CIF SS Playoffs: One More First
Round Game Switched--(Feb. 18, 1999)

We should have seen this one coming, but it's another lesson for us all in the tremendous religious and cultural diversity among the many, many teams participating in Southern Section in basketball.

Glendale Adventist, a D-V-AA team, made the playoffs as a the No. 2 team from the Coastal Life League.  They were slotted to play Pacific Hills in the First Round on Friday night at 7:30.

But like the Jewish schools participating in playoffs (Milken, Yeshiva, and Valley Torah, all of whom had games rescheduled)  this game had to be rescheduled too.  Seems that Glendale Adventist doesn't play games on Friday nights or during the day on Saturday either.  Why not?  Well, we went looking, and found an explanation about the Seventh Day Adventists sabbath observance at the Religious Tolerance website:

"Perhaps their most obvious practice which differentiates [Seventh Day Adventists] from many other churches is that they continue the Old Testament practice of observing Saturday as their Sabbath (from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset). The Seventh Day Adventists accepted this belief and practice from the Seventh Day Baptist church in the 19th century. The SDA church has claimed that a Saturday Sabbath was observed by the primitive Christian church during the first two or three centuries."

End of religious diversity lesson; back to hoops.  So the Glendale Adventist v. Pacific Hills game has been rescheduled for Saturday night, at 8:00 p.m. at Brentwood School.

See you there.
