CIF Southern Section Playoffs:
Division V-A
Second Round Results--(Feb. 21, 1999)
First there were 32, then 16, now just 8. Friday's games were second round games, since the first round was played last Wednesday. We have all the results, but the details are few and far between. The quarterfinal games which will be played this Tuesday, February 23 at "Alternate Sites" i.e., neither team's home court, will feature Price v. Orangewood Academy, Heritage Christian v. West LA Baptist, Laguna Blanca v. Rio Hondo Prep, and Pilgrim v. Antelope Valley Christian. And if things continue to go according to plan, on March 5, you'll be seeing No. 1 Price playing No. 2 Antelope Valley Christian, which should be one heck of a game.
Here's a summary followed by the details we've been able to compile.
Upper Bracket
Price 73, Shandon 31
Orangewood Academy 68, Immaculate Christian 53
Heritage Christian 64, Granada Hills Hillcrest Christian 45
West LA Baptist 62, Rolling Hills Prep 61
Lower Bracket
Laguna Blanca 72, Santa Clarita Christian 48
Rio Hondo Prep 47, Desert Christian 41
Pilgrim 50, Pioneer Baptist 48
Southwestern Academy 70, Antelope Valley Christian 75
Upper Bracket
Price 73, Shandon 31-- Price, the No. 1 seed in the division easily beat Shandon, which had earlier beaten New Roads last Wednesday night. Price will now play Orangewood Academy. The site of the game will be determined by a coin flip today.
Orangewood Academy 68, Immaculate Christian 53--
Starly Alvarado scored a game-high 29 points to lead the visiting Spartans (19-8).
Orangewood advanced and will now play Price which beat Shandon easily.
Heritage Christian 64, Granada Hills Hillcrest Christian 45-- Matt Winter scored 22
points, and Matt Williams added nine points and 17 rebounds to lead the host Patriots
(16-9).Heritage Christian led Hillcrest Christian 35-23 at the half. Freshman David Grace
had 13 points, including three three-pointers, for host Heritage Christian. Heritage
Christian advanced to play West L.A. Baptist which upset Rolling Hills Prep
West LA Baptist 62, Rolling Hills Prep 61--This was a huge upset, and not surprisingly, none of the local papers covered it or had a box, probably because no one thought in their wildest dreams that Rolling Hills Prep would lose. But lose they did, and now West LA Baptist, which finished No. 3 in Westside League, will play Heritage Christian in the Quarterfinal round
Lower Bracket
Laguna Blanca 72, Santa Clarita Christian 48--Garrett
Wilson scored 14 of his 18 points in the first half and Chris Tamas had his usual
double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds as Laguna Blanca advanced to the third round
of the Division V-A playoffs win the victory at Hart High. Laguna, 21-5, is seeded No. 3
in the tournament but got a scare in the first round, edging North County Christian 62-60.
The Owls will play Rio Hondo Prep Wednesday.
LAGUNA BLANCA- Scott 10, Wilson 18, Tamas 23, Ferguson 9, Niehaus 12. Totals 31 5-9 72.
SANTA CLARITA-Duncan 19, Brewer 13, Buchman 2, Derr 14. Totals 16 9-11 48. 3-point
goals-LB 5 (Ferguson 3, Wilson 2), SC 7 (Brewer 3, Duncan 2, Derr 2). Total fouls-LB 13,
SC 11. Fouled out-none.
Rio Hondo Prep 47, Desert Christian 41 -- After a poor start, Bermuda Dunes Desert Christian (18-6) outplayed Arcadia Rio Hondo Prep (13-8) in the final three quarters, but it lost a Division 5A second-round road game. "I felt we would get to the finals, but we knew this would be a tough test," Desert Christian coach Don Curci said. "They came out a little harder than we anticipated, and we were too timid." Rio Hondo Prep opened up a 17-5 first-quarter lead, but it made only four field goals in the entire half. Rio Hondo Prep made 13 of 15 three-point attempts in the game, however. Thomas Vizcarra had 16 points and Tim Smith had 10 points -- all in the fourth quarter for Desert Christian. DESERT CHRISTIAN (41) -- Vizcarra 16, Smith 10, Brattrud 9, Johnson 4, O'Brien 2. RIO HONDO PREP (47) -- Blake 17, Dinius 14, De Leon 6, Amann 6, Tashkesen 2, Ramos 2. Halftime score -- Rio Hondo Prep 26-21. Three-point goals -- Blake 3, Amann, Brattrud 3. Total fouls -- Desert Christian 14, Rio Hondo Prep 11. Fouled out -- Johnson.
Pilgrim 50, Pioneer Baptist 48--We didn't get the details because none of the local papers printed a box or any story about the game. We know that there are some pretty rabid Pilgrim fans out there who have details of what happened in the game, and what we're likely to see with Pilgrim v. Antelope Valley Christian on Tuesday, so if you know, send us an e-mail with the details. Tuesday's game will be played at an "alternate site" to be announced.
Southwestern Academy 70, Antelope Valley Christian 75--We've
only seen AVC playing as a group of kids last fall at the ARC Fall League tournament, and
they were impressive, playing with D-II, III and IV teams and more than holding their own.
They feature some great shooters, rebounders, and play tenacious defense and a
quick offense, and while we don't think they'd be putting up numbers as impressive as they
have against tougher and bigger opponents, against teams in their own division, they are
doing extremely well. Matthew Nurse hit for 12 points and had 10 assists and 6 steals,
Jamal Flanagan had 13 points and 15 rebounds, Peter Beaudin had a team-high 26 points, 19
rebounds and 5 steals, while O. Flanagan had 5, Hannah 3, and John Cho 14 and 15 rebounds.
Pretty impressive individual and team numbers, balanced scoring and good rebounding.
Southwestern came out smoking in this one, leading 21-13 at the end of the first
quarter, but then AVC went to work and they outscored Southwestern 24-6 in the second to
take a 37-27 lead into the locker room at the half. In the third quarter, AVC stretched
the lead to 11, outscoring SWA 16-15, and even though Southwestern make a run and
"winning" the fourth quarter 26-22, largely behind the shooting of Kevaughn
Bullock, who had 31 points, and David Escobar, who had 25, it was too little too
late. AVC improved to 19-2 while SWA closes the season at 14-9. AVC will now play
Pilgrim at a location to be determined.
