Monday Game Results From
In & Around SoCal--(Feb. 11, 1999)

As the final week of regular season play gets underway, there are more than a few league races that have already been decided and more than a few which will ultimately be decided as late as Friday night.  And for some, the chance to get to the playoffs will not end on Friday night with the conclusion of the final games, but will depend either upon a flip of a coin (in the case of a tie for the last spot in league) or possibly even a selection by the CIF seeding committee which will make the "At-Large" selections for those divisions who will take teams who didn't make playoffs by virtue of league records.

In Southern Section, leagues with 4 teams (there are only a few) will have two teams qualify for playoff spots (1st & 2nd).  For the vast majority of leagues which have 5 or 6 teams, the top three teams will automatically qualify for a playoff berth,  In 7 or 8 team leagues (there are about 10 of these leagues) the top four teams will qualify automatically.  Thereafter, there will still be "at-large" berths which will take teams, depending upon the need to fill slots, who have recorded more than 10 regular season wins. Selection is not automatic, but in some of the larger divisions (Divisions V-AA and V-A for example) where there are 32 team brackets, historically at least 40 teams will make up the pool of teams, with 16 of those teams being selected as "Wild Card or At-Large" teams who end up playing a first round; the winners of the wild card games are then seeded into the 32 team playoff bracket.

In any event, the action this week will be fast and furious.   Here's what happened Monday around the Southern Section (there were no City Section boys' games played Monday):

Antelope Valley Christian 81, Victory Valley Christian 50-- Matthew Nurse scored 13 points, Peter Beaudin scored 17 and had 11 rebounds, while Jamal Flanagan had 22 and 14 boards for AVC which improved to 16-2 overall and 8-0 in league.   John Cho was the team's high scorer with 23 points and 23 rebounds.

Providence 62, Oakwood 31-- Gino Pedraja had 27 points, including six three-pointers, for Providence (14-5, 8-3) in a Liberty League game. Providence next plays Wednesday against Viewpoint, then has games Thursday and Friday against Avalon at Providence to close out the season.  In the event Providence wins all three, they will win league and Yeshiva and Windward would tie for second;   in the event Providence loses any one game, Windward, Yeshiva and Providence would go into a three way tie for first, leaving Buckley and Holy Martyrs to contend for second, third or fourth depending upon the outcome of Wednesday's games.
