Thursday (Next To Last Day) Scores
From In & Around SoCal--(Feb. 12, 1999)
One more day to go. Just tonight's games, Friday February 12, and the regular season is over. Playoffs will begin Wednesday, February 17 with the first round and wild-card games. The bracketing will be announced Sunday, and by late Sunday night, we hope to have it all up and running so you'll know where everyone is playing. In the meantime, many leagues and teams concluded their seasons yesterday (Thursday), and we have the results of most of those games (with the exception of a large portion of Orange County, and we're still inputting those. . . check back later and they'll magically appear, and this message will also disappear). Hopefully, by Saturday, we'll be able to post most of the league results and standings in the Southern Section. As for those of you who are asking about the standings in City Section schools from "over the hill" i.e., in metropolitan Los Angeles (as opposed to the Valley) we just don't have the standing information, and neither does the Los Angeles Times. If somebody wants to volunteer to call around to some of the schools and e-mail it in, we'll post it up, and will be eternally grateful. In any event, here's what we know from the next to the last day of regular season play:

Sunbelt League
Valley View 83, Rancho Verde 67 --"We finally got a banner!" The mantra Jerry Dupree shouted Thursday night after Moreno Valley Valley View defeated host Moreno Valley Rancho Verde, 83-67, said it all. The Eagles (8-2 in league, 18-7 overall) finished the Sunbelt League tied with Murrieta Valley for first place and became the first team other than the Nighthawks to defeat Rancho Verde this season. "This school's been waiting nine years for a banner, and I've been wanting one for four years," said Dupree. "Now we're gonna go as far as we can go in the playoffs!" Dupree was held to seven points but was picked up by solid contributions from his teammates. Mark Peters scored 19 points. Isaac Russ added 18, and James Mann scored 17. "It feels pretty good because it's a goal we set at the beginning of the year," said Valley View coach Jim Long. "But they scared us there a little at the end." Valley View's pressure defense helped keep Rancho Verde's offense in check through the first three quarters. The Mustangs (7-3, 23-4) trailed by as many as 17 points early in the fourth quarter but narrowed the gap to seven in the final two minutes. Valley View sank 11 free throws in the final 1:08, however, to seal the victory. "I think we all realize what it takes to win," Long said. "This was the biggest game these guys have played. We talked before the game about how big this was and how it was in our hands. We weren't going to give it away."
