Friday & Saturday Game Reports:
Southern Section & City Section--(Feb. 1, 1999)

Wow, hard to believe it's February already. Only two and a half weeks left of play in Southern Section, and the same is true of City Section, where the final league contests will take place on February 12.  The playoff brackets will be announced the weekend of February 13-14, and the first games will start that Monday, February 15.  So it's crunch time.  Here's what we know from Friday and Saturday night's games.

St. Anthony 83, Cantwell Sacred Heart 53--Junior guard Pearson Smith scored 10 of his game-high 22 points in the first half and the Saints (17-5, 4-1) used a tenacious man-to-man defense in the second half to overwhelm the host Cardinals (4-17, 0-5). Ventura 86, Dos Pueblos 79--The Ventura Cougars (13-9, 3-2) extended their winning streak to three games with a Channel League victory at Dos Pueblos. Ventura outscored Dos Pueblos (17-6, 3-2), 32-21, in the first quarter. The Chargers, winners of the last two Channel League titles, lost at home to rival Santa Barbara on Wednesday and star guard ShanTay Legans sprained his ankle. On Friday night, they lost a rough-and-tumble game at Sovine Gym to Ventura, 86-79, and dropped into a second-place tie with the Cougars. Dos Pueblos is 3-2 in league and 17-6 overall while Ventura improves to 3-2, 13-9. Cougar senior Jeff Staniland scored 16 of his 32 points in the first quarter and Gary Peterson hit a crucial 3-pointer down the stretch as Ventura built a double-digit lead early and fended off several rallies by Dos Pueblos. Legans played despite his ankle sprain and had 19 points and nine assists before fouling out with :49 seconds to play. Moreover, he made a difference defensively after switching to cover Staniland in the second quarter. Alex Jenkins, however, was the leader for Dos Pueblos with 24 points, six rebounds and eight blocked shots. Johnny Ortiz added 16 points and Brett Holbrook had 12. The game was marred by a third-quarter brawl which involved most of the players and some fans. After a long delay, two players were ejected. Perhaps because of the fight, perhaps because of some rough play underneath the basket, the game's finish was mostly a parade of players walking to the free throw line. Ventura hit 9-of-16 free throws in the final quarter and 24-of-33 for the game while Dos Pueblos was 10-for-10 in the fourth and 25-31 for the game. The Cougars, with Staniland scoring from several angles and often putting defenders on the floor, took a 32-21 lead after the first quarter. The Chargers responded in the second quarter. Ortiz hit three free throws and a 3-pointer, and brought the fans to their feet with a pass to Jenkins for a thundering dunk. A 3-pointer by Jenkins cut Ventura's lead to 39-38, but Peterson, Staniland and Mike Derse answered with baskets and the Cougars took a 48-40 lead into intermission. A 3-pointer by Holbrook brought Dos Pueblos within a basket again at 51-48, but Derse and Staniland responded
with a 6-0 run for Ventura and a pair of treys by Antwaine Richards helped the Cougars take a 68-56 lead into the fourth quarter. Ventura pushed the margin to 72-58 before Dos Pueblos began to chip away, mostly on baskets by Jenkins and free throws by Legans. A 3-pointer by Legans made it 76-71 but Peterson answered with a 3-pointer for Ventura. Two free throws by Legans with 2:36 to play made it 79-75 and Dos Pueblos had two possessions to try and cut the margin to a basket. They missed three shots, however, and Staniland finally converted a reverse layup for Ventura. A basket by Jenkins made it 83-79 and Dos Pueblos forced a turnover, only to turn it back over again. Ventura made three free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Liberty League

Windward 51, Buckley 49 (OT)-- Windward and Buckley again played to an overtime, although this one was two period shorter than the last meeting which went to triple overtime, a game that saw freshman point guard David Gale hit for 24 points, 7 steals and 6 assists, and Colin Ward-Henninger score 23 points.  On Friday night, Ward-Henninger only had 11 and Gale 6 points, and the teams high scorer was Adam Pastor with 15, and Alex Clancy hit for 7.  Buckley was still somewhat in shock from the truck called Providence which ran them over on Wednesday night, and in this low scoring contest, their transition game never really got going. Defensively, Buckley held Windward to just one three pointer in the game, but the Griffins were unable to get many rebounds and thus were left with mostly a half-court offense rather than the running game which worked so effectively in the first 4 league games.  Unlike most other leagues, the Liberty league has a 14 game league season, and Buckley and several other league teams have 6 or 7 games each remaining. Buckley is currently 11-7 overall and 5-4 in league.

The Bearcats' only basket was Kevin Cassidy's offensive rebound and putback.  Bentley had a game-high 21 points for the Greyhounds, while McKinney had 13 points and six rebounds, and

Simi Valley 94, Newberry Park 64-- The Pioneers did it again Friday night at Simi Valley, pounding Newbury Park, 94-64, to remove what little drama remained in the Marmonte League boys' basketball race.  Simi Valley (21-2, 8-0 in league play), moved two games ahead of the defending champion Panthers (14-5, 6-2) with four games to play.  For Simi Valley, more impressive than a season sweep over its most-formidable league opponent was the dominance and balance the Pioneers displayed.   Simi Valley led, 9-1, when Newbury Park took its first timeout. With Branduinn Fullove's short jump shot moments later, the Pioneers had a 13-4 lead and every starter had scored The lead grew and stayed that way. Michel's three-pointer with three seconds left made it 46-24 at the half.  Michel made a school-record six three-pointers in six tries Wednesday against Moorpark.  Brian Bobik provided a spark for Newbury Park, scoring eight points in the first quarter and finishing with 17.  Frustration for Newbury Park boiled over in the fourth quarter when Ken Barone, an assistant coach, received a technical foul and was ejected.

Agoura 78, Westlake 55--Garrett Lepisto scored 10 of his 23 points in the third quarter to help the Chargers (11-11, 5-3) win a Marmonte League game at Agoura.

Long Beach Poly 61, Long Beach Jordan 59 (OT)-- Unfortunately for the host Panthers, their Atlantic Avenue rivals were able to steal the contest, and in the process, knock them out of first place. Senior guard Ken Wright made two free throws with 6.3 seconds left in overtime to give the Jackrabbits a thrilling 61-59 victory over the Panthers before a raucous, standing-room-only crowd. Wright, who made five of nine 3-point shots, came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points for Poly (13-5, 5-1). He and sophomore forward Jonathan Harper combined to score all nine points for the Jackrabbits in
overtime.  Junior forward Joe Travis' layin with just less than three minutes left in the fourth quarter gave the Jackrabbits a 50-41 lead. But two turnovers and five missed free throws allowed Jordan (17-6, 4-2) to put together a 9-0 spurt, capped senior guard Craig Calloway's 3- pointer, that tied the score at 50 with 54 seconds left. Sophomore forward Markee White and junior point guard Wesley Stokes (14 points, 10 assists, six steals) both made foul shots to give Poly a 52-50 advantage with 5.2 seconds left in regulation. But Jordan inbounded the ball to Calloway (14 points), who drove the length of the floor and hit a 17-footer at the buzzer to send it into overtime.  The game was nearly halted with 32.3 seconds left in overtime and Poly leading, 59-57. Jordan's Darren Peterson threw an elbow at Poly's Lonnel Penman while wrestling for a loose ball on the ground, setting off a wild scene in which players from both teams squared up against one another and some spectators stormed the court. After police and campus security restored order, Panthers' forward Wilfred Lucas and Jackrabbits' guard Marcus Sargent were both ejected. After another Poly turnover, Calloway scored on a layup to tie the score at 59 with 11.8 seconds left. Wright was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play by forward Travon Bryant (14 points, 12 rebounds) and make both foul shots. Jordan had a final chance to tie, but Peterson missed a driving layup at the final buzzer.

Compton  69, Long Beach Wilson 58--There were plenty of courtside seats available for Friday night's Moore League matchup between Compton and Wilson. Particularly on the Tarbabes' bench. Playing short-handed with just eight players, the Tarbabes didn't come out on the short end, knocking off the visiting Bruins, 69-58.  The most noticeable absentee was senior point guard Tito Maddox, who was suspended one game by the Compton administration for an unspecified reason. Tarbabes coach Rod Palmer didn't elaborate on the situation involving Maddox, one of the premier players on the West Coast, but did say the offense was not that serious. Without its star, Compton (13-5, 5-1) crashed the boards, passed the ball, and ran the floor to get by the pesky Bruins (6-15, 2-4). Ahead by a point midway through the first quarter, Compton went on a 13-4 run to take a 22-12 lead, trying to convince the Bruins it didn't need Maddox to beat them. But Wilson, which got 16 points from Jaison Robinson and 10 from Brian Johnson, didn't buy into that, rallying behind Cory Harris, who hit three consecutive baskets to pull Wilson to within three points, 25-22, at the 4:50 mark of the second quarter. Three minutes later, Wilson had the score tied, 28-28. But Compton, behind the play of Ellis Myles (16 points and 12 rebounds), Terry Hosendov (19 points) and Donny Legans (15 points), opened the second half with a 14-5 spurt, improving its advantage to 46-33. The closest Wilson could get was 60-53 with 2:37 to go.

Millikan 61, Lakewood 48--Senior guard Andre Sparks led the Rams (10-11, 2-4) with 23 points in the victory over the host Lancers (2-19, 0-6). Lakewood was down by as many as 16 points late in the fourth quarter before Lammont Mitchell, who led the Lancers with 15 points, made three 3-pointers to cut Millikan's lead to just six points with three minutes left. But Millikan made their free throws down the stretch to seal the win. The Rams also got 13 points from Rodney Spencer, while Lakewood's Anthony Evans' added 11 in the loss.

Mt. Baldy League

Ontario 66, Etiwanda 53--Ontario High School's boys basketball team used an 18-2 run to close its 66-53 victory at the home of two-time defending Mt. Baldy League champion Etiwanda Friday night.  The Jaguars (19-3 overall, 6-0 in league) now hold a two-game lead in the league with four remaining. Seeking its first league title since 1995, Ontario is also ranked No. 2 in the Inland Valley by the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.  Ontario forward Jason Burrell scored a game-high 24 points, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that pulled the Jaguars within 47-46 at the end of the third quarter. Burrell then nailed all seven of his fourth-quarter free throw attempts to ice the outcome. Etiwanda is now 14-7,  and 4-2. The Eagles didn't trail until Burrell scored an inside basket and drew a foul, converting the free throw for a 53-51 advantage with 3:34 left in the fourth quarter. Until then, the hosts had successfully adjusted to the flaws Ontario detected while routing Etiwanda, 77-56, in their earlier meeting.  Beck scored 16 points in the first 10 minutes as Etiwanda picked apart the Jaguars' half-court defensive pressure to hold a 29-20 second-quarter lead and a 35-29 halftime advantage. Ontario committed nine turnovers in the first half and was 10-of-25 (40 percent) shooting from the field. The Jaguars intensified their defense after the break, denying the Eagles a shot during the first two minutes of the third quarter and even hassling the passes behind the 3-point line. Center Chris Burns had seven blocked shots to accompany his nine points and 10 rebounds. Ultimately, Etiwanda would finish with as many points in the second half (18) as it scored in the second
quarter alone. Etiwanda was 3-of-17 from the field in the fourth.

Montclair 50, Rancho Cucamonga 48--Ronald Williams hit two free throws with 38 seconds left and the Cavaliers (12-7, 3-3) followed with two big defensive stops to earn a home win over the Cougars (2-4 in league). Williams finished with 13 points and Garreth Read had 13 points with 11 rebounds and six blocked shots for Montclair. Karim McDougal had a game-high 17 points for the Cougars, while Derick Andrew added 11 points.

Northern League

Arroyo Grande 63, San Luis Obispo 49--Phillip Johnson was like a thorn in the side of the San Luis Obispo High boys basketball team.   Johnson scored 22 points to lead Arroyo Grande on Friday night, and was a constant disruption to the Tigers on defense.  Add a couple pricks in the side from Sean Shields and the result was a 63-49 win for the Eagles as they move to .500 in the Northern League with a 3-3 mark.  San Luis Obispo heads the other way.  After winning their first three league games, the Tigers are now 3-4 against Northern League opponents.   Shields only missed four shots from the floor in front of the home crowd at James Gym. He converted four three-pointers and went 3-of-4 from the free throw line for 17 points.  Unlike the last time the two teams played, when San Luis Obispo jetted to a 10-0 lead and went on to a 49-39 victory, Arroyo Grande took the upper hand Friday in the first quarter. The Eagles jumped to an 11-1 lead in a fast-paced first half. They led 18-8 after the opening eight minutes as the Tigers missed their first eight shots from the field.  With four reserves on the floor, San Luis Obispo got right back into the game with a seven-point run to  start the second quarter. Skyler Feltman scored all five of his points over the stretch. The run put the Tigers within three points at 18-15, but that was as close as they would get. Arroyo Grande held on to a 31-24 lead at halftime.   San Luis Obispo opened the third quarter almost the same way the first quarter began. The Tigers missed seven in a row from the field. That stretch allowed the Eagles to open up a 16-point lead and put the game away.  Arroyo Grande went to the free throw line 23 times in the second half and converted 13. For the game, the Eagles made 21 of 35 attempts off 25 San Luis Obispo fouls. Matt Williamson led the Tigers with 18 points, including eight of nine from the free throw line. Danny D'Entremont added nine points.   Arroyo Grande, 9-12 overall, plays Lompoc at home on Wednesday. San Luis Obispo, 10-10 on the season, hosts Santa Maria.
