Cathedral City High School Varsity
And JV Tournaments This June & July--(March 24, 1999)

Ok, it's time to start updating our tournament pages. . .we've neglected it for the last several months of the high school season, but that's all about to change.  And in preparation for the updates, we came across some information we've been sitting on for the last few weeks.  Yes, it's way too early to actually think about attending tournaments in June and July, but not so if you are a high school coach looking for a place to take your team this summer. If you have a high school team that wants to play competitive games agaisnt other teams you only dream about seeing during the regular season, or you're looking for excellent competition at all levels of boys' high school hoops then Cathedral City has a few tournaments you might be interested in checking out.

Oh yeah, you've also got to be interested in what might seem like insanely hot weather.  Last year when we attended one of Cathedral City's tournaments (which was running concurrently with the annual Palm Springs High tournament), it was about 110 degrees in the shade.  But Cathedral City has a new gym, with a great air-conditioning system, so you won't wilt as long as you stay inside.

The competition is for Varsity and JV teams in round robin play in which each team gets to play five or seven games each weekend; coaches get to pick what kind of pools they want to play in.  Seven game pools play 2 games Friday, 3 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday;  five game pools play 3 Saturday and 2 on either Friday or Sunday.   The tournament will run for three weekends, and high school teams can enter one or more as they like, June 11-13, July 9-11, and July 30-August 1.

Games start on Friday morning and the last game Sunday starts in the early evening.  If you are a high school coach interested in getting some great summer experience for your teams, call Cathedral City High coach Rob Hamner at (760) 322-8750 to make arrangements to play.  The fees are pretty reasonable:   Entry fees are just $35.00 per team, which means that if a school brings a varsity and jv team and decides to play 10 games, it's just $350.00; for two teams playing 14 games, it's $490.00.  Cheap at twice the price.

And in between these weekend games, is the Desert-City Summer Basketball Classic, which is hosted by Cathedral City HS and Palm Desert HS, which this year will take place June 18, 19, & 20 (Friday through Sunday).  The tournament will be by invitation only, but interested schools can apply for an entry.  The tournament will feature 48 of the top high school teams from SoCal and even some from Nevada and Arizona, and will include a five game guarantee with some teams playing six games.  Entry is $180.00 for all teams entered prior to May 1, and thereafter the price is $200.00.  The tournament will be played at four different locations:  Cathedral City HS, Palm Desert HS, Desert Christian HS, and College of the Desert.  Again, if you want more information, call Palm Desert Coach Don Brady at (760) 345-7188 or Rob Hamner at (760) 322-8750.

We really have no idea what the level of competition will be at the June 11-13, and the July events will be, but we'd anticipate that it will feature teams from just about every division of CIF, from D-V to D-I teams, so don't be too intimidated to enter if you have a team from a smaller school.  On the other hand, we'd say the competition level at the Desert City Summer tournament will be pretty high-caliber stuff.  Last year featured Artesia, Ayala, Servite, Newbury Park, San Dimas, Canyon Country Canyon, Poway, and a bunch of others.  Last year was great, and this year should be just as good if not better.
