Jason Day: Serra Beats
St. Bernards By 21--(Feb. 5, 1999)

Our friend and correspondent Jason Day went out to St. Bernard's in Playa del Rey where they matched up with Serra.  And if St. Bernard's had any thoughts about sweeping the series. . . .well, read Jason's article and see.  As always Jason's articles and other items of interest can be found here and at UltraStudentAthletes Online. Jason also has some pictures but he's going to wait until after he shoots some more stuff tomorrow at the Nike Extravaganza before posting any of them. Guess you'll just have to wait to see them.

Serra Gets Revenge...Beats St. Bernards by 21

by Jason Day

Two weeks ago these two teams met at Serra and St. Bernards shocked alot of people with an upset win.   Behind the play of JR F, Sherman Gay, who posted a triple double in that game, Bernards set the stage for the rematch.

Well, Serra took the stage, the show, and the game.  Ryan Odums led Serra with 22 pts.   Aerick Sanders chipped in 16, and Earl Lewis and Palmer Brown had 9 each.

Serra jumped all over Bernards early in the game cruising to a 12 point lead in the 1st quarter.  But Bernards roared back to tie at 25 and were within 7 (32-25) at the half.   That 7 pt drought was a sign of things to come.

In the second half, Lewis, Sanders, and Brown were just too much for Bernards to handle.

A significant bright spot was (once again) the play of Sherman Gay.  Many of you have seen the message board posts "jockin" this kid's game, and you may have noticed that some of the posts were written by his dad, a somewhat biased observer probably.   Well I gotta tell ya, I've seen this young man play 3 times this season, and all three times he's shown some formidable skill.  He had 26 pts. tonight, double digit boards (I stopped at 9 and I know he got at least one more after that) and a couple of athletic blocks that drew big "DAYUMS" from the crowd.  I'll go out on a limb and put this kid on my "remember that name" list.  The kid can really play.

Unfortunately for Bernards, they just couldn't muster the complete team effort they had in the last matchup.   Brandon Nunley was the only other player in double figures with 11 for Bernards.   Point guard Kyle Cox had 6.

So, all in all, Serra had a pretty easy time of it and came away with a 21 point victory 70-49.

We got some pics of this game, but we'll wait till after the Nike Extravaganza tomorrow night, to get the whole weekend's worth of flicks processed and posted at the same time.

Later
