CIF Southern Section Playoffs: Division V-AA
First Round Results--(Feb. 21, 1999)

This Division had first round games played Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Unbelievably, it's Sunday afternoon as we write this and we still don't have the results or details of at least one game, Yeshiva v. AGBU which was played last night.   But we do know the rest of the scores, and even have most of the details. Based on what we know, when Tuesday rolls around, you'll be seeing Poly v. Santa Maria Valley Chrisitian, Lone Pine v. Campbell Hall, Desert v. either Yeshiva or AGBU, Windward v. Calvary Chapel Downey, Pacific Hills v. Lucerne Valley, Valley Torah v. Upper Bracket

Pasadena Poly 61, Cate 20--Top-seeded Poly overwhelmed Cate in first round a Division V-AA game, as Matt Lawler hit for 11, Ryan Haden had 6, Marshall Duncan 7, Matt Easterlin 7, Chris roberts 2, Kirk Herald 9, Paul Haaga 1, and Koko Archibong who led all scorers with 18.  This complete mismatch is one of , if not the best exemple of why the CIF should not use league standings as the sole criteria for determining entitlement to play in the playoffs. Cate ends its season not a minute too soon, with a 7-11 overall record.  That's right, 7 wins. In this one, notwithstanding that Poly is the No. 1 seed, and was ranked consistently throughout the year as the No. 1 team in the division according to the SCIBCA poll, Cate just never got started:  Poly outscored them 22-2 in the first quarter, 20-9 in the second, 11-5 in the third, and 8-4 in the fourth when it was hopelessly over.

Santa Maria Valley Christian 44, Grace Brethren 38--These two teams had met previously this season in December at the Santa Maria Holiday Tournament, and while we don't remember the result (it's here somewhere;  if you really want to find it use the "search" thingee), Santa Maria was the better team. Neither of these teams really had a consistent offensive effort, with Grace Brethren scoring 11 in the first quarter but then only scoring 9 points in each of the next three quarters, while Valley Christian wasn't exactly lighting it up either, managing double figures in only the second (14) and the fourth 15).  Grace Brethren was also either without it's leading scorer Robert Serra (5'-10" Jr. SG) or he just didn't score, because he didn't show up in the box.  Without Serra, McLain had 10, and 12 rebounds, Jackson Beauchamp had 17 and 8 rebounds, Durso had 8 and Bordeleau had 8.  For VC, the leading scorer was David Carnell with 12, Luke Caywood with 11, and Erin Ophaue with 10.  Not to be too cynical about it, Valley Christian now gets the pleasure of saying they're about to get beaten by the No. 1 team in the Division, Pasadena Poly.  The second round game will be held on Tuesday at a location to be determined by a coin flip. Grace Brethren ends its season with a 15-8 overall record.

Lone Pine 84, Riverside Christian 68--Lone Pine (18-6) capitalized on its size advantage to build an eight-point halftime lead and held off Riverside Christian (13-4) in a Division V-AA game. Riverside Christian got as close as six in the fourth quarter, but it committed three consecutive turnovers as Lone Pine pulled away. Senior forward Nick Paige scored a season-high 35 points, hitting six three-pointers, for Riverside Christian. Paige scored 10 points in the third quarter. RIVERSIDE CHRISTIAN (68) -- Fernandez 17, Paige 35, Harrison 2, Falk 5, Harris 9. LONE PINE (84) -- Vasquez 23, McDonnough 2, Cervantes 16, Corona 19, Steel 18, Lutze 4, Harry 2. Halftime score -- Lone Pine 39-31. Three-point goals -- Paige 6, Falk, Vasquez 5. Total fouls -- Riverside Christian 12, Lone Pine 13. Fouled out -- Harris.

Mesa Grande 51, Campbell Hall 75-- Campbell Hall jumped out to a 20-7 first quarter lead and never looked back as they improved to 19-9 overall and will play Lone Pine in the Second Round game this Tuesday, at a site to be determined, and we're betting that somebody is going to be doing some major travel because Lone Pine's one heck of a long way from North Hollywood.  Campbell Hall was led by Jesse Foster (6'-7" Jr. C/F) with 16 and Josh Levy (6'-4" Sr. SG) with 17 and 10 rebounds, while Hassan Bassiri added another 10 and 10 assists. Greg Drobnick also poured in 18 points and had 8 assists. Others scoring for Campbelll Hall were Womack with 9, Klippsten 1, Kerr 2 and Kaplan 2.  Mesa Grande, which closes out it's season, was led by Lloyd with 23, and Stout with 12.

Whitewater 46, .Desert 73--No details, just a score. If anyone out there has a box or stats, or can provide a small narrative about what happened, send it in.  Desert will now face the winner of the Yeshiva v. AGBU game which was played Saturday night, evidently so late, that not even the CIF has their score yet as of Sunday morning.

Yeshiva v. AGBU-- Unbelievably, it's about 2:00 p.m. on Sunday and we still have no idea who won this game.  We've tried every paper and sportswriter we know, and we've also tried calling around to various Liberty League (Yeshiva's league) coaches to see if anyone knows who won this game, but everyone must be at the UCLA game. Eventually we'll find out.  If anyone knows, send the results in, and also notify the CIF Southern Section office, because apparently, they don't know either.

Windward 67, CSDR 50--California School of the Deaf, Riverside (15-12) failed to advance past the first round for the third consecutive season, losing to Los Angeles Windward (18-7) in a Division V-AA playoff game at Sherman Indian High. Jeremiah Valencia had 26 points and Joshua Valencia added 11 for the Cubs. "Windward dominated the game from start to finish and totally outplayed the Cubs," said CSDR coach Jimmy Newsome. "The Cubs made an attempt to get back in the game, but a disciplined and patient Wildcat team kept us at bay." The Cubs were 7-1 in the Arrowhead League.
WINDWARD (67) -- Bright 19, Leeb 18, Page 15, Cane 9, Hirsch 6. CSDR (50) -- Jere.Valencia 26, Jos.Valencia 11, Jon.Valencia 5, Jai.Valencia 4, Bayarsky 2, Nguyen 2. Halftime score -- Windward 28-22. Three-point goals -- Jere.Valencia 2, Leeb 4, Hirsch 2, Cane. Total fouls -- Windward 10, CSDR 12. Fouled out -- None. Technical fouls -- None.

Downey Calvary Chapel 91, Sherman Indian 53 --Highlights: Riverside Sherman Indian (8-12) stayed close in the first quarter, trailing 19-11, but Downey Calvary Chapel (23-4) outscored the Braves 27-6 in the second quarter. Slater Nez led the Braves with 19 points, and Isaac Keo had 14 points. SHERMAN INDIAN (53) -- Keo 14, Nex 19, Polk 8, Wahwasuck 0, Polequaptewa 3, Moses 2, Key 2, Van Fleet 5. CALVARY CHAPEL (91) -- McInis 23, Wade 17, Slater 10, Drisdom 17, Banbelos 5, Hannan 3, Fitzgerald 2, James 2, Hancock 4, Pilon 8. Halftime score -- Calvary Chapel 46-17. Three-point goals -- Keo 2, Nez 3, Polk 2, Polequaptewa, McInis 3, Wade, Hannan. Total fouls -- Sherman Indian 15, Calvary Chapel 10. Fouled out -- none.

Lower Bracket

Pacific Hills 96, Glendale Adventist 34--This game was played last night (Saturday) and to no one's great surprise, Pacific Hills kicked Glendale's behinds, winning by 62 points.  One of our regular readers, and a Pacific Hills fan, Steve Herbert, wrote up a small report: "The defending Division V state champion Bruins opened the Southern Section playoffs with an even larger rout over the Cougars than it did in last year's playoff opener which was a "mere" 104-47 victory. Pacific Hills (21-6) wrapped this one up in the first quarter, outscoring Glendale Academy 26-2 in the first eight minutes, including the final 19 points of the quarter. Six-foot-3 senior guard/forward Ryan Abrahams scored 15 of his game-high 25 in the first quarter. Three teammates finished in double figures--junior guard Anthony Kyles who had 13 off the bench, including three three-pointers; six-foot-5 sophomore forward Amani Daanish with 10 and senior guard Gary White, also with 10. Cyrus Gupilan led the Cougars (12-8) with nine, including two threes. The game was played at Brentwood School, because Pacific Hills' usual home court, Daniel Murphy High, was not available. This game was played on a Saturday, instead of the customary Friday because Glendale Academy's Seventh Day Adventist beliefs do not allow it to play games on Friday nights." Steve also sent in a box, with the complete scoring for the game: Glendale Academy--Gorospe 5; Tampi 6; Iskander 4; Hinkle 6; Boulin 4; Gupilan 9. Pacific Hills--Joshua 10; Abrahams 25; Daanish 10; Wade 7; White 10; Davis 5; Amedu 2; Bali 2; Lewis 2; Kyles 13; Cole 6; Jaffe 4. Three-point baskets--Kyles 3; Gupilan 2; Hinkle 2; Gorospe 1. We also want to thank Rich Makoff who alerted us to the scoring as well.  Pacific Hills will now get to play their next victim, Valley Christian Santa Maria, and unless Santa Maria has improved dramatically since we last saw them in December at their own  tournament, they're in for a bumpy ride.  The site of the game will be determined by a coin toss.

Lucerne Valley 69, Apple Valley Christian 51--no details were available for this game. We're still looking, and if anyone actually knows what happened, let us in on it by e-mailing the details.

Valley Torah 52, La Sierra Academy 44-- This game was played Saturday night rather than Friday night, at Montclair Prep, and Valley  Torah managed to pul ahead in the fourth quarter.  The Wolfpack (19-2) jumped out to a slim 17-14 first quarter lead but then both teams stalled as Valley only scored 8 and La Sierra only scored 7 in the second quarter, but it was enough for VT to take a 25-21 lead at the half.  La Sierra managed to close to within 2 points, outscoring VT 10-8 in the third, but then Valley pulled ahead for good outscoring La Sierra 19-13 in the fourth for the win. Abey Malkin had 11 points and 7 steals for the Wolfpack, and Tzvi Wachsman added 14 points and 21 rebounds, while the official box also says Simkin had 6 points and 10 rebounds.  Ed Gerov scored 16 points while Ishakov had 2.  La Sierra which ends its season at 11-9 was led by Dabelleh with 24 points and 18 boards, while Patarsen had 12 points and 14 rebounds.  Valley Torah will meet St. Anthony's this coming Tuesday in the Second Round at a site to be determined.

St. Anthony 77, Western Christian 54--Junior forward Jared Lloyd scored 19 points and junior forward Pearson Smith had 14 as the Saints (21-6) defeated the Fightning Lancers (12-12) in a first round game at St. Anthony High. St. Anthony came out with a full-court press that smothered Western Christian throughout the entire first half. The Saints led, 46-22, at halftime and never looked back. The Saints will now play the winner of Valley Torah/La Sierra Academy game on Tuesday in the second round.

Chadwick 90, Thacher 53--No details, no box. If anyone has the official scoring and stats, send them in. Chadwick will play Milken in the Second Round on Tuesday, February 23 at a location to be determined by a coin flip.

Milken 55, Capistrano Valley Christian 45--Click the link for the prior review of this game, which was played Thursday.  Milken advances and will now meet Chadwick in the Second Round on Tuesday at a site to be determined by a coin flip.

Faith Baptist 55, Bloomington Christian 54--Faith Baptist trailed in this one early 17-14 at the end of the first quarter, but then outscored Bloomington 15-9 in the second to take a 29-26 lead into the locker room.   Stefan Grasu (6'-7" Sr. F/C) had 12 points and 8 rebounds,, well off his season average, but it was still enough to help Faith Baptist to the win. In the second half, both teams had identical scoring in the third and fourth quarters (Bloomington with 14, FB with 13 in each quarter). For Faith Baptist which improved to 18-7 overall, Lonnie Clayton scored 5, Johnson 9, Jeremy Lopez had 19 Melendez 2, Bautista 1, and Samuel 4.   Bloomington Christian ends its season at 16-6, and was led by Mike Martin with 22 and Tevon Coleman with 14.  Other BC scorers were Jordan 3, Procter 5, Sterns 5 and Rollins 5.  We're not sure whether Faith Baptist is feeling lucky or not, but they'll need more than just luck on Tuesday as they face Santa Clara in the Second Round game at a site to be determined.

Santa Clara 70, Holy Martyrs 37-- Employing its usual suffocating press and fast breaking style of play from their two Division I recruits Nick Jones and B.J. Ward, Santa Clara demolished the Armens at Santa Clara on Friday night.   Nick Jones scored 12 and B.J. Ward had 18.  Santa Clara jumped out to a 15-5 first quarter lead and then managed to hold Holy Martyrs to single digits for the next two quarters, outscoring them 11-7 in the second quarter and 19-8 in the third.  While Holy Martyrs tried a frantic comeback in the fourth quarter, behind the shooting of Schant Choulakian (6'-1" Sr. C) who finished with 17 points, it was clearly not enough as Santa Clara put an end to the season for Holy Martyrs.  Others scoring for Santa Clara were M. Angell with 6, Camper with 5, Dotsy 7, Post 4, Madrigal 6, J. Angell 7, Castaniero 1, and Ramirez.  For Holy Martyrs the complete scoring was Barsamian 5, Choulakian 17, Rostamian 8, Vukmajian 5, and Khatchadourian 2.  Santa Clara now advances to the second round where they will meet their next victim, Faith Baptist at a site to be determined.
