Santa Barbara 58, JW North 53-- We got this one off the Message Forum. Here's a message left by an obvious fan of J.W. North who was clearly distressed by what he/she witnessed at the game. The views expressed are not ours, so don't get mad at us. Leave all angry messages (and witty replies) over on the message board.
"There has never in the history of basketball been a more selfish display by juniors as was shown in the Santa Barbara game by J. W. North's guards. They shot the ball consistently from the outside and consistently they missed throwing up brick after brick or airball after airball or wild shot after wild shot leaving other team mates wide open. Santa Barbara's No. 24 (Brent Williams?) must have lit Billy Jones up for 4 threes, yet Jones never seemed to be anywhere near No. 24 on defense. Coaching was no different they never adjusted. Derek Mgbeke should have been on this man as he was the only starter to hurt J.W. North. Speaking of Mgbeke, Santa Barbara ran a box and one on him and again coaching never adjusted. In previous games North's entire starting lineup scored in double digits---and they won. This game Mgbeke by sheer will scored 16 often off passes from Carlyle and by creating his own shot and point guard Raji Burnett who scored a team high 18. Problems began in practice the day after the first round when alledgedly point guard quit the team because he felt as though he was not getting enough shots. How can one quit when one knows that they are the only point guard on the team (and after a win)? How can one complain that Derek Mgbeke shoots too much when he avereged 15 shots a game and made 12 of them. Mgbeke, also avereged 9rbds and two steals a game--and North won!!!!!! "
Division IVAA Semifinal
Crespi 77, Carpinteria 51
We went out tonight to the Crespi v. Carpinteria game tonight at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, and it was a pretty full house. Carpinteria came out strong, as did Crespi, with Marcin Jagoda, Blake Tibbets, Andrew Moore, Aaron Tunney, Gregg Guenther, Tim McDonough and Pat Casella all shuttling in and out throughout the first half. The game was close, tied or within one or two points for most of the first quarter and at the end of the first, Crespi had pulled ahead by 6, and led 18-12. In the second quarter, Carpinteria closed the gap to one or two several times, and up until about 4 minutes to play in the second quarter it was still a close game. At that point, Carpinteria just fell apart defensively and couldn't find the hoop on offense, and by the half, Crespi led by 11, 35-24. In the third quarter, Crespi extended the lead by 5, outscoring Carpinteria 21-16 to lead by a score of 56-40. The fourth quarter was anything but garbage time, and Crespi's subs came in and scored another 21 points, while holding Carpinteria to just 11.
Final score Crespi 77, Carpinteria 51. Pat Dornan had 15 points, and played very strong, driving to the hole, hitting from the outside, and providing one of the few moments of comic relief when he drove to the hole and slipped on a wet spot on the floor, winding up sitting down, sort of a Charlie Chaplinesque moment. But we were really impressed by his overall play, and he's really slimmed down and gotten a lot stronger in the past year, and from what we saw, he can definitely play at the next level. Tim McDonough had 5 points, and handled the ball well, picking his moments, and playing excellent defense. Marcin Jagoda got 16, a team high, and he did it steadily and quietly, without a lot of fanfare. Blake Tibbets, the team's toughest player, scored 4. Aaron Tunney had 2, Andrew Moore 7, Michael Luderer 7, Pat Cassella 7, Mike Grimes 5, Navid Askari 2, Charlie Sheibler 1, and Gregg Guenther 7.
Carpinteria had a couple of guys we've seen previously, who played very well. John Barbieri, Carpinteria's point, penetrated almost at will, but he's got this really annoying habit of trying to go "up and under" and he probably missed as many from within 2 feet as he made; he got fouled a bunch of times, and our belief is that it's always better to go strong and hard to the hole with the ball high if you're a 6'-0" guard trying to go through or around a 6'-8" center. . . you're going to either score or get fouled, so why not increase the odds of making the shot? Oh, well, Barbieri had a great night anyway, scoring 20 points, but it could as easily have been 40. Tyler Matsen was Carpinteria's other leading scorer with 15. We didn't get the rest of their scoring, but we'll have it tomorrow.
