Playing Catchup: Game Results From
Last Wednesday & Thursday--(Feb. 8, 1999)
We got so caught up in all the hype, hysteria and just plain writing about the Nike Extravaganza IV, not to mention watching way too much basketball last week, that we just didn't have time this past weekend to catch up on all of the games from the next to last week of regular season play in Southern Section and City Section. We did manage to get a breather and have compiled the scores and stats (where available) from the Wednesday and Thursday games from February 3 and 4, 1999. We already posted Monday and Tuesday this past Saturday, and we'll have Friday's game results in a moment.
Game Results From Wednesday, February 3,1999

Forward Skip Esene notched 13 points and center Noel Felix added nine for the Sentinels, who dominated the fourth quarter by outscoring Morningside, 30-8. Gerrod Jenkins grabbed 12 rebounds for Inglewood.
North Torrance 72, South Torrance 62--Senior guard Jermel Brooks had 18 points, seven assists and three steals to lead the Saxons (9-13, 2-8) to the home win. Senior center Tyler Owens contributed seven rebounds, eight points and two blocked shots.
Camino Real League
Verbum Dei 78, St. Anthony 53--Unfortunately for the Saints, Parmer did show up for Wednesday night's Camino Real League showdown, and the senior managed to put on another stellar performance that by now must seem commonplace for Eagles' fans. Parmer carved up the Saints' defense to the tune of a game-high 32 points and 12 assists as Verbum Dei ran away with a 78-53 triumph at St. Anthony. The Saints (17-6, 4-2), and in particular, junior forward Pearson Smith, got off to a great start. Smith scored seven points in the first four minutes of play as the team opened an early 10-6 lead. But Parmer, who scored 11 points in the period, sparked a 10-4 run to give the Eagles (16-7, 5-0) a 16-14 lead at the end of the quarter. Larry Davenport came off the bench to score seven of his 13 points in the second quarter as Verbum Dei surged to a 39-27 halftime advantage. Junior forward Arlando Holder completed a three-point play with 2:39 left in the third period to cut the St. Anthony's deficit, which had swelled to as much as 16 points, to 54-41. However, Parmer responded with seven consecutive points to close the quarter as the Eagles extended its lead to, 61-41, heading into the final eight minutes. The Saints would get no closer than 17 points the rest of the way. Parmer, who also nabbed five steals, drew the praise of Eagles coach David Greenwood, who despite the 25-point victory, was upset with the overall performance of his squad. Smith finished with a team-high 21 points for St. Anthony. Forward Jared Lloyd added 10 points and played tough defense inside, but missed all nine of his 3-point attempts.
St. Monica 66, Cantwell Sacred Heart 57

Pueblos on Friday, improved to 4-2 in league and 14-9 overall. Santa Barbara dropped to

(27-26). But Ventura hit three of its seven 3-pointers in the third quarter to take a lead
it would never relinquish. Tony Freeman led the Dons with 16 points but was the only

Dos Pueblos 64, Buena 48-- The Chargers overcame some personnel problems to
stop a two-game losing streak and win a Channel League road game. Dos Pueblos, 4-2 in
league and 18-6 overall, held three players out of the game as a voluntary school
disciplinary action stemming from a fight during last week's game against Ventura. In
addition, star guard ShanTay Legans sat out most of the first quarter for his involvement
in the fight. The Chargers nonetheless led 17-16 after one quarter and took control with a
21-10 second quarter. Forward Alex Jenkins continued to play well, with 23 points, six
blocked shots and eight rebounds. Johnny Ortiz added 14 points while Legans finished 11

Terrance Lawson grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with his six points for Westchester
City Section--Northern Conference
Belmont 92, Eatle Rock 77
Franklin 70, Wilson 58
Hollywood 81, Lincoln 69
City Section-- Northwest Valley Conference
Kennedy 51, Taft 47--Nana Gbewonyo had 23 points and 12 rebounds, and the Golden Cougars halted a two-game losing streak in a West Valley League game at Kennedy (13-7, 5-2).
Granada Hills 68, Birmingham 63--Alonzo Parks scored eight of his 18 points in the second overtime and the Highlanders (3-17, 1-6) won a North Valley League game at Granada Hills. Darol Taylor scored 32 points for Birmingham (3-18, 0-7).
Cleveland 68, Chatsworth 63 --Bobby Bowlin drew what
he called the toughest defensive assignment of his career in Cleveland High forward Kent
Dennis during Wednesday's key Northwest Valley Conference boys' basketball game. The
Chatsworth High guard did an admirable job against Dennis, the No. 2 scorer in the City
Section, but Cleveland still cleared a path toward a conference championship, rallying for
a 68-63 victory. Dennis, who averages 21.3 points per game, scored 22. He also had seven
rebounds, seven assists, four steals and a block for Cleveland (17-4, 7-0). The victory
extends the Cavaliers' lead in the standings to two games with three left in the regular
season. The Cavaliers must lose their last three games and Chatsworth must win its
final three -- including the Feb. 12 finale at Cleveland -- for the Chancellors to share
the conference title. Chatsworth's players may have felt unbeatable in the first half
against Cleveland. The Chancellors led by as many as 11 points. But a quick seven points
-- four on whirling drives out of isolation sets from the top of the arc and three on a
catch-and-shoot 3-pointer -- by Dennis with 1:53 remaining in the half pulled the
Cavaliers to within seven at halftime. After Cleveland point guard Kenny Mason (eight
points, six assists) buried a 3-pointer to open the third quarter, pulling the Cavs to
within 36-32. Mason's shot was a welcome one, considering that he sat on the bench in foul
trouble throughout most of the first half. Chatsworth's offense disappeared, scoring just
nine points in the game's final 5:39. Six of the points came at the free-throw line, and
three came on a Mark Cannon 3-pointer with :29 to make it 64-63 Cleveland. Cannon had 15
points and Marlik Morris 18 to lead Chatsworth. Single free throws by Brian Smith (17
points, 10 rebounds) and Larry Knox made it 66-63 with :06 left, but Eric Bush corralled
the loose rebound of Knox's missed second foul shot
and drew a foul himself. Bush missed the first of his one-and-one opportunity,
keeping the Chancellors slim hopes alive with :03 left. But Smith rebounded the errant
free throw and scored with :01 left for the 68-63 win.

year to do that. The Pirates beat St. Joseph 74-58 in a Los Padres League game

Jordan 75, Compton 55--Three weeks ago, Jordan High was manhandled by Compton, losing by 26 points. But payback wasn't the motivation behind the Panthers' 74-55 drubbing of visiting Compton on Wednesday night. Staying alive in the Moore League race was. Jordan (18-6) raised its league record to 5-2 to pull into a second-place tie with the Tarbabes (13-7). They both trail league-leading Poly by one game, with the Jackrabbits traveling to Compton on Friday night. The Panthers showed the intensity of a team on the brink. A loss would have put them in third place, no matter the Compton-Poly outcome. Now, a Tarbabes' victory on Friday would create a three-team logjam at the top of the league standings. [Note--it didn't happen: Compton's Tito Maddox and three other starters and two reserve players, a total of six, were ruled academically ineligible, and Compton fell to Poly]. Senior forward Darren Peterson scored nine of his 18 points in the first quarter to keep Jordan close, trailing just 16-14. The second quarter was all Jordan and all Bryant, who scored 12 points to give the Panthers a lead they would never relinquish. Jordan, behind a 7-2 run in the final minute, was ahead, 40-32, at intermission. The Tarbabes pulled to within a basket, 46-44, on junior forward Ellis Myles' layup at the 2:35 mark of the third quarter. But Compton's comeback was shortlived, as Bryant stole the ball with two seconds to go and hit a short jumper at the buzzer to give the Panthers a 55-48 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Jordan, which held Maddox to just four points in the second half, took over the game over the final eight minutes, going on a 17-2 run to put the game out of reach and exacting a bit of revenge in the process. Jordan also got 12 points from senior guard Craig Calloway. The Tarbabes, who got 18 points from Maddox, 17 from Myles and 12 from Lanere Anderson, feel they let a golden opportunity slip past them.
Poly 64, Millikan 51-- The Jackrabbits (16-6, 6-1)
led 16-10 after one quarter and used that cushion, in addition to some key free throws, to
keep host Millikan (10-13, 2-5) at bay. Joe Travis scored 24 points to lead Poly, while
Kenny Wright added 14. Guards Andrew Sparks and C.J. Hodges played well for Millikan.
Sparks scored 19 points, while Hodges had 11 assists.
Wilson 57, Lakewood 52-- The Bruins (7-16, 3-4) used a 17-8 third quarter, behind
10 points in the period by senior guard Jamaal Anderson, to put away the Lancers (2-21,
0-7) at Lakewood High. Williams, who finished with 17 points and seven rebounds,
also got help from teammate Cory Harris, a senior guard, who led Wilson with 19 points and
eight rebounds. Lamont Mitchell led Lakewood with 16 points.

Santa Maria 64, San Luis Obispo 58-- Things got hot
in Tiger Gym on Wednesday night. Santa Maria was heating things up in the first
quarter, before San Luis Obispo got hot in the second. And in the third quarter, both
teams were hot under the collar. The Saints eventually came away with a 64-58 win in
a Northern League boys basketball game. The loss is the Tigers' fifth straight after
starting league play with three victories. They fall below .500 with a 10-11 overall
record. Santa Maria improves to 5-2 in league and 14-6 overall. The Saints moved
into a tie for first place Wednesday after Arroyo Grande upset Lompoc. San Luis
Obispo overcame a first-quarter deficit to have a slim 32-31 lead at halftime. Santa Maria
went on a 16-6 run to build a nine-point advantage with 16 seconds left in the third
quarter. That's went the temperature in the gym started rising. A pushing match
between San Luis Obispo's Justin McCollum and Santa Maria's Makani Sarellano broke out
after Sarellano landed on McCollum while driving to the basket. Both players were
ejected for the incident, and Santa Maria's Curtis Reade was also kicked out for leaving
the bench. Williamson sank the two ensuing technical fouls as the Tigers climbed
back into the game. With a jumper by Dan D'Entremont, San Luis Obispo cut the lead
to 52-50 with just under five minutes remaining. Despite poor free throw shooting by Santa
Maria down the stretch, the Tigers weren't able to convert on their late offensive
chances. Williamson finished with nine points before fouling out in the fourth
quarter. D'Entremont led the Tigers with 14 points on five baskets, while Riley King was
good on three of six three-pointers to give him 11 points on the night. Ryan
Sutcliffe posted nine for San Luis Obispo, while leading the team with nine rebounds.
Santa Maria was led by Mike Gonzales' 19 points. He was followed closely by Willie
Milner with 15 points and 15 rebounds.
Santa Maria came out like it was going to put the game away early. The Saints scored the
first 10 points of the game and were up 19-15 at the end of the first quarter. San
Luis Obispo fought back with a spark from reserve guard Brent Walker, and took a two-point
lead in at halftime. San Luis Obispo will have the fourth seed heading into the
Northern League playoffs which start this Tuesday, which is apparently a bit different
than Southern Section playoffs, which don't start until next week.
Arroyo Grande 54, Lompoc 50-- Sean Shields hit two free throws with nine seconds
left as the Eagles knocked off the first-place Braves. Arroyo Grande, 4-3 in league
and 10-12 overall, has won three straight league games. David Rivera had 15 points
for Arroyo Grande, while Schuyler Linnemann and Shields each had 10. Shields scored
seven of his points in the fourth quarter. The Eagles faced Santa Maria last Friday
night in a game which will determine which of the teams gets the No. 2 seeding for next
week's Northern League tournament.

Mater Dei 68, Capistrano Valley 53-- It was billed as the biggest high school boys' basketball game in Orange County this season, a grudge match between the county's top two teams which battled to double overtime last time they met. But in case you couldn't attend the South Coast League rematch between No. 1 Mater Dei and No. 2 Capistrano Valley Wednesday night at the Bren Center, don't fret. You didn't miss much. In fact Capistrano Valley fans didn't miss anything, not in the first quarter, anyway. The Cougars did not score in the first quarter and shot a dismal 30.8% for the game. And Mater Dei waltzed, 68-53. The Cougars (18-5, 6-2 in league play were 0 for 13 from the field in the first quarter and trailed, 21-0, going into the second. Jermaine McDaniel ended the drought with a three-point basket 39 seconds into the second. Mater Dei (22-3, 7-0) now has control of the league title race. Last year, the teams split the season series and shared the league championship. In their first meeting this season, Capistrano Valley led by 17 points at halftime, but Mater Dei came back to win. The difference Wednesday was Monarch 6-foot-10 sophomore center Jamal Sampson, who made his first start of the season after sitting out because of a broken foot and a broken hand. Sampson blocked three shots in the first four minutes, forcing the Cougars to shoot from the outside. He finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and nine blocked shots. Nathan Hair had 17 points to pace Capistrano Valley. J.J. Sola added 14 for the Cougars.

Elsinore 48, Hemet 47--Bobby Russo hit a three-point shot with 18 seconds to play
as Elsinore (7-0, 18-5) edged Hemet (3-4, 10-11) in a Sunkist League game. "It was
just a full-blown slugfest," Hemet coach Alex Boyd said. "It was a great high
school basketball game. . . . It was as if the old Hemet bulldog was in a pit with the
Elsinore tiger. And I lost, and I still think it's a great game." Boyd said the game
was played cleanly but with ferocity. Hemet's A.J. Voto, who came off the bench to score
12 points, hit a three-pointer with a minute to play to give Hemet a 47-45 lead, but just
over 40 seconds later Russo avoided Hemet's half-court man defense by jumping back behind
the arc, where he caught a pass and launched what proved to be the game winner. Hemet's
Jashon Rees had a chance to tie -- and win -- the game with three seconds to play but
missed the front end of a one-and-one. The rebound off the free throw was touched by
Hemet's Dan Christiansen but bounced out of bounds. ELSINORE (48) -- Russo 22, Maxey 6,

Stoneridge Prep 56, Santa Clarita Christian 44--Sammy Delrahim had 34 points and six steals, and the Tigers (2-10) won a nonleague victory at Santa Clarita Christian. And the next day, the LA Times also drew criticism from many local coaches for an article it ran on Sammy Delrahim, who is averaging 35.8 points for Stoneridge Prep, who did what should have been a nice article, but which made it sound like he was "shopping" and being recruited by several schools, including Harvard-Westlake, Crespi and Chaminade. "I think it's just not what 'open enrollment' transfer is all about," said one coach who requested anonymity. "When a paper runs a headline making it look like a player is being actively 'recruited' and will take his game to the highest bidder, at the high school level, something is wrong." Sources also say that even though he's reportedly scoring quite a bit at Stoneridge Prep, the stats being kept by the school may be somewhat questionable, given that the games are not also reported in the local media.
Here's what the LA Times had to say about Delrahim:
Delrahim, a 5-foot-11 sophomore guard, has been actively looking at other schools and, in effect, has been marketing himself as a student-athlete. Delrahim, who says he has a 3.8 grade-point average, went for an interview at Harvard-Westlake last week and also has Chaminade, Crespi and Campbell Hall on his list. "I want to go to a school and help get a championship," said Delrahim who, on any given night can be found watching a local high school basketball game. Delrahim said he has enjoyed Stoneridge Prep, but he realizes winning a title at the tiny private Tarzana school, which has an enrollment of 74 students and does not have a gymnasium, is a longshot. His scoring average will almost surely drop on a better team next season. "They're better [basketball] programs," he said. "I like the crowds. I like the facilities and the exposure you get there. It motivates me."
