Palm Springs Basketball Coach
Daryl Barton Resigns--(March 3, 1999)
According to a published report in the Riverside Press-Enterprise, Palm Springs boys' basketball coach Daryl Barton resigned last week after 12 seasons leading the Aztecs. Barton said he was asked to resign with no reason given. He said he will continue to teach and coach boys' tennis at Palm Springs.
During his stint with the Aztecs, Palm Springs went to the playoffs 11 times. He was named Ivy League coach of the year in 1986-87 and Desert Valley League coach of the year in 1995-96 and 1996-97. The Aztecs' best season under Barton was 1995-96, when they went 10-0 in the Desert Valley League, 22-6 overall, and made it to the semifinals of the CIF Division II-AA playoffs, where they lost to Riverside North, 61-44. Palm Springs finished second in the Desert Valley League this season at 7-3 and lost in the first round of the playoffs to Villa Park, 49-43, for a 13-14 overall record.
