CIF SS Playoffs: All The Wild Card
Game Results From Wednesday--(Feb. 18, 1999)

There were more than a few wild card games played last night in Division I-AA, I-A, IV-AA, and V-AA, and while we think clearly there should have been more games played to permit more at-large teams, that's not what happened this year; maybe next year, when the CIF Southern Section comes to its senses, and with a new commissioner (Dean Crowley has announced his retirement) maybe a consistent playoff approach can be proposed to all the school principals and AD's that will work.  In the meantime, there were only 12 wild card games in the entire playoffs in every division.  Here are the results from last night.

Division I-AA

In Division I-AA there was just one wild card game, Palmdale v. Leuzinger played at Palmdale. Here's what happended:

Palmdale 82, Leuzinger 72--Eric Brown scored 14 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter to spark the host Falcons (12-13) to a come-from-behind Division I-AA wild-card victory.   John Thompson had 19 points and seven assists for Palmdale, which trailed, 62-57, with fewer than seven minutes remaining. Ron Periodin scored 24 points for Leuzinger (14-12).  Palmdale will play at top-seeded Artesia in the first round Friday.

Division I-A

Likewise, in Division I-A, there was just one game, Loyola at Royal:

Loyola 56, Royal 55-- We didn't get any of the details, and none of the local papers have a box or anything other than a linescore, but we know that Loyola beat Royal, 56-55, and with a score like that, it must have been a close game most of the way.  Loyola now gets the privilege of playing Mater Dei at Mater Dei on Friday night.  Whoopeee.

Division IV-AA

Three wild card games in this division were played last night.  Here's what happened:

Wild Card "A"

Oak Park 52, Salesian 34--Zach Smith had 24 points and 12 rebounds for host Oak Park (12-13) in a Division IV-AA wild-card game. Eric Carver added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles.  Oak Park will move on to play Laguna Beach on Friday in First Round action at Laguna Beach.

Wild Card "B"

St. Paul 76, Bishop Union 57--The Swordsmen (15-12) forced 12 turnovers in the second half and they went on a 13-0 run midway through the third quarter to break the game open as St. Paul advances to the first round with a win over the Broncos (10-14) at St. Paul High. Senior center Chris Landrum led St. Paul with 20 points, including 13 in the second half. Senior guard Jesse Martinez also had 19 points while Mike Holloway and Carlos Cornejo chipped in with 14 and 10 respectively. The Swordsmen will now travel to play Beaumont (18-8) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the first round.

Wild Card "C"

Daniel Murphy 61, Valley Christian 56 --Erick Streelman and Brian Kuyper each scored 20 points but it wasn't enough, as the Crusaders' (17-9) season ended with a loss to the Nobles (14-13) in a wild card game at Daniel Murphy High. Daniel Murphy had a three point lead entering the fourth quarter and they held on behind some clutch free throws down the stretch. Brandon Dawson led Daniel Murphy with 21 points. Valley Christian's Ryan Jett had 16 rebounds and Brent Boekestein added seven points and seven assists in the loss.  Murphy will now play Carpinteria (Tri-Valley #1) on Friday at Carpinteria.

Division V-AA

There were 7 wild card games in this division.  Here are the results and the next round opponents:

Wild Card "A"

Cate (Condor #4) 47, Masada (Freedom #3) 42 -- Wow, this just goes to show you we don't know anything about anything.  When a 6-14 overall team gets the win on the road over a team which finished higher in it's league, well. . . either this was a really good game, or these are teams that even if they advance will just get slaughtered in the first round.  Cate, with the win, advances to play Pasadena Poly, and shades of last year, when Cate drew Montclair Prep (last year's No. 1 seed) in the first round, unless Cate has gotten decidedly better, they can expect a rough time against Poly, which is 21-0.  We've been unable to pick up any details of this game (scoring, assists, and the like) but at least Cate has extended it's season by one more game.

Wild Card "B"

Campbell Hall (Delphic #3) 83, St. Margarets (Academy #3) 48--Jesse Foster, a 6-foot-7 junior center from host Campbell Hall, scored 22 points, grabbed 19 rebounds and blocked four shots.  Campbell Hall (18-9), the third-place finisher in the Delphic League, will travel to Whitewater in a first-round game on Friday.  "They didn't have any big people, so I went inside," said Foster, who had a four-inch height advantage over the tallest St. Margaret's player.   Campbell Hall was leading only, 30-23, at halftime, but outscored the Tartans, 30-13, in the third quarter. The key was getting more players involved in the offense besides Foster.  Greg Drobnick scored 11 of his 15 points in the quarter. Hassan Bassiri finished with 19 points and Josh Levy added 15 points and 12 rebounds for Campbell Hall.   Brian Sternberg scored 19 points and Alex Huff, averaging 23.5 points, had 18 points for St. Margaret's (12-10).

Wild Card "C"

Desert (High Desert #3) 76, Woodcrest Christian (Christian #3)  55-- Size was the key factor in Woodcrest Christian's 76-55 CIF Division 5AA wild-card loss to Edwards AFB Desert on Wednesday. Sidney Melvin and Jeff Langford, who both stand over 6-foot-4, scored 24 and 20 points, respectively, for Desert (17-6). Combined, they made 20 shots in the paint. The Royals cut the lead to 47-41 late in the third quarter, but Desert answered with a 10-0 run.  Junior guard Kris Powers led the Royals with 20 points and seven steals. Gary Gallegos added 12 points. DESERT (76) -- Belmonte 10, Williams 11, Silva 4, Melvin 24, Langford 20, Hart 4, Doh 3. WOODCREST CHRISTIAN (55) -- Jones 12, Boyd 3, Powers 20, Gallegos 12, Schmalhofer 7, Burdett 1. Halftime score -- Desert 35-27. Three-point goals -- Williams, Melvin, Doh, Jones 2, Boyd. Total fouls -- Desert 16, Woodcrest Christian 9. Fouled out -- none.  Desert now travels to Whitewater on Friday night for the first round play.

Wild Card "D"

AGBU (Valley #3) 59, Villanova Prep (Condor #3) 52-- No stats, no box, just a score.  ABGU meets Yeshiva on Saturday (not Friday) at Santa Monica High at 7:30 p.m.

Wild Card "E"

Windward (Liberty #3) 69, Boron (Desert Mountain #3) 54-- Again, no stats, no box, just a score.  Windward gets to match up on Friday night against CSDR in Riverside on Friday night.

Wild Card "F"

Sherman Indian (Arrowhead #3) 71, Desert Christian Lancaster (Desert Mountain #4) 69--Slater Nez hit a three-pointer with four seconds remaining in overtime to pull Riverside Sherman Indian from behind in a Division 5AA wild-card victory over Lancaster Desert Christian. Isaac Keo had helped the Braves (8-11) force overtime by sinking a basket as regulation expired to tie the game at 59. Keo finished with 10 rebounds, and Nez had four assists. Sophomore Phil Parker led Desert Christian with 31 points. The Braves, who switched to a man-to-man defense in the third quarter and overcame a 16-point deficit, will play Friday at No. 4-seed Downey Calvary Chapel. DESERT CHRISTIAN (69) -- Smith 6, Spears 2, Fluty 11, Parker 31, Waugh 19. SHERMAN INDIAN (71) -- Keo 30, Nez 20, Polk 7, Wahwasuck 4, Polequaptewa 0, Shirley 10. Halftime score -- 25-25. End of regulation -- 59-59. Three-point goals -- Fluty, Waugh 3, Shirley 2, Keo 4, Nez 5, Polk. Total fouls -- Sherman Indian 9, Desert Christian 7. Fouled out -- none.. Sherman Indian advances to meet Calvary Chapel Downey, the No. 3 seed in the Division on Friday night at Calvary Chapel.

Wild Card "G"

Holy Martyrs (Liberty #4) 51, Flintridge Prep (Prep #3)   40--Schant Choulakian had 21 points and visiting Holy Martyrs (17-7) rallied from a one-point halftime deficit in a Division V-AA wild-card game.  Holy Martyrs gets the nod now to play Santa Clara, the No. 2 seed and D-I signees B.J. Ward and Nick Jones on Friday at Santa Clara.  Good luck to Holy Martyrs, because they'll need more than that. We're predicting Santa Clara by at least 20.
