CIF Southern Section Boys'
Division I-A Pairings--(Feb. 14, 1999)
We spent the entire morning down at Gahr High School as the CIF Southern Section playoff pairings and brackets were announced this morning. The sedond bracket to be announced was Division I-A, and as you can imagine, the place was packed with coaches, administrators, coaches, and more coaches, all wondering what their first matchup would be.
Here are the pairings. All of the first games will take place on Friday, February 19, 1999. The Second Round will take place on February 23; the Semifinals will take place on March 2, 1999, while the finals is at the Pond at Anaheim.
We don't have time to actually put up the bracketing right now, but we'll do it later. In the meantime, if you use your imagination, you'll be able to picture it. The top seeds in the Division are Glendora (No. 1), Mater Dei (#2), Mira Costa (#3), and San Bernardino Pacific (#4). Here are the first round pairings:
Division I-A
Glendora (Baseline #1) v. Mission Viejo (At-large)
La Sierra (Mountain View #2) v. Crescenta Valley (Pacific #3)
Nogales (Sierra #1) v. Cajon (San Andreas #3)
Katella (Empire #2) v. Mark Keppel (Almont #2)
J.W. North (Ivy #1) v. Corona (Mountain View #3)
Santa Barbara (Channel #2) v. Hueneme (Pacific View #2)
Marina (Sunset #2) v. San Clemente (South Coast #3)
Pacific (San Andreas #1) v. Silverado (Mojave River #4)
Simi Valley (Marmonte #1) v. Saugus (Foothill #3)
Troy (Freeway #2) v. Claremont (Baseline #3)
Mira Costa (Ocean #1) v. Ventura (Channel #3)
Loara (Empire #1) v. riverside Poly (Ivy #3)
Moreno Valley (Ivy #2) v. Calexico (Imperial Valley #2)
University (Pacific Coast #1) v. La Mirada (Suburban #3)
Villa Park (Century #2) v. PalmSprings (Desert Valley #2)
Mater Dei (South Coast #1) v. Winner of Wild Card A (originally Loyola)
Wild Card Game A--Royal (Marmonte #4) v. Loyola--Wednesday, February 17 at Royal.
The home team is the first team listed.
The big confusion with this bracket, which required that it be redrawn this morning was when someone realized that Royal, which is a D-IA team had been matched up against Compton Dominguez in D-IIAA instead of the proper bracket. But in about a half hour, the error was fixed, and instead, Royal moved up to D-IA where they belonged, and was given a wild-card game with Loyola, a wild card team which finished fourth or fifth in Mission League, which had originally been scheduled to play Mater Dei.
In any event, all games are at 7:30 p.m. at the home school. We'll have the actual bracketing up later, and more commentary and analysis.
