They played so well that Joe Stevens of the Long Beach Press-Telegram was moved to ask coach Russell Otis whether the Dons would move up to Division I next year, and he replied "I think we will. Let us get through the state first and then think about that. There's more than enough competition here, and we just want to go against good competition. Next there'll be questions about playing some junior college teams." Hey, no doubt about it, the Dons could probably beat at least two-thirds of all JUCO teams out there right now. We'd bet on that. How dominating where the Dons last night? They scored 4 times before East Bakersfield even touched the ball. Of course, Bakersfield was missing one of its best players, Marquese Jingles who was suspended in the section title game after getting two technicals.
Inglewood 73, Orange Glen 67
Inglewood High's boys basketball team overcame Orange Glen's hot shooting (56 percent) and got 17 points from Sandy Fletcher Tuesday night during its 73-67 win over Orange Glen in the opening round of the Division II state playoffs in Escondido. Skip Esene added 15 points for the Sentinels (30-4), who outscored Orange Glen, 22-15, in the final quarter. Orange Glen finished the season 25-6.Orange Glen made a valiant effort but fell ending the host Patriots' 18-game winning streak. The Patriots trailed 63-56 with 3:38 to go when Joel Anderson sank a three-pointer and John Masnica hit two free throws to put Orange Glen (25-6) in position to tie. But two missed free throws and later two tries from the field misfired, allowing the Sentinels (30-4) to take a 67-61 edge with 57 seconds left. Isaiah Orange led the Patriots with 23 points, and Anderson added 19.
Lower Bracket
Lakewood Mayfair 66, San Diego Serra 49
Josh Childress scored 25 points to lead the Monsoons (27-6) at Mayfair. James Profit scored 27 points for Serra. The game featured a slow started followed by a really fast finish. Childress dominated in the game, shooting 8-13 from the frield and 8-9 from the line along with nine rebounds and three blocked shots to lead Mayfair. Childress also played great defense, taking over on Serra star James Profit in the third quarter. Profiet scored 16 points in the first half and Serra, which ends the year at 19-9, trialed by only 7 at the half, 35-28. But Childress held Profit to only four points in the third quarter, and Mayfair took a 55-36 lead going in the fourth quarter. Jesus Miranda also helped Mayfair take control by scoring 8 of his 10 points in the decisive third quarter. Chris Pittman also scored in double figures with 11 points. Andre Walters had 9 points and 10 rebounds, and James Washington scored 6 points and nine rebounds, and Bonds had 5 points. Overall, Mayfair outrebounded Serra 39-23. Lakewood will now meet Fresno Edison tomorrow night in the Southern Region semifinals. Other scorers for Serra were Kim Valenzuela 4, O.J. Payne with 3, Julius Profit 4, Todd Gohsler 6, John Idano 3, and Jarvis Wilson 2. The scoring by quarters was :
SD Serra | 11 | 17 | 8 | 13 | 49 |
Mayfair | 16 | 19 | 20 | 11 | 66 |
Fresno Edison71, Gahr 60
Unbelievably, there were absolutely no reports of this game in any of the local papers, and that includes the Fresno papers' online versions (since we're in LA, it was pretty tough to find a hard-copy of the Fresno Bee or some other paper in the Central Valley that would have covered this one. But we did manage to find the box score in the Long Beach Press-Telegram, and here it is:
Gahr | 12 | 13 | 14 | 21 | 60 |
Fresno Edison | 22 | 18 | 18 | 13 | 71 |
Scorers for Fresno Edison were: Willie Johnson 22, Chris Lopez 14, Vincent Beltran 2, Richard Manning 12, Joe Walton 2, Tim McKinney 6, Donald Hollingsworth 10, and Calvin Earvin 3. Scorers for Gahr were Marques Jordan 7, Anthony Davis 7, Hamid Yarzarlou 2, Michael Williams 11, Darrell Handy 5, Ramalice Reed 4, James Perkins 13, and Tajuan Jackson 11. All things considered, it was a great run by Gahr, but having seen Edison earlier in the season at the Reebok Holiday Prep Classic in Vegas in late December, it would have taken a superhuman effort from Gahr, an at-large team in the Southern Section, to have beaten them. Hopefully tomorrow's papers (like the P-T) will have a late report of this game, so we can make some more sense out of what happened. Edison will now play Mayfair on Thursday night in the semifinals.
