CIF Southern Section Boys'
Division III-AA & IIIA Pairings--(Feb. 14, 1999)

We spent the entire morning down at Gahr High School as the CIF Southern Section playoff pairings and brackets were announced this morning.   While the crowd was still busy as the smaller brackets were announced, it had thinned out considerably when the pairings for Division III and IV were announced.   And as you'll see, there is a big question about whether there should be any division at all in Divison III into AA and A, because there are hardly enough teams to field a good tournament in IIIA.  Only 6 teams qualified outright for the eight team bracket in IIIAA.  So all you have to do is win three games and you can hang a banner.  There's gotta be a more competitive, better way.

Here are the pairings for each division. All of the first games will take place on Friday, February 19, 1999.  The Second Round will take place on February 23;  the Semifinals will take place on March 2, 1999, while the finals is at the Pond at Anaheim.

We don't have time to actually put up the bracketing right now, but we'll do it later.  In the meantime, if you use your imagination, you'll be able to picture it in each division.   In IIIAA, the top seeds in the Division are Bishop Montgomery,  (No. 1), San Dimas (#2), Gladstone (#3), and Alemany (#4).   Here are the first round pairings:

Division IIIAA

Bishop Montgomery (Del Rey #1) v. Pioneer (Del Rio #3)
Gabrielino (Mission Valley #2) v. South Hills (Valle Vista #3)
La Quinta/Westminster (Garden Grove #2) v. Pomon (Miramonte #3)
Gladstone (Montview #1) v. La Canada (Rio Hondo #3)

Alemany (Mission #1) v. Santa Paula (Fronteir #3)
Monrovia (Rio Hondo #2) v. Servite (Golden West #3)
Brawley (Imperial Valley #1) v. Chaparral (Skyline #3)
San Dimas (Valle Vista #1) v. Silver Valley (At Large)

And this is Division IIIA.  Again, only 6 teams qualified for an 8 team bracket, and Chaminade and Nordhoff are the top seeds.

Division IIIA

Chaminade (Mission #1) v. Estancia (At-Large)
Harvard Westlake (Mission #3) v. Morningside (Bay #4)
Nordhoff (Frontier #1) v. Northview (Valle Vista #4)
Banning (Skyline #1) v. Corona del Mar (At Large)

The home team is the first team listed.

No confusion, no controversy in this division.

In any event, all games are at  7:30 p.m. at the home school.  We'll have the actual bracketing up later, and more commentary and analysis.
