CIF SS Playoffs: Milken Advances In D-V-AA--(Feb. 19, 1999)
Two boys games were played on Thursday night: The Agoura v. Redondo game (which we didn't know had been rescheduled) and the Milken Community High School v. Capistrano Valley Christian game. Milken won, beating CVC 55-45, and thus broke it's usual "one-and-out" style in the playoffs.
The game was highlighted by Milken's John Sher, who hit four three pointers in a game which got off to a very rocky start: At the end of the first quarter, the score was only 4-6, with Milken leading. But in the second quarter, both teams found their range and their games, and they played to a 16-16 second quarter scoring tie, giving Milken a 2 point lead at the half, 22-20
In the third quarter, it was CVC that came out flat, as the Milken Wildcats outscored Capistrano Valley 18-8 to stretch their lead to 40-28. And in the fourth quarter, CVC tried desparately but could never really make up more than 2 points in the overall deficit, ultimately winning the fourth quarter scoring 17-15, but losing the game 55-45.
For Milken, Steve Taylor also had 21 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals, while Sher finished with 17, Bobby Bassman had 8, Alex Raminfar had 2 and 6 steals, while point guard Daniel Greenberg had 5 ponts and 7 assists, and Hendlish had 2. Milken, which improved to 17-4 overall, will now play the winner of Chadwick v. Thacher (played Friday night) at a location to be determined by a coin flip which is scheduled to be held Saturday at the CIF Southern Section office.
For Capistrano Valley Christian, a team which had done very well this year, making it regularly into the SCIBCA polls, it was a bitter defeat and an end to a fine season
Capistrano Valley Christian featured Ryan Allen (6'-1" Sr. F) who came into the game averaging 13.5 ppg, and 6.3 rbg, Caleb Lund (6'-1" Sr. G) who had a season average 11.8 ppg, and 2.2 rbg, and James McChesney (6'-1" Sr. F) averaging 16.5 ppg, 3.2 rbg. In Thursday night's game, Allen was the high scorers for CVC, but scored just a little below his average, hitting for only 12, while Lund was far below average with only 7 points, and McChesney only managed 8. Other scorers were Graves with 5, Smetona with 5 and Roth with 6.
