CIF Southern Section Boys'
Division II-A First Round Results--(Feb. 18, 1999)

In addition to the Wild-Card games played Wednesday night, two other divisions had their first round play, and Division II-A was one of them.  Here's what we know about the games from last night. Interestingly, not a single home team lost, which we guess will make the seeding committee very happy with itself.

Upper Bracket

Inglewood (Bay #1)-- did not play because of a Bye--they will next play Los Altos on Friday night at Inglewood.

Los Altos (Miramonte#1) 57, Bishop Amat (At Large) 54-- Los Altos was led by Justin Van Nuyne with 16 points and Shaun Cody who dropped 15 in to help Los Altos improve to 17-9 overall and pick up the first round win.  Bobby Godinez had 10 and Lex Brown also scored 12 for Los Altos, while Justin McMath had 1, and Josh Allen 2 points.  Bishop Amat, which ends it's season at 16-10 overall, was led by Josh Call with 18, and Eddie Rodriguez with 14.  In the first quarter of this game, it was all even, 13-13, and Bishop Amat led at the half after outscoring Los Altos 15-8 in the second.  But in the third quarter, Bishop was outscored 21-10, and never recovered despite "winning" the fourth quarter 16-15.   Los Altos will now match up against Inglewood on Friday night at a site to be determined by a coin flip this morning.

Lompoc (Northern #1) 77, Charter Oak (At Large) 67-- Charter Oak trailed 14-11 at the end of the first quarter, and then was outscored by Lompoc 22-11 in the second, and never recovered as Lompoc pulled out the first round win.  Jernon Barnes scored 25 points for Lompoc in the win, while Jay Kennedy added 15, Maurice McLean had 11, and Phillip Wright added another 10.   Charter Oak, which ends its season at 11-16, was led by Vincent Tolentino with 23 and Jonathan Jones with 11. Lompoc, which improved to 15-11, takes on Newbury Park on Friday night at a site to be determined by a coin flip this morning.

Newbury Park (Marmonte #2) 81, Sierra Vista (Valle Vista #2) 65-- Jesse Roche scored 29 points and Newbury Park (19-5) beat visiting Sierra Vista (16-5) in the first round of the Division II-A playoffs. Roche made four of his six three-point baskets in the first quarter, helping Newbury Park take a 27-10 lead. Brian Polen had 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Panthers.  Newbury Park will now take on Lompoc on night

Ocean View (Golden West #1) 76, La Habra (At Large) 42--Rashaw McAfee scored 16 points, Torin Beeler added 15 and Tony Dow 14 as the Seahawks (23-5) won at home against the Highlanders (11-14). The host Seahawks, 1998 Division III-AA champions, opened their quest for the Division II-A title with a resounding 76-42 victory. Nathan Allard and Adam Provence each scored 10 points for La Habra (12-13).   The Highlanders trailed, 16-8, after the first quarter and La Habra went to man-to-man coverage, but paid the price, committing nine first-quarter turnovers.  Ocean View, meanwhile, made only six of 18 shots in the first quarter.  The Highlanders were seven of 23 from the floor in the first half; Ocean View was 10 of 25. But La Habra sent Ocean View to the line 13 times and the Seahawks came away with nine points. La Habra went 0 for six.  The Seahawks made some adjustments in the third quarter, which led to a 23-14 run.  Ocean View will play Barstow in the second round Friday. A coin flip this morning will determine the home team.

Barstow (Mojave river #1) 59,  Palm Desert (Desert Valley #3) 57--Palm Desert (11-14) held Barstow (21-4) to 11 points under its average but fell short in the upset bid. Joey Gill tied it up with two consecutive three-pointers for Palm Desert, then the teams traded a two point lead in the final minutes. Palm Desert missed its final shot. Gill ended the game with 22 points and Eric Jackson had 14 points and five blocks.  PALM DESERT (57) -- Gill 22, Kogus 3, Slone 8, Jackson 14, Fernandez 8, Allen 2. BARSTOW (59) -- T.Yarber 4, Hardrick 2, Alonzo 9, A.Yarber 14, Mann 14, Riley 14, Barron 2. Halftime score -- Barstow 27-23. Three-point goals -- Gill 3, Alonzo. Total fouls -- Palm Desert 17, Barstow 10. Fouled out -- Kogus. Barstow will match up against Ocean View on Friday night.

Atascadero (Los Padres #1) 66, San Luis Obispo (Northern #3) 65 (OT)--Despite the attempt to get away from "regionalization" the CIF scheduled what was otherwise a regional game for these two neighboring leagues, who have played each other earlier this season. And if familiarity breeds contempt, as the saying goes, Atascadero struggled badly with SLO before pulling out the win. The Los Padres League co-champion Greyhounds needed overtime Wednesday to beat San Luis Obispo 66-65 in a CIF-Southern Section Division II-A game in Ewing Gym.   San Luis Obispo finishes its season at 11-13.  The Greyhounds never trailed in the second half, but five times saw the Tigers tie the score.  The last of the ties came with eight seconds left in regulation, when Matt Williamson scored inside to knot the score at 54.  Atascadero led by as many as eight in overtime, but the Tigers used late three-pointers from Dan D'Entremont and Brent Walker to keep up the pressure.  The Greyhounds' Jonathan Bentley had 16 points, Donovan 13, and Jaysen McKinney and Brandon Cohen 11 each. McKinney added 14 rebounds.  San Luis Obispo's D'Entremont had 23 points -- six three-pointers -- and Ryan Sutcliffe 20 points and 13 rebounds.  The Greyhounds, 18-6 overall, move into a second-round game Friday against fourth-seeded Pacifica, a 52-47 winner over Bonita.  The site will be determined today by coin flip.

Pacifica (Garden Grove #1) 52,  Bonita (At Large) 47-- Pacifica, the fourth-seeded team in the division, withstood a late rally by visiting Bonita to advance. The Mariners (26-1) led, 46-30, after three quarters but Bonita pulled within five points with two minutes left after a barrage of three-pointers. Brian Girard then hit a three-pointer with one second left on the shot clock to put the Mariners back in control. Danny Dinh scored 16 points and Jason Simpson had 11 rebounds for Pacifica, which meets Atascadero in Friday's second round. Pacifica will take on Atascadero on Friday night.

Lower Bracket

Muir (Pacific #1) 71,  Magnolia (At Large) 40--The Mustangs initially fell behind 4-0, but came out to take control with a 31 point win.   Magnolia ends it's season with a 13-14 overall record. Junior guard Darelle Rowe led the Mustangs with 13 points and John Parker had 12. Reserve junior guard Jonathan Williams had 11 points, senior forward Nate Johnson had 10 and Jeff Washington scored nine.  Sophomore guard Brandon Willis, up from the jv, picked up five pints in the final three minutes of the game, while reserve forward Adrian McKoy had four points. Muir takes on Laguna Beach on Friday night at a site to be determined by a coin flip this morning at the CIF offices in Cerritos.

Laguna Hills (Pacific Coast #1) 64,   Valencia/Placentia (Orange #3) 53-- Valencia had previously defeated the Hawks in the Orange Tournament this season, and the Tigers had given Laguna Hills all kinds of trouble with their quickness and
shooting.  But the Laguna Hills Hawks were breathing easier after a 64-53 victory Wednesday night at Laguna Hills. This was Laguna Hills' first playoff win since 1004.   Josh Pierson scored 11 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter for Laguna Hills, including four of four free throws in the final minute that extend the Hawks' lead from 59-53 to 63-53 with 36 seconds left.  Pierson and Eittreim, who had 17 points, combined to make nine of 11 free throws.  Leading only 17-15 after the first quarter, Laguna Hills switched from a man-to-man defense to a 2-3 zone midway through the second quarter and held Valencia (9-20) to one field goal the rest of the half to build a 29-21 halftime lead.  The Hawks took a 37-23 lead on a Pierson three-pointer with 4:22 left in the third, but Valencia switched to a full-court pressure defense.  The Hawks, who turned the ball over only four times in the first half, had eight in the second half, most a result of the press.  As if the turnovers weren't enough, Valencia guard Emanuel Ortega suddenly found his touch at the same time. Ortega, who made one of 11   three-pointers through the first 2 1/2 quarters, made three of his next six attempts from long range, the last pulling the Tigers to within 59-51 with 1:28 left to play. He finished with 16 points.  Laguna Hills (16-10) will play Pasadena Muir in the second round Friday at a site to be determined by coin flip.  Friday night in the second round

Temple City (Rio Hondo #1) 75,  Bolsa Grande (Garden Grove #3) 64--Bolsa Grande fell behind, 22-10, in the first half but rallied to tie the score, 31-31, in the third quarter. Temple City then pulled away again with a 7-0 run, and Bolsa Grande (15-12) couldn't close the gap to fewer than five points the rest of the way.  The Matadors were led by Alfanso Martinez, who scored a career-high 26 points. Temple City will now meet Mayfair in second round action on Friday night.

Mayfair (Suburban #2)  49, Burroughs/Ridgecrest (Mojave River #2) 37-- Ridgecrest Burroughs came out in a zone defense  and the Monsoons took advantage as they downed the visiting Burros, 49-37, in a CIF Southern Section Division II-A first-round playoff Wednesday night.  The zone showed that Burroughs had clearly not scouted Mayfair, because if they had, they would have known that the perimeter game is Mayfair's strength.  Burroughs, 17-6 overall, probably regrets that decision now. Behind marksmen Jesus Miranda and Josh Childress and a solid defensive effort, the Monsoons turned an early 3-3 tie into a 19-5 lead just 1:40 into the second quarter. Miranda scored 14 of his game-high 21 points, including five 3-pointers, in the first half, and Childress, who finished with 16 points (three 3-pointers), had eight points in the first quarter. The Monsoons (21-6), Suburban League runners-up, used seven   second-quarter Burroughs turnovers to improve their lead to 29-11 at halftime.   A winner of eight in a row, Mayfair kept 6-foot-11 Burros center Rory O'Neil under wraps. The Monsoons made it difficult to get him the ball and when he did, he didn't get a good look at the basket. O'Neil, who came in averaging 17 points per game, finished with five points.  The second half proved to be a bit tougher for the young Monsoons, who were held to just nine points in the third quarter and 11 in the fourth quarter. While the Monsoons' lead was never in question, the Burros made a bit of a comeback, led by Levi Steinmetz, who scored a team-high 10
points, all in the second half. Mayfair will now meet Temple City on Friday night at a site to be determined by a coin flip this morning.

Dos Pueblos (Channel Islands #1) 78.  Mountain View (Mission Valley #3) 52-- While Shantay Legans (5'-10" Sr. PG) is the known commodity on the Dos Pueblos team, it was junior forward Brett Holbrook who led all scorers with 20 points as the Chargers disposed of an overmatched Mountain View team 78-52.  Legans, the Chargers' senior point guard and scoring leader, had a season low of seven points but he also had nine assists, most of them to Holbrook underneath. Legans, whose flashy moves to the basket are a staple of the Charger offense, seemed content to hover around the perimeter whipping passes to Holbrook and other players. He sat out the entire fourth quarter. At times, the Chargers looked impressive, such as when they jumped out to an 8-0 lead, or when they went on a 9-0 run to open a 26-10 lead in the second quarter. At other times, they appeared almost bored against a team with a 6-foot-2 junior at center and no other player taller than 6-foot. The taller Chargers had no trouble dominating the boards against Mountain View, led by 6-foot-5 forward Alex Jenkins. He had nine rebounds in the first half and 14 for the game to go with 17 points. Holbrook added seven boards and Alan Mount had six as Dos Pueblos outrebounded Mountain View 47-25. The Vikings, 10-14, were led by Mike Jaurez with 17 points and Rudy Caudillo with 16 - most on drives in the second half. Mountain View teetered constantly on the edge of disaster but doggedly stayed in the game by hitting a basket here and a basket there. In fact, except for a spate of missed layups in the first half, the Chargers might have been looking at a relatively close game. MOUNTAIN VIEW-Lee 7, Juarez 17, Vargas 1, Chong 6, Angulo 4, Cuadillo 16, Diaz 1. Totals 20-50 9-16 52. DOS PUEBLOS-Legans 7, Holbrook 20, Ortiz 9, Worzella 1, A. Jenkins 17, Mount 8, D. Jenkins 5, Dachenhaus 4, Ray 6. Totals 30-63 15-20 78. 3-point goals- Fouled out-none. Technical fouls-DP bench. Dos Pueblos will take on La Puente this Friday night at a location to be determined by a coin flip.

La Puente (Montview #1) 53,  Bellflower (Suburban #3) 50-- The Buccaneers (16-11) let a 48-40 lead with five minutes remaining in the game slip away and Marcus Harvey missed a wild three point attempt at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime as the Warriors (16-6) edged Bellflower in a first-round game at La Puente High. With the score tied at 50-50 with 32 seconds left, La Puente's Tofi Purcell stole the ball and passed it to Mark Salazar who went the length of the court for a lay-up to give the Warriors the lead for good. Salazar led La Puente with 17 points. Harvey paced Bellflower with 16 while Daron Botts added 12 in the loss. La Puente will meet Dos Pueblos in second round action on Friday.

Central Union (Imperial Valley #2) 69,  Victory Valley (Mojave River #3) 62 (OT)-- We were unable to get any details of this one, but will post them up if, as and when they ever trickle in from the nether reaches of the Imperial Valley. Friday in second round action Central Union will meet Santa Margarita, which had a bye last night as the top seeded team in the bracket.

Santa Margarita (Sea View #1)-- did not play because of a Bye
