CIF Southern Section Playoffs:
Division IV-A
First Round Results--(Feb. 21, 1999)
Not a lot to say about this bracket. One game still remained to be played on Saturday night, Mojave v. Loma Linda, but otherwise the bracket is completed through the first round. Not surprisingly, Verbum Dei just demolished Brentwood, which got an at-large berth despite finishing behind Pacific Hills, Crossroads, and Campbell Hall in Delphic League play. Based on these results, Verbum Dei will play Orange Lutheran on Tuesday, February 23 in the Quarterfinals; Calvary Chapel Santa Ana will play the winner of Mojave v. Loma Linda. In the lower half of the division, Santa Maria St. Joe's will play Maranatha, and St. Monica's will play No. 2 seed Crossroads. Here's a summary and the details we were able to get.

Upper Bracket
Verbum Dei 72, Brentwood 31 --Marlon Parmer scored 26 points and had 10 assists as the defending-champion Eagles won their IV-A opener at Verbum Dei.
Orange Lutheran 64, St. Bonaventure 42-- Jason Whieldon scored 19 points, 10 assists, and grabbed 16 rebounds, and Pat Salyer added 16 points including 11 in the second half and 10 rebounds to lead the visiting Lancers (15-10). Orange Lutheran opened the game with an 8-0 run and never trailed. It will play Verbum Dei on Tuesday in the second round.
Calvary Chapel 70, Riverside Notre Dame 42--
Brett Young scored a game-high 33 points including four three-pointers and
grabbed 15 rebounds, and Joshua Sherman added 17 points to lead the Eagles (18-9) at home.
Calvary Chapel outscored Notre Dame in the fourth quarter, 25-4.
Calvary Chapel will play the winner of tonight's Mohave-Loma Linda game Tuesday in the
second round.
Mojave v. Loma Linda--This game was scheduled to be played Saturday night at 8:15 p.m.
Lower Bracket
Santa Maria St. Joseph 73, Boys Republic 49--Chris Merlo had 15 points and eight rebounds and Matt Cova had 12 points and eight assists as St. Joseph, 19-7, advanced to the second round of the Division IV-A playoffs. Mike Draper added 11 points. Boys Republic got off to a slow start, trailing by 21 points at the half. Darrell White led the host Rams with 10 points and eight rebounds, and Dwayne Pierson had nine points and six rebounds.
Maranatha 59, LA Baptist 56--Maranatha had four players in double figures, including Paul Mason who scored 16, and David Newkirk with 13, Eric Sorenson 10, and Bryan Pistole with 11, and Ben Hamady, the only other scorer just barely missed hitting two digits with 9 ponts. Maranatha trailed by two at the end of the first quarter, 16-14, but then managed to hold LA Baptist to just 7 points in the second quarter to take a 29-21 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Maranatha outscored LA Baptist 10-8 and then both teams frantically tried to score in the fourth combining for 36 points, but it was Maranatha's 20 in the quarter that sealed the win. LA Babtist was led by Regenstreif with 13 and Frazier with 10, and finishes the season with a record of 9-15. Maranatha, at 18-6, moves on to the Quarterfinal Round where they will meet St. Joseph on Tuesday, February 23 at a site to be determined.
St. Monica 57, Providence 53-- Derek Jones scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Appollo Kascinta had 19 and Gino Pedraja finished with 11. St. Monica's was led by Potts with 13, Shelby 13, and Yarber with 11. Providence trailed by only two at the end of the first quarter, 19-17, but then went stone cold, as St Monica's outscored them 15-9 in the second to take a 34-26 lead at the half. But then Providence came out in the third, and held St. Monica to just five points while scoring 11 and at the end of three, the score was 37-34 Providence. The fourth quarter was a frantic scoring rush for both teams, as St. Monica scored 18 and Providence 16 to give St. Monica's the first round win. Providence, which finished tied for first in Liberty League with Windward, closes out the year with a record of 16-7, while St. Monica's at 13-13 moves on to the Quarterfinal round on Tuesday, when they will play Crossroads at an Alternative Site to be determined.
Crossroads 58, Whittier Christian 51--Jon Stoa scored 24 points including two three-pointers and Matt Martinez added 15, but the Heralds (14-13) lost on the road. Felipe Williams scored 19 points to lead Crossroads (18-8). Crossroads led Whiitier Christian 30-20 at the half. Devrin Anderson added 12 for Crossroads while Mischa Taylor scored 3, Gordon 9, and Locke 1. Crossroads never trailed, jumping out to a 10-7 first quarter lead, and extending it by seven as they outscored Whittier 20-13 in the second to lead at the half 30-20. In the third quarter, Crossroads had some difficulty, as Whittier held them to just 9 points, and cut the lead to just 6, and while both teams played nearly even in the fourth, Crossroads still managed to outscore Whittier 19-17 to hang on for the win. Crossroads will play St. Monica in a quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday at an Alternative Site to be determined.
