CIF Southern Section Boys'
Division II-AA Pairings--(Feb. 14, 1999)

We spent the entire morning down at Gahr High School as the CIF Southern Section playoff pairings and brackets were announced this morning.  The third bracket to be announced was Division II-A, and as you can imagine, the place was packed with coaches, administrators, coaches, and more coaches, all wondering what their first matchup would be.

Here are the pairings. All of the first games will take place on Friday, February 19, 1999.  The Second Round will take place on February 23;   the Semifinals will take place on March 2, 1999, while the finals is at the Pond at Anaheim.

We don't have time to actually put up the bracketing right now, but we'll do it later.  In the meantime, if you use your imagination, you'll be able to picture it.  The top seeds in the Division are Dominguez (No. 1), Redondo Union (#2), El Monte (#3), and Brea Olinda (#4).  Here are the first round pairings:

Division II-AA

Dominguez (San Gabriel Valley #1) v. Moorpark (At Large) (originally Royal --mistake, they're I-AA)
California (Del Rio #2) v. Garey (Miramonte #2)
Cathedral City (Desert Valley #1) v. Hemet (Sunkist #3)
Sonora (Freeway #1) v. El Dorado (Empire #3)
Savanna (Orange #2) v. Compton (Moore #3)
Newport Harbor (Sea View #2) v. Ramona (Sunkist #2)
Canyon Anaheim (Century #1) v. Trabuco Hills (At Large)
El Monte (Mission Valley #1) v. Rancho Verde (Sunbelt #3)

Brea Olinda (Orange #1) v. Los Amigos (Garden Grove #4)
West Torrance (Ocean #2) v. Buena Park (Freeway #2)
La Serna (Del Rio #1) v. Gahr (At Large)
Tustin (Golden West #2) v. Perris (Skyline #2)
Pasadena (Pacific #1) v. Torrance (Ocean #3)
Elsinore (Sunkist #1) v. Foothill (Century #3)
Burroughs/Burbank (Foothill #1) v. Paso Robles (At Large)
Redondo Union (Bay #2) v. Agoura (Marmonte #3)

The home team is the first team listed.

As we noted earlier, the big confusion in Division IIAA was when Russell Otis looked at his first game, which was with Royal, the No. 4 team in the Marmonte League.  At least it was until someone realized that Royal is a D-IA school, not in II-AA.  So instead, Moorpark, the No. 5 team in Marmonte League, was inserted against Dominguez as an "At-Large" entry, Royal was moved to D-IA, and given a wild card game against Loyola, and at large entry, the winner of which will face Mater Dei, and we're not sure who's going to be sorrier, Moorpark for having gotten in and drawn Dominguez, or Royal, which either gets to beat the Cubs only to face Mater Dei, or suffers the loss in the first round wild card.

In any event, all games are at  7:30 p.m. at the home school.  We'll have the actual bracketing up later, and more commentary and analysis.
