Washington Union Finally Beats Clovis West--(Feb. 1, 1999)

We got the following report from a reader up in the Fresno area:

Washington Union High School and Clovis West boys basketball teams played their rematch on Jan.30. The winner . . . Washington Union High! The game was never in Question. The "U" lead from start to finish. At times the Union's lead was at 25. The "U" led 23-9 at the end of the 1st and by 21 at the half. The "U" led by 19 at the end of the third and if not for poor free throw shooting down the stretch, would have won by 20 or more!

My hat's off to Coach Vonn Webb, his staff and players. The players stepped up and thrashed the 8th ranked team in the state by playing team ball. Great job guys!!! Final score...WU-83 CW 73...DeShawn Stevenson 22pts. 9 assists 8 rebounds, Coupe Taylor 20pts. 9 assists 6rebounds, Shamell Stallworth 17 pts. 8 rebounds, DeShawn Anderson 13 pts. 5 steals, Archie Copeland  (who should have been the game's MVP) 6 steals 4 assists virtually shut down Ash Knowlton(the key to the Clovis West attack).  Chris Hernandez for Clovis West played an excellent 4th quarter...He and Archie are the two best sophs. in Central California...NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!

We're looking forward to seeing both of these teams in the playoffs and eventually in the Southern California Regionals of the State Tournament.
