CIF SS Playoffs: Division V-A
First Round Results--(Feb. 18, 1999)
In addition to the Wild Card games played on Wednesday night in Division I-AA, I-A, IV-AA, V-AA and all of the First Round games played in Division IIA, there was another division that also played its' first round games on Wednesday: Division V-A. And this division is just huge. There were 15 games played on Wednesday night. We couldn't get all of the details, but we have scores on most of them. Hey, we aren't perfect, but we should also note that not even the CIF SS website has the scores for any of these games posted either, so we're at least a couple of steps ahead of them. Here's what we know:
Upper Bracket
Price (Coastal Life #1)-- Price, the No. 1 seed in the Division, had a bye and didn't play (is that redundant or what?) They will play their first game in the Second Round against
Shandon (Coast Valley #2) v. New Roads (Free Lance)--not only was no box reported for this one, no details and not even a score. And if you think we're alone in not knowing what happened here, even the CIF SS website is drawing a blank on this one. It really doesn' t matter anyway though because the winner gets Price, who will win in the second round we predict.
Immanuel Christian (Hi Lo #1) v. Bethel Christian Lancaster (At Large)--no score for this one either. The winner gets Orangewood Academy on Friday night at a site to be determined by a coin flip.
Orangewood Academy (Academy #4) 65, Twin Pines (Freedom #2) 54 -- Patrick Rainey scored 15 points with 15 rebounds and 12 assists as the Spartans (18-8) won at Twin Pines. Orangewood Academy will play the Emmanuel Christian-Bethel Christian winner on Friday night.
Hillcrest Christian/GH (Westside #4) 48, Cuyama Valley (Coast Valley #3) 46--Amit Nat scored 11, while Amrit Nat (we're guessing they're brothers) scored 5 and 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Eric Hodgkins had 14, Joseph Nessim 6 and 10 boards, Sundeep Sahni 6 and 7 boards, Humphrey 4, and Parker 2 for Hillcrest. Cuyama was led by Shawn Dobante with 18 points and Scott Stonebraker with 10.
Heritage Christian (Express #2) 72, Pacific Christian (Valley #4) 43-- Matt Winter scored 20 points to lead host Heritage Christian (15-9), which led 26-9 after one quarter. Pacific Christian finished 7-12. Todd Warner also scored 15 for the host Patriots.
West LA Baptist (Westside #3) 88, Christian Center Academy (Metro #3) 52-- No details, no box, no nothin' except the score.
Rolling Hills Prep (Express #1) 62, Cornerstone Christian (At-Large) 29
Laguna Blanca (Condor #1) 62, North County Christian (At Large) 60 -- Chris Tamas had 20 points and 13 rebounds and three other Owls were in double figures, but Laguna still had to sweat out a first round CIF 5-A win at home. Laguna, 20-5, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, could not stop 6-foot-5 guard Jon Peak, who scored 32 points for North County Christian. The Owls led the entire game but North County stayed close and crept within a basket at 61-58 with 40 seconds to play. Brian Niehaus responded with a free throw to essentially ice the game. North County scored at the buzzer. Garrett Wilson added 13 points while Niehaus and Trevor Scott had 11. NO. COUNTY CHRISTIAN-Casle 8, Graham 5, Martzen 9, Peak 32, Smith 6. Total 26 6-10 60. LAGUNA BLANCA-Scott 11, Wilson 13, Tamas 20, Ferguson 7, Niehaus 11. 26 8-15 62. 3-point goals-NC 2 (Peak 2), LB 2 (Wilson, Ferguson). Fouled out-none. Laguna Blanca will play Santa Clarita Christian on Friday night.
Santa Clarita Christian (Westside #2) 79, First Lutheran (Heritage #4) 64--Andrew Duncan scored 34 points, Mike Brewer added 24, including three consecutive three-pointers in the second quarter, and the host Cardinals (18-6) won a Division V-A first-round playoff game. When the Cardinals aren't attempting to play a Rick Pitino-style of basketball a run-and-gun, helter-skelter system and administer a more half-court, patient approach instead, there aren't many teams who can stick with them. Against First Lutheran of Sylmar in a CIF-Southern Section Division V-A first-round matchup Wednesday night at The Master's College, DeWayne's troops discovered why he uses the word "execution" in his everyday vernacular. After three quarters of struggling to put away a pesky Falcon club, the Cardinals played a methodical final eight minutes, scoring on nearly every possession to run away with a 79-64 victory. SCC (18-6) will play against Laguna Blanca Friday in a second-round game at a site to be determined by a coin flip this morning. "We began to run the offense we are suppose to run and we continued running it," said Stephens of the fourth-quarter dominance in which SCC outscored First Lutheran (9-12), 23-11. DeWayne's offensive strategy is another simple philosophy: Utilizing the obvious height advantage his team usually holds over most foes. The strategy begins and ends with getting the ball as many times as possible into the hands of the team's leading scorer, 6-foot-5 senior Andrew Duncan. With SCC ahead just 56-55 moments into the fourth quarter, Duncan constantly bullied his way to the hoop, either finding his way to the free-throw line or simply finishing on his own as the Cardinals went on a 10-0 run to finally break the Falcons' spirit. Duncan was responsible for eight of the 10 points during the decisive surge, with all the points coming in the half-court set. Duncan is DeWayne's prime example of exploiting that natural edge. He becomes an unstoppable force in the half-court offense, scoring at will with his ability to slash and finish. He ended with a game-high 36 points, hitting double figures in every quarter except the third, which he had eight points in. And if opponents try to zero in on Duncan, it leaves room for senior guard Mike Brewer to display his sweet stroke. Brewer helped deliver a wake-up call for his Cardinal teammates after a sluggish first quarter that left SCC down 20-16. He accounted for 11 consecutive points with three 3-pointers and a 12-foot jumper to put SCC ahead, 32-27, midway through the second. Duncan kept the Falcons at arm's length to the break, dropping in eight straight points as SCC led at the half, 42-35. However, the lead disappeared as quickly as it was built up. Led by guards Chad Dorio (team-high 18 points) and Robert Johnson (14), the Falcons wouldn't fly away, cutting the deficit to 56-53 with a third-quarter run. SCC's execution on both ends in the fourth was textbook. First Lutheran had just one field goal over the first four minutes of the final session, while the Cardinals' half-court offense clicked and they were near-perfect (7-for-8) from the charity stripe. Brewer had four 3-pointers, supporting Duncan's inside supremacy with a 22-point effort. Center Adam Gregory gave SCC a solid presence underneath, grabbing eight boards and adding eight points. Brandon Buehlman was also strong in the paint, chipping in six points, and senior guard Kevin Derr scored seven while playing a top-notch game as the Cardinals' floor general.
