CIF SS Playoffs: ALL OF
TONIGHT'S
SCORES HERE!!--(Feb. 26, 1999)
We've got all the scores from tonight's Southern Section Playoff games. There were a couple of upsets, but by and large most of the favorites won. Here are the scores, division by division. We don't have details of these games, but we will try to get most of them up by tomorrow.
Division I-AA Quarterfinal Results
Upper Bracket
Artesia 78, Eisenhower 51
Long Beach Jordan 57, Ayala 52
Lower Bracket
Corona Centennial 89, Valley View 88
Long Beach Poly 64, Ontario 50
So this sets up the Artesia v. Long Beach Jordan semifinal in the upper bracket, and Poly v. Centennial in the lower bracket. The Semifinals will be held Tuesday, March 2 at "Alternate Sites".
Division I-A Quarterfinal Results
Upper Bracket
Glendora 64, Nogales 43
San Bernardino Pacific 64, Santa Barbara 58
Lower Bracket
Simi Valley 70, Ventura 58
Mater Dei 72, Moreno Valley 54
The semifinal matchups will pit Glendora against San Bernardino Pacific, which will be just a great game, and Mater Dei v. Simi Valley, the battle of the big men and great outside shooting. These games will also be played Tuesday, March 2, at "Alternate Sites".
Division II-AA Quarterfinal Results
Upper Bracket
Dominguez 74, Sonora 59
Rancho Verde 81, Newport Harbor 70
Lower Bracket
Gahr 63, Brea Olinda 61
Pasadena 60, Redondo Union 50
Looks like the Dominguez v. Redondo final that everyone had been sorta, kinda waiting for will have to just wait some more, because it's not going to happen this year as the No. 2 seeded team, Redondo lost to Tim Tucker's team, and they lost pretty convincingly. Another upset in this division was Gahr beating Brea-Olinda, in a squeaker. The Semifinal games in this division will be played Tuesday, March 2, at "Alternate Sites" and will feature Dominguez v. Rancho Verde, and Gahr v. Pasadena.
Division II-A Semifinal Results
Upper Bracket
Inglewood 65, Ocean View 45
Lower Bracket
Mayfair 64, Santa Margarita 53
This will not be a repeat year for either Ocean View, which won the CIF SS title last year, or Santa Margarita, which advanced to become the State D-II Champions last year. The Inglewood v. Mayfair Final Championship game will be Saturday, March 6, at the Anaheim Pond.
Division III-AA Semifinal Results
Upper Bracket
Bishop Montgomery 70, Pomona 60
Lower Bracket
San Dimas 77, Alemany 72
The Indians from Alemany made it far this year, farther than anyone ever expected a team which didn't win a game last year to go, and coach Darryl McDonald and all of his fine players, including both the transfers and the ones who've been there since the beginning, are to be congratulated. Likewise, Pomona went farther than most expected them to, and they just ran into a tremendously talented Bishop Montgomery team. We really don't know much of anything about San Dimas, but you can bet that between now and the Championship game on Saturday March 6 at the Pond in Anaheim, we'll find out as much as we can about San Dimas, and will update everything we've got on Bishop Montgomery.
Division III-A Semifinal Results
Upper Bracket
Chaminade 60, Harvard-Westlake 57
Lower Bracket
Corona del Mar 61, Nordhoff 45
Chaminade and Harvard-Westlake had a battle for the ages tonight, and since we were at the game, we'll post up the results and stats in a while. We had no doubt that Corona del Mar would be the team to advance even though Nordhoff had played unbelievably well this year without Kris Kristofferson, but they just didn't have the depth that CDM has. The finals are next Saturday, March 6, 1999 at the Pond, so both teams will have more than a week to get ready.
Division IV-AA Semifinal Results
Upper Bracket
Serra 61, St. Paul 59
Lower Bracket
Twentynine Palms 65, Crespi 53
We're not sure that the lower bracket game is an upset, but if it isn't then it sure surprised us. Three of the four Mission League teams playing tonight are now out, and Chaminade in the D-III-A finals is the lone survivor. Crespi made it farther than any Crespi team has ever made it and they are certainly to be congratulated on that. As for Serra v. St. Paul, Jason Day's article on the game is already posted here and at Ultra StudentAthletes Online, so check it out. Unlike the other Divisions, IV and V will hold their finals next Friday night at the Bren Center on the campus of UC Irvine. The game will feature Serra v. Twentynine Palms. See you there.
Division IV-A Semifinal Results
Upper Bracket
Verbum Dei 77, Mojave 46
Lower Bracket
Crossorads 73, Santa Maria St. Joseph 56
No real surprise in either game. The Crossroads v. Verbum Dei Championship final will be Friday March 5, at the Bren Center at UCI. See you there.
Division V-AA Quarterfinal Results
Upper Bracket
Pasadena Poly 40, Campbell Hall 34
Desert 58, Calvary Chapel Downey 53
Lower Bracket
Pacific Hills 56, St. Anthony's 55
Santa Clara 81,. Chadwick 60
These wins are certainly not shockers, but the score of the Campbell Hall-Poly game is pretty surprising, and it must have been one really ugly game judging from the point totals. Poly will play Desert, and Pacific Hills, last year's State Champions will play the No. 2 seeded team. The semifinals are set for Tuesday, and will be played at Alternate Sites. Coin flips will be held tomorrow to determine which team is the "home" team; the home team gets to pick the alternate site. We'll have more on these games shortly.
Division V-A Semifinal Results
Upper Bracket
Price 69, West LA Baptist 42
Lower Bracket
Antelope Valley Christian 65, Rio Hondo Prep 55
The final in this division is set for next Friday at the Bren Center at UC Irvine. No surprises here, as the No. 1 seeded team Price, and the No. 2 seed AVC will face each other for the CIF Section title. See you there.
