CIF Southern Section Playoffs: D-VA Reports On
Pilgrim, Price, Orangewood--(Feb. 21, 1999)

If you read our reports on some of the Division V-A playoffs, then you know that details on some of the games were a little sketchy, so we asked for help from readers who either saw these games or had access to published reports elsewhere. We've already gotten a few reports on the teams at either end of the brackets, No. 1 Seed Price, who will play Orangewood Academy in the Quarterfinals on Tuesday, and Pilgrim, not seeded nearly as high, who will play the No. 2 Seed Antelope Valley Christian.

One reader, DeVonteJ (we won't give out his real e-mail address) wrote:

Hey, I saw Orangewood play against Twin Pines, and I also saw Price play against Shandon, and they are both two great teams. They met on two occasions last year. The first occasion being in Orangewood's New Year Classic, which Orangewood won, beating them. Then they met again in the quarter finals at Price, which Price won in the fourth quarter. So this has become a heated rivalry. The rematch will be played at Orangewood. Orangewood has the second leading scorer in the county on their squad, and a gaurd/forward, that if not, is damn near averaging a triple double a game. Also, In the Price v. Shandon game, their main man was down for at least 5 minutes in the fourth quarter, but made it off the court on his own will. So you can see who I'm putting my money on for the quarterfinals.

We also heard from reader Henry Chun, who wrote:

Hey, I dont have the exact stats from the game but Pilgrim should have blown this team out by at least 10-20 points. The inconsistency of their free throw shooting and turnovers made this closer than it seems. They feature a 6-3 center/forward junior named Chris Bailey who I think is their best player. He averages about 23 a game and had around 20 in their last game. Their second best player is senior guard/SF Raymond Park who has a decent game. He is a good perimeter shooter and often looks to drive in and make something happen. Their other starters are solid players but it is a coin flip to see who shows up for which game. The 4 spot goes back and forth between seniors Brook Davis and Charles Hunter. Brook is lighter and smaller which allows most players to post him up but Charles is a 6'-2" , 260 who will put a body on any player. This team doesn't get that much pub so nobody really knows what to expect from them. Last year, they upset the #1 team in their region (Bishop Diego) which I think was the biggest upset in the D-V playoffs last year. Almost all of this year's team was around for that last year so I expect Pilgrim to put up a good game against AVC. The game will be at Daniel Murphy High School in Los Angeles Tuesday night. Pilgrim has lost only one game their in their playoff history and that was last year against an overpowering Santa Clara. This gym has been the site of many Pilgrim Playoff upsets so expect a good game on Tuesday. I hope that this has been helpful.
