The big news Tuesday was Casey Jacobsen breaking the Southern Section career scoring record. Really big news. So big, that we've reposted the article written by Michael King as a part of our regular feature on Scores and Results from around the Southern and City Sections, and we've also posted Gary Klein's article and another one on Glendora and Jacobsen from the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin. But there was much more action going on than just Casey breaking records. A lot of league races were coming down to the wire, and others were just plain ending. Remember, the final games of the regular season will take place on Friday night. The seeding committees will be picking the playoff brackets all day Saturday and will announce them Sunday afternoon. We'll have the brackets posted up shortly there after. In the meantime, here's what happened Tuesday afternoon and evening around the Southern & City Sections:

The Cubs (7-1, 15-11) and La Sierra Academy (6-2, 11-8) entered the game tied for first. Brandon Bivens led La Sierra Academy with 25 points. The Cubs' second-half defense was key to the game, creating many turnovers. The league championship was the Cubs' first. With the game tied 65-65 and 28 seconds remaining, Jeremias Valencia put the Cubs up for the first time and it ended up being all they needed. CSDR (71) -- Je.Valencia 31, Ja.Valencia 16, Jon. Baseline LeagueGlendora 70, Upland 64-- We've already featured the exclusive story written by Michael King of the LA Times/Our Times for SoCalHoops last Tuesday night, but since we're doing Tuesday game scores here it is again: It appears the tale of Mighty Casey was due for a re-write. Glendora High School basketball star Casey Jacobsen shot his way into the record books Tuesday night as the Tartan senior broke the California career scoring record in Glendoras (24-1, 9-0 in league) 70-64 win over arch rival Upland (21-3, 7-2). The historical shot came with 1:17 remaining in the third quarter as Jacobsen drained a 23-foot three pointer from the top of the key, giving him 3,056 points two more than Tracy Murray, who also played at Glendora. "[The preceding] timeout, one of my teammates yelled, One more and youve got it Case," said the 6-6 Jacobsen, who has already committed to play at Stanford next year. "I caught the ball up top and I didnt see any arms in face. As soon as I let it go, I knew I had it." And even though the game was on Uplands home floor, a celebration followed. Tartan fans showered the court with streamers and confetti and the officials stopped the game to award Jacobsen the game ball. While the floor was being swept of the debris, Jacobsen ran up into the stands and hugged his mother and handed her the ball. "Other than at home or in a CIF championships game, this was definitely the best place to break the record," said Jacobsen. "Every time we come here they give us a tough game and tonight was for the Baseline League title who could ask for anything more." Jacobsen finished the game with 33 points, including six three-pointers as Glendora stretched a 29-26 halftime lead into as much as a 17-point advantage, at 51-14, following a trey by Chad Clark late in the third period. Upland put together a six-point run early in the fourth quarter to shrink the lead to 53-46 and had possession, but Jacobsen came up with a steal and scored in transition. Clark followed with a three on the next position to seemingly put Upland away. Seniors Matt Santos and Desmond Penigar had different ideas for Senior Night, though, as they refused to give up. Fouling and calling timeouts until the bitter end, the Highlanders gave the Tartans all they could handle before the final buzzer sounded making for a far better game than last months 77-50 loss at Glendora. "This game was full of distractions it was a real roller coaster," Upland coach Jeff Klein said. "Im proud of my players though because they pushed all the way through and never hung their heads." Penigar kept the Highlanders in the game, scoring a team-high 22 points, mostly on deft post moves and athletic put-backs. Santos came off the bench for disciplinary reasons but was a sparkplug on offense, scoring 13 points, and did a good job limiting Jacobsen when he drew him on defense. Uplands Achilles heel in the last game was its post game as 6-11 Steven Hamilton and 6-7 DeMarcus Williams were held scoreless. This time around Williams made his presence felt from the opening tip, picking up two offensive boards and scoring Uplands first three points. Problem was Williams also picked up two quick fouls and was in foul trouble for the remainder of the game. Hamilton stepped up on defense but did not see as much floor time in the second half as the Highlanders were trying to mount a comeback. "I was really happy with what I saw from our big men," Klein said. "They could really be the difference for us in the postseason." Chad Clark finished with 14 points for the Tartans and twin brother Chris, who torched Upland for 27 last time out, added 10 more.
And here's another story on the same game from the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin:
Upland boys basketball coach Jeff Klein would've gladly given Glendora's Casey Jacobsen the CIF-Southern Section scoring record, if Klein's Highlanders could have the game and a first-place tie. But Klein would have to settle for a nice effort. Jacobsen broke the section record by scoring 22 of his game-high 33 points in the second half and Glendora held off Upland 70-64 Tuesday at Upland High School. The win also clinched the Baseline League title for Glendora. "We figured Casey would get his, but we wanted to stop everyone else," Klein said. "And I think we did a pretty good job of that." Jacobsen, who is Stanford-bound,needed 20 points to break the section career record, and by halftime it was in doubt whether he would get it. He had only 11 points, but heated up quickly in the third quarter. After a Desmond Penigar basket cut Upland's deficit to 29-28 early in the third quarter, Jacobsen started an 11-0 Tartans run with back-to-back 3-pointers and the only question was when he would break the record. Upland (21-3 overall, 7-2 league) hung tough despite the fanfare surrounding Jacobsen. On two free throws with 1:43 to play in the third quarter, Jacobsen tied the record of 3,053 points set by former Tartan star Tracy Murray. He broke it shortly thereafter on a long-range 3-pointer with 1:17 to play in the third, giving Glendora (25-1, 9-0) a 48-34 lead. "It was definitely special to get it here," Jacobsen said. "The first place I would've liked to have done it was Glendora. But the second place was Upland. Every year we're the top two teams in league. "I was more nervous (Tuesday). I'd be lying to you if I said I wasn't." Glendora's lead got as big as 51-34 in the final minute of the third quarter. Upland made several runs in the fourth quarter, but the deficit was just too large. Upland was within 53-46 with 6:24 to play, but Glendora went on an 11-3 run to take a 15-point lead with 2:17 left. The Highlanders didn't cut the lead to less than 10 points again until the final minute. "We showed a lot of heart," Upland senior Matt Santos said. "We never gave up and kept coming back. But in the third quarter, we lost track of where Casey was. "We can learn from this and carry it on into the playoffs." The Highlanders did play much better Tuesday than they did last month in a 77-50 loss at Glendora, in which Upland was out of the game in the second quarter. "We expected to play much better at home than we did the first time," Klein said. Despite foul trouble, Penigar led the way for Upland with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Santos added 13. Chad Clark scored 14 points for the Tartans. The fourth quarter was marred by a multitude of foul calls. The teams combined for 28 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter, and only 16 in the first three.
And yet another account of the game, from Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times, with a little historical blurb about the other leading scorers and former record holders:
The historian charged with updating the Southern Section record book is not required to expend much effort when it comes to boys' basketball career scoring records. All the person must do, it seems, is replace one Glendora High player with another. Casey Jacobsen put his name at the top of the list Tuesday night by scoring 33 points in a 70-64 Baseline League victory over Upland before a capacity crowd at Upland High. Jacobsen, a 6-foot-6 senior guard, has 3,067 points, passing the 3,053 points scored by former Tartan Tracy Murray, who played at Glendora from 1987-89 and is playing for the Washington Wizards. Cameron Murray, Tracy's brother, is third on the list with 2,842 points, scored at Glendora from 1991-94. He is a guard for Louisville. "I felt a lot of pressure, but it was positive pressure," said Jacobsen, who entered the game needing 20 points to break the record. "A lot of people came out tonight to support me and the team and that gave me incentive to go out and do the best I could." Jacobsen, who will play at Stanford next season, scored five points in the first quarter, six in the second, and 11 in both the third and fourth quarters. He made 10 of 20 shots, including six of nine from three-point range, and made all seven of his free throws. Upland (21-3) trailed 29-26 at halftime, but it was obvious the record was going to fall when Jacobsen came out after the break and made consecutive three-pointers from the right wing. He tied the record in the third quarter with two free throws that put the Tartans ahead, 45-32. On Glendora's next possession, Jacobsen took a pass from senior forward Chris Clark, squared his shoulders to the basket and made a three-pointer with 1:19 left in the quarter. "When I saw [Clark] coming at me, my eyes lit up," Jacobsen said. "When I got the ball, all I was thinking was, 'This one is going down.' " Play was stopped after the basket, Jacobsen was presented the game ball and he climbed into the stands and exchanged hugs and kisses with his parents. The victory clinched the league title for defending Division I-A champion Glendora (25-1).

Channel League
San Marcos 61, Santa Barbara 52--Both teams combined
for 50 fouls - including two technical fouls to SBHS coach Jeff Lavender - and shot 56
free throws. But for a Royals team which has struggled most of the year, Tuesday's
win over their arch-rival produced the perfect picture for every player's scrapbook. ``I
can't say enough about how our guys played,'' said San Marcos coach Chris Hantgin, whose
Royals are 2-5 in league and 9-14 overall. ``It's been a difficult season for everyone and
this definitely gives the kids a great memory." For Santa Barbara, meanwhile, the
loss was about as ugly
an experience as a team could have. The loss drops the Dons into a three-way tie for first
with Ventura, which beat Buena in overtime, and Dos Pueblos at
5-2. Santa Barbara, 22-4 overall, will finish the regular season Thursday at home against
Dos Pueblos, but the Dons will have to play without Lavender. He picked up two technicals
about two minutes apart early in the first quarter and was ejected. League rules require
he sit out the next game. Lavender, who previously had just one career technical at Santa
Barbara, picked up his first Tuesday for protesting a call and, most likely, adding the
referee's first name to his comment. That apparently was intended to put Lavender on a
short leash, for the same official hit him with a second ``T'' for a comment Lavender made
to the other official. ``It's hard to lose a coach over nothing,'' said Mike Valencia, the
Dons' assistant who took over, along with Greg Dansby. ``And Jeff pretty much runs the
offense. I really haven't done much at all with the offense all year." Just as bad
for Santa Barbara, star forward Tony Freeman was barely able to play. A leg injury which
has bothered him for a couple of weeks was aggravated in the first quarter and he was
limited to two one-minute stints for the remainder of the game. His status for Thursday is
unknown. ``He's had leg troubles for 3-4 games,'' said Valencia.
``Today, he just couldn't go. I asked him a couple times how it was and he just said, `Not
good." With Lavender and Freeman both gone, the Dons were clearly a bit confused on
offense. They hit only 7-of-29 shots for the first half and 14-48 in the game. San Marcos
took advantage to build a 17-9 lead as Trey Putnam buried a 3-pointer and two free throws
and Randy Moharram added two free throws. Santa Barbara chipped away late in the half and
closed to 29-27 on two free throws by Shawn Whilt. The Dons tied the game in the opening
minute of the second half on a basket by Ben Shelton. But San Marcos outscored the Dons
14-0 for the rest of the quarter to take a 43-29 lead and maintain a safe margin for the
remainder of the game. Free throws were plentiful throughout. the first half was littered
with 27 fouls and both teams were in the bonus before the end of the first quarter. Santa
Barbara was 21-for-35 from the line for the game and San Marcos was 15-for-21. "The
fouls turned it more into a half-court game, which was probably good for us against them,
with their athleticism," said Hantgin. "It was a battle out there." And who
better in a battle than Bradlee Van Pelt, the county's football player of the year? Van
Pelt scored only four points but grabbed 15 rebounds and also made four steals. "Bradlee
was huge," said Hantgin. "And so was Ben Arnold, for drawing a couple of
charges. Randy (Moharram) did a good job controlling the game. We had good variety."
Adam Nance led San Marcos with 15 points while Moharram and Casias each had 10. Craig

Citrus Belt League
Redlands 65, Rialto 63--A few baskets can change the
whole outlook of a season. Redlands was on the verge of elimination from playoff
contention Tuesday night when the Terriers found their shooting stroke in the fourth
quarter and rallied for a 65-63 victory over Rialto in a crucial Citrus Belt League game
at Redlands High. Freshman forward Lawrence Carrier's driving layup with four seconds left
gave Redlands a 64-63 lead, and Eric Siess made 1 of 2 free throws with three seconds left
as the Terriers (5-4 in league, 17-8 overall) kept their playoffs hopes alive. Redlands
and Rialto (5-4, 19-5) are tied for third place with one game remaining, and they split
the season series. If they remain tied after Thursday, there will be a playoff game Friday
to determine who goes to the playoffs. Riding high after a victory over Fontana Friday,
Rialto led by 12 points twice in the fourth quarter and by 10 points, 51-41, with 6:05
left in the fourth quarter despite numerous turnovers and missed shots. The mistakes
caught up to the Knights when Redlands started hitting its shots. Running its motion
offense better than it had in three games, Redlands, which was 10 of 19 from the field in
the quarter, began to chip away at the lead. Forward Danny Genung (20 points) scored nine
straight points to bring the Terriers within 61-60 with 1:12 left. After three consecutive
possessions ended in a turnover, 6-foot-11 center Alex Graham (nine points, 10 rebounds,
seven blocked shots) gave Redlands a 62-61 lead with 20
seconds left on a offensive putback. Morris Davis hit a 15-footer to put Rialto ahead
63-62 with 12 seconds left, but Redlands broke the full-court press and Jacob Avilla found
Carrier open at the top of the key for an uncontested layup. Rialto committed a turnover,
its 24th of the game, which led to Siess' free throw. The Knights, who were led by David
Joiner's 22 points, shot 35.8 percent (24 of 67) from the floor. RIALTO (63) -- Revels 16,

Fontana 73, Miller 64--About midway through the final quarter, Fontana went on a
6-0 spurt that helped the Steelers defeat Miller in a Citrus Belt League game and secure
their second consecutive league title. The Steelers made two free throws, then got two
consecutive steals and converted both baskets in that stretch. Baron Baker led Fontana
with 24 points, six assists, five rebounds and five steals. Michael Stephenson and Gary
Holmes had 11 points, and Joseth Dawson had 13 points for Fontana (8-1, 18-7). Miller's
Greg Nelson (26 points) made four consecutive three-pointers in the first quarter, giving
the Rebels (0-9, 6-18) the early lead. Nelson finished with eight three-pointers. Lyndale
Knight added 17 points for the Rebels. FONTANA (73) -- Holmes 11, Walker 6, Baker 24,

Crossroads 88, Montclair Prep 59-- We actually went out to Montclair to watch this game and were shocked at just how bad the coaching really is at Montclair. We've been hearing horror stories about this team this year, but we were a bit sceptical, so we had to check it out before the season ended, because Montclair Prep is almost assuredly not going to make playoffs for the first time in 22 years with a record of 6-18 overall and 2-7 in league. Crossroads improved to 9-0 in league and has already captured the league title. Montclair has some good athletes, but you'd never know it by the way they play. Montclair's coach, who might as well have been a potted palm, never got up off the bench, never called a timeout, and never once gave his players any words of advice or coaching that we could see, and we were there to watch just that. The team has a new, fairly athletic player, Tony McFadden, a 6'-3" junior who can run the court, has a decent handle, but can't shoot worth beans, at least he couldn't tonight. And amazingly, Montclair's coach, Bob Webb, played this newcomer for the entire game over others who have been with the team the whole season. We never saw McFadden out of the game, and from a team concept point of view, this sends an awful message to those players who have worked hard, but under-achieved, all season long. Crossroads was led by Devrin Anderson who had 20, Albert Gersten with 16, Daniel Utsiger with 15, and surprisingly, Isaiah Fox played sparingly and only had 5 points. We got there a bit late, about 5 minutes into the first quarter, but it was already a blowout, with the score 36-11. Wow. Time for a change again at Montclair, and time to bring Howard Abrams and Greg Patterson back again.

Sunbelt League
Murrieta Valley 79, Moreno Valley Rancho Verde 59-- All-Riverside County forward Brian Wethers may have had his lowest scoring game of the season, but Murrieta Valley still convincingly beat the fourth-ranked team in Division 2AA on the road. Simple court smarts proved to be the answer in the Nighthawks' 76-59 defeat of Moreno Valley Rancho Verde, Murrieta Valley's third victory this season over the Mustangs. Wethers' supporting cast moved around the ball on offense and kept a leash on the Mustangs, preventing them from playing up-tempo ball. "I don't think we've played a smarter game all year," Murrieta Valley coach Steve Tarabilda said. "With a team as athletic as (Rancho Verde), you can't try to beat them in the first quarter. You just gotta wear them down, and that's what we did." As a result, Murrieta Valley (7-2 Sunbelt, 20-5 overall) clinched at least a share of the league title. Rancho Verde (7-2, 23-3), can give the Nighthawks the title outright by defeating Moreno Valley Valley View on Thursday. If Valley View wins that game, the Eagles would be the No. 1 team from the Sunbelt by virtue of sweeping the season series with Murrieta Valley. "Now we have to go and root for these guys Thursday," Tarabilda said. Wethers scored just 12 points but compensated with 14 rebounds, six assists, three steals, two blocks and, most importantly, pulling Rancho Verde's hounding defense toward him, which allowed his teammates wide open looks. "I knew it would take a smart game for us to win tonight, not me scoring 30 points," Wethers said. "I knew they would stick down on me, and I had to find everyone else." And when Wethers found everyone else, they hit their shots. Kirk Stiewel scored a season-high 21 points and Jorge Cordova matched his top output with 20. Combined, Stiewel and Cordova shot 10 for 15 from the floor, and the Nighthawks as a team hit 50 percent. "I've felt I needed to contribute a little more with my scoring," said Cordova, who has averaged over 19 points his past three games. "I've been doing all the dirty work, but I needed to add a little more. I just took whatever came to me." Meanwhile, Rancho Verde couldn't get its shots to fall and, in the process, run the Nighthawks off the court. After taking a 15-7 lead, the Mustangs seemed to fall apart after a Murrieta Valley timeout. The Nighthawks scored the next nine points and never trailed again. Except for the first three minutes of the second half, the margin stayed in double-figures. Rancho Verde shot just 27 percent from the field. "We didn't get to run and that was our problem," Rancho Verde coach Bill Ciancio said. "If we did, we would have gotten better shots." MURRIETA VALLEY (76) -- Wethers 12, P.Brown 4, Cordova 20, Cole 7, Stiewel 21, Coyle 12. RANCHO VERDE (59) -- Pinnex 5, F.Brown 8, Norman 19, Nash 15, Shaw 10, Howard 2.
