Washington Union: The Full Story--(March 9, 1999)
Here's the report from our friend Marty Hartwig from Fresno:
Washington rips Corona del Mar
It wasn't always pretty, but Union dominated, beating Corona 83-53. In the beginning, it
looked like a close game in the making. DeShawn Stevenson controlled the opening tip and
scored inside to give Union a 2-0 lead. Kevin Hansen of Corona answered with a three
pointer giving the Sea Kings a 3-2 lead. Stevenson answered with a three of his own, 5-3
Union. The Union defense again left Hansen open near the top of the key and he buried
another three, Corona 6, Union 5. Stevenson hit another three for Union on the next
posession, then added a two, giving Stevenson Union's first ten points. Shamell Stallworth
hit a three and Union was up 13-6 with 4:52 left in the first quarter. A few baskets were
traded, then with about 2:00 remaining in the first, Union coach Vonn Webb substituted
Archie Copeland and Maurice Moore for Stevenson and DeShawn Anderson. Some frenetic
defense keyed by Copeland and Moore sent Union on a run, leading 26-15 at the end of the
first quarter despite a three at the buzzer by Corona's Alec Hanson.
In the second quarter, Union pulled away steadily. Their lead grew to 46-21 at halftime on
an incredible three by Stallworth from the right baseline while falling out of bounds with
0.5 seconds left. A truly incredible shot, worthy of a highlight film. At this point, the
game seemed pretty much over.
At the start of the third quarter, Corona went on a run, pulling to within 48-34 with 5:34
left on some easy layups and a three point play by Kevin Hansen. Union came to life and
started playing defense again. Union put on a run keyed by a Carvell Wafer slam on a
no-look pass from Moore after a Moore steal. Moore followed with another feed to Wafer,
resulting in a three point play after a foul. Wafer then hit Stevenson for an alley-oop
slam and Stallworth hit a three at the buzzer to give Union a 67-37 lead.
The fourth quarter was fairly uneventful and somewhat sloppy. With 6:35 to go in the game,
a Stevenson slam gave Union a 71-37 lead and the game was over. With 5:00 remaining Webb
started emptying his bench. With about 3:00 to go no starters remained in the game.
DeShawn Stevenson led all scorers with 29 points. Also scoring in double figures for Union were Carvell Wafer with 19 and Shamell Stallworth with 17. Coupe Taylor had a low-scoring game but played typical tough defense and had some great assists. Scoring for Corona was led by Kevin Hansen with 14. Also in double figures for the Sea Kings were Dennis Alshuler and Alex Bottom with 10 each.
Full scoring was as follows:
Washington Union: Stevenson 29, Wafer 19,
Stallworth 17, Taylor 6, Brice 3, Sconiers 3, Anderson 2, Copeland 2, Moore 2.
Corona del Mar: Hansen 14, D. Alshuler 10, Bottom 10, Hanson 7, Patterson 5, Shea 4, Hunt
2, C. Alshuler 1.
Thanks Marty. On to the Semifinals against Chaminade.
