CIF Southern Section Boys'
Division V-AA & VA Pairings--(Feb. 14, 1999)

We spent the entire morning down at Gahr High School as the CIF Southern Section playoff pairings and brackets were announced this morning.   While the crowd was still busy as the smaller brackets were announced, it had thinned out considerably when the pairings for Division III and IV were announced.

Here are the pairings for each of the V-AA and V-A Division playoffs, each a 32 team bracket with some wild-cards. All of the first games will take place on Friday, February 19, 1999.  The Second Round will take place on February 23;   the Semifinals will take place on March 2, 1999, while the finals is at the Pond at Anaheim.

We don't have time to actually put up the bracketing right now, but we'll do it later.

The home team is the first team listed.

Lots of confusion and much controversy about this division, since D-VAA appeared to be the only division which was put together almost like a regional, with wild-cards all over the place, principally, because there were more than 32 teams in the division which qualified under the system of recognizing league finish position as the principal criteria for playoff qualification.

We think that what the CIF should do is go to the system employed by the City Section, simply take everyone's record in the division, rank the teams by order of record, and then look at the strength of schedule, head to head competition, and the like.  Looking at league records makes not much sense as the prime qualification in Division V since the leagues are so disparate in quality.  In any event, no at large's were taken at all in Division IV-AA, and there were 4 taken in V-A.

In any event, all games are at  7:30 p.m. at the home school.  We'll have the actual bracketing up later, and more commentary and analysis.
