More Catching Up: Tuesday, Feb. 2
Games From In & Around SoCal--(Feb. 4, 1999)

We're still catching up from earlier this week.  Here are the Tuesday games. A few more than Monday, and Wednesday and tonight (Thursday) still on the way.  There were some real standout performances on Tuesday, including Casey Jacobsen's 47 points in the game against Walnut.  We didn't get the details of the game, but we do know that Casey is fast closing in on the all-time scoring record in California, only 75 points behind former Glendora star (and NBA and UCLA star) Tracy Murray.  Casey could break the record on Saturday night against Troy in the Nike Extravaganza IV at Cal State Fullerton because he still has one more Baseline League game this Friday night at Chino.  Only one way to find out for sure:  Be at Cal State Fullerton Saturday night. Oh, by the way, his 47 points included 8 three pointers)

Other big performances Tuesday night were Matthew Nurse (not Wesley. . . Wesley plays in the state of Washington, Matthew plays for Antelope Valley Christian) had 40 and 9 assists;  Robert Miller (6'-3" Sr. SG) from Malibu had 36; Robert Turnbull (6'-4" Sr. SG/SF) from Mid City Magnet scored 33;    Brett Young (6'-4" Sr. G) had 32; and a bunch of guys had 31 points:   Carrol (Yucaipa), Juneau (Christian Center Academy), Kramer (Upland Christian). Eagen from West LA Baptist and Gerov from Valley Torah both scored 30 points.

Here's what else we know about the game from Tuesday, February 2, 1999:

Century League

Villa Park 69, Foothill 67--The Spartans defeated Foothill, 69-67, behind 17 points by Keith and set their sights on league-leading Canyon.   Adam Keith scored a game-high 17 points to lead visiting Villa Park to a 69-67 boys basketball victory against Century League rival Foothill on Tuesday and keep the Spartans' hopes alive for a league title. Villa Park (16-8, 6-1) came out strong in the first half, blowing past the Knights' full-court press to lead by as many as eight points in the second quarter. But Foothill (17-6, 4-3) battled back behind Chad Bigler, who scored 10 of his 11 points in the first half. Bigler hit a three-pointer with 4:04 remaining in the half to pull the Knights to one point behind the Spartans. Villa Park answered by breaking the full-court pressure and taking a six-point lead at the half. Foothill countered in the second half with a box zone defense, going on a 12-5 run to take a three-point lead with 3:15 remaining in the third quarter. The lead changed on virtually every possession in the final quarter. Keith hit three consecutive free throws with 1:16 remaining to give the Spartans a 69-63 lead, but the Knights refused to go away, Zach Smith hitting two free throws with 40 seconds remaining to make the score 69-67. Foothill rebounded a missed Villa Park shot with eight seconds remaining, but promptly committed a turnover. Pacific Hills 69, Montclair Prep 52--there was not much doubt about this one as the defending state champs in D-V never trailed, outscoring Montclair 19-15 in the first quarter, 11-10 in the second, and then going on a 22-9 scoring spree in the third.  Although Montclair "won" the fourth quarter 18-17, it was too little too late. Ryan Abrahams had 15 points, Joshua had 16, and Harvey 14 for Pacific Hills, which was coming off a tough loss to Crossroads from last Friday night which probably determined the outcome of the Delphic League title this year.   Montclair Prep was led by Josiah Johnson with 11 points; Prince had 9, Freeman 3, Koljan 2, McFadden 4, Sheslow 7, Kaufman 4, Anderson 7, Tatum 3, and Lucas 2.   Montclair Prep dropped to 5-17 overall and 1-6 in league.  Pacific Hill is now 5-2 in league.

Foothill League

Canyon 50, Hart 39--Anthony Fallasca scored 18 points and the Cowboys (13-10, 5-2) made 10 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter of a Foothill League victory at Hart (12-11, 1-6).  Payam Parvinchiha scored 16 points for Hart.

Burroughs 84, Valencia 64-- In a matchup between the two best players in the Foothill League, Kevin Krose of Burroughs High used his quickness and outside shooting to outplay Eskias McDaniels of Valencia on Tuesday night and lift the Indians into a first-place tie.  Krose finished with 23 points and eight rebounds to help the Indians defeat Valencia, 84-64, at Burroughs.  Burroughs (13-9, 5-2 in league play) is tied with Valencia (12-11, 5-2) and Canyon (12-10, 5-2) with three games remaining.  But no team is playing better than Burroughs, which has won four consecutive games.  Krose, a  6'-3"  senior, was just as effective on defense as he was on offense. He guarded the 6-6 McDaniels, who came in averaging 21.2 points and scored 28 points in a victory over Burroughs earlier this season. McDaniels was limited to 16 points and made only six of 18 shots.  Krose received plenty of support. Carlos Coronado and Brian Lee contributed 13 points apiece and Keith Jarbo, a 6-2 sophomore, had 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Valencia is trying to win its first league title in five years of varsity play. The Vikings fell behind, 34-27, at halftime and were down by 18 points through three quarters.  Coach Art Sullivan of Burroughs praised the all-around skills and hustle of Krose.
