LA City Section Playoffs:
First Round Scores Reported--(Feb. 19, 1999)

We've got all the City Section scores, with the exception of one, Manual Arts, and while we're not making any wild predictions, we feel pretty safe in saying that we'd bet the farm that the Toilers won today.  Otherwise, there were some first round upsets, mostly in the Division Championship Tournament, but there was one huge one in the City Championship bracket:  No. 4 Fremont lost to No. 13 Franklin, by a score of 83-75.  Hmmm. Guess we'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out how Franklin pulled it off.  But we have to say we're not surprised, because the Fremont team we previewed in September and October and the team we saw at the Thanksgiving week Manual Arts "We Care Classic" were two different teams, and the one on the floor was very different than the one we had previewed.   Then at the Reebok Las Vegas Holiday Prep Classic, Fremont proved they were indeed very beatable, and confirmed again that they would be no match against teams like Manual Arts, which had beaten them by close to 50 points at the We Care. We haven't yet seen Franklin, this year, but we've talked to a lot of coaches who've played them, and they are definitely for real.  Evidently they proved that tonight by beating last year's City Section 4A runner's up and State Regional entrant. Man, it's really a different world from one year to the next.

Other upsets were No. 16 Banning, whom everyone had written off as not very impressive,  knocked off No. 1 seed South Gate by two points in overtime.  No word on how many South Gate's Ronald Johnson scored, but evidently, it was three short of what they needed. Also in the Divison bracket, No. 13 Poly beat No. 4 Marshall, and No. 12 San Fernando beat No. 5 Locke.

For now here are the scores.  We'll have details tomorrow.
