CIF Southern Section Playoffs:
Division IV-AA
First Round Results--(Feb. 21, 1999)
Only about half the favorites won in this division. Here's a quick summary and the rest of the details. The weirdest thing to ever happen that we can remember in a playoff game occurred in this division on Friday night when Oak Park, which had traveled all the way from Agoura to Laguna Beach (probably leaving sometime around 2:00 p.m. just because of weekend traffic, and considering that the best but most heavily traveled route to Laguna Beach is the 405)arrived at Laguna Beach High School for their first round game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Both teams got ready to play, only to be wait, and wait and wait. Seems the referees just didn't show up. So the game was rescheduled for Saturday night, presumably when a lot of high school refs have nothing better to do. Unbelievable. Could it have had something to do with the fact that Laguna Beach wouldn't have been at full strength, missing Kurt Beimfohr and Austin Butters, both out with the flu? Nah. Mere coincidence. And no word on whether Oak Park decided to check in to a hotel nearby or whether they decided to make the drive yet again on Saturday. Anyway, here are the rest of the results

Upper Bracket
Laguna Beach v. Oak Park--Laguna Beach's boys basketball team will have to wait another day to pursue its quest of a CIF title because the referees didn't show up Friday night. The Artists (19-6), ranked No. 1 in Division IV-AA in the SCIBCA Poll, will play host to Oak Park in a rescheduled first-round game tonight at 7:30 at Laguna Beach High. "It's frustrating. We came to play tonight," Laguna Beach captain Kurt Beimfohr said. "This was what we were preparing for." Beimfohr tried to see the positive side. Both he and teammate Austin Butters were sick, so the delay gave them another day to recuperate.
Serra 57, Morro Bay 49-- Serra High dared Morro Bay
on Friday to hit the three-point shot. The Cavaliers dared the Pirates over and over
again. Morro Bay's big shots didn't come as it fell to Serra 57-49 in a first-round
boys basketball playoff game. Morro Bay, a Los Padres League co-champion, leaves the
CIF-Southern Section Division IV-AA playoffs sooner that it would have liked. The
Pirates finish the year 16-8. Morro Bay's struggles started in the third quarter
when Serra went to a zone defense. After Serra took a 38-37 lead with 2:16 to play
in the third quarter, the Cavaliers held relatively slim leads the rest of the way.
Morro Bay's Matt Epperheimer had 15 points and Cam Smith finished with 14.
Ryan Gray was held to a
season-low three points. Though Serra, at 16-12, advances to the quarterfinals of
Division IV-AA.
St. Paul 69, Beaumont 56--Brandon Tedrow scored 20 points, but it wasn't enough as Santa Fe Springs St. Paul defeated Beaumont in a Division IV-AA game. Aaron Stephens and Adam Stephens each added 14 for the Cougars. Beaumont jumped out to a 9-0 lead, but the Swordsmen outscored the Cougars 18-11 to take the lead for good at halftime, 33-28. Beaumont cut the lead to five at 56-51 with three minutes remaining but was forced to foul. St. Paul outscored Beaumont 13-5 to end the game. ST. PAUL (69) -- Holloway 22, Landrum 10, Martinez 13, Villegas 8, Goosby 8, Cornijo 8 BEAUMONT (56) -- Ad. Stephens 14, Cohn 6, Tedrow 20, Aa. Stephens 12, Nunez 4 Halftime score -- St. Paul 33-28. Three-point goals -- Holloway 3, Martinez 2, Ad. Stephens 2, Tedrow 3, Aa. Stephens. Total fouls -- St. Paul 14, Beaumont 17. Fouled out -- Aa. Stephens. Technical fouls -- Mendoza (B).
Marshall 68, Cathedral 59--Marshall, trailing by one heading into the fourth quarter, managed to keep its cool, outscoring the Phantoms 11-5 over the last five minutes of the game, scoring a 68-59 first round win. Chris Bennett (6'-8" Sr. PF/C) faced double and triple-teaming but still managed to score 12 points, 6 of which came durig tghe crucial run late in the game. The aggressive pressure in the paint by the Phantoms also left Marshall shooters open from behind the arc, and the Eagles responded with 7 three-pointers in the game. Cathedral had battled back from a 10 point deficit at the half to make it close in the third quarter, and Cathedral made several adjustments to their zone and came out strong in the third quarter. Marshall also happened to go cold in the third was well, hitting only 3 for 9 from the field. Cathedral outscored Marshall 19-8 in th ethird, quarter, and Earvin Johnson's basket as time expired in the quarter game Cathedral the lead for the first time since early in the first half. Cathedral center Julian Nava (any relation to the former LAUSD head?) scored 16 points to lead the Phantoms who end their season with a 13-14 record. Marshall will now face St. Paul in the quarterfinal round on February 23, which will be played at an alternate site to be determined. Marshall is now 20-6.
Lower Bracket
Twentynine Palms 61, Rosamond 51--Twentynine Palms
survived early foul trouble to defeat Rosamond in a first-round Division IV-AA game.
Starters Maurice Buchanan, Vili Morton and Mitch Harkley each had three fouls a minute
into the second quarter, but "our subs played pretty tough for us," said
Wildcats coach Ralph Wright. Buchanan finished with 22 points, and Morton had 10.

Paraclete 73, La Salle 71-- La Salle scored 11 three point baskets, but it wasn't enough and they fell to Paraclete in the home loss in the opening round of play in Division IV-AA playoffs. Tommy Remmilard scored 12 points, including three 3's, Jason Kenoyer had 18 (4 three-pointers), Albert Aquino 15 (3 three-pointers), Joe Williams had 10, Kelsey Foster 11 (one three), and Brain Brisbin 5. La Salled jumped out to a 21-15 lead in the first quarter, and then padded it by scoring 22 points to Paraclete's 20 in the second for the 43-35 halftime lead. But in the third quarter, Paraclete came out on fire, largely behind the shooting of Jones and Fockhaert who finished with 25 and 15 respectively, and outscored La Salle 21-11. While both teams scored 17 points in the frantic finish, it wasn't enough for La Salle, who was also hurt by Aquino fouling out. Paraclete moves on with the win to the quarterfinal game with Twentynine Palms next Tuesday at an alternate site to be determined. La Salle's season ends at 20-6, while Paraclete is now 11-14.
Carpinteria 61, Daniel Murphy 59 --John Barbieri scored 38 points - despite getting sick at halftime - and Carpinteria High survived a flurry of shots in the final seconds to pull out a 61-59 win over visiting Daniel Murphy in a first round CIF Division IV-AA basketball game Friday night. The Warriors, 13-11, will play at Crespi Wednesday. Barbieri scored 18 of his points in the second quarter as Carpinteria took a 34-23 lead. He had 22 points at intermission but he also had something else - a bug in his stomach. Murphy took advantage, closing within a basket midway into the third period and staying close - but never leading - through the remainder of the game. With the Warriors leading 61-59, Murphy forced a turnover with 10 seconds to play and went downcourt looking to tie. Tyler Matson had 18 rebounds to go with nine points for Carpinteria, while Ben Scott had six assists, seven rebounds and seven points. MURPHY-Singleterry 17, Heim 12, Owens 12, Jackson 6, Urena 5, Walker 4, Dawson 3. Totals 25 6-18 59. CARPINTERIA-Barbieri 38, Matson 9, Scott 7, Lopez 4, Gonzales 2, Nuno 1. Crespi 71, Duarte 52--Blake Tibbetts scored eight in the third quarter and Pat Dornan scored five in the third quarter, when the Celts (18-8) stretched a three-point lead to 16 points at Duarte. Dornan, Tibbets and Tim McDonough all ended with 13 in the game, while Marcin Jagoda had 7, Moore had 9, Luderer 8, Guenther 2, Cassella 3 and Shiebler 1. Duarte was led by Green with 19. Duarte ends it's season at 15-11 overall. Crespi advances and will play Carpinteria in the Quarterfinal round on February 23 at a site to be determined. The Celts jumped out to an early 18-10 lead at the end of the third quarter, but the half, Duarte had come back to close the gap to 29-26 Crespi. But then in the third quarter, Crespi outscored Duarte 23-13 and 19-13 in the fourth to seal the win.
