CIF Southern Section Playoffs: Division II-A
Second Round Results--(Feb. 20, 1999)

That's right, this was the second round, just like it was in Division V-A, and in both divisions, the quarterfinals will be held on Wednesday, February 23 at Alternate Sites. Based on the results from last night, Inglewood will meet Lompoc, Ocean View will Play Pacifica, Muir will play Mayfair, and Dos Pueblos will play the defending State Champs in Division II, Santa Margarita.

Here are the details of what happened:

Upper Bracket

Inglewood 71,  Los Altos 38 -- Sandy Fletcher had 15 points and Marvin Isaacs added 11 to lead the top-seeded Sentinels to a second-round II-A victory. In a playoff game that resembled more of a slam dunk contest, Inglewood's boys basketball team won hands down. The top-seeded Sentinels showcased their athletic ability with an array of dunks, blocks, no-look passes and up-tempo play to blow by Los Altos 71-38 in a CIF Division II-A second-round game Friday night at Inglewood. Sandy Fletcher led Inglewood with a team-high 15 points, including three three-pointers. Skip Esene added 11 points, including two dunks, for the Sentinels. He capped the third quarter with a reverse dunk as time expired. Marvin Isaacs scored all 11 of his points in the first half to help the Sentinels build a 23-7 first quarter lead and a 38-12 halftime lead.Noel Felix had six points, five blocks and two dunks. Teddy Fletcher scored seven points for Inglewood. Felix, Lenny Brown and Gerrod Jenkins each added six points. Los Altos was led by Bobby Godinez, who scored a game-high 25 points, including four three-pointers. Godinez scored two-thirds of Los Altos' 38 points, 26 of which came in the second half as after the game was already decided.Inglewood now will face Lompoc in a Quarterfinal game on Tuesday at a nuetral site to be determined. Earlier, in the first round, Inglewood did not play, receiving a bye.

Lompoc 77, Newbury Park 73 (OT) -- Lompoc (No. 1 in the Northern League) got to this game by defeating Charter Oak, an at-large team in the first round, while Newbury Park got to this second round game by defeating Sierra Vista, the Valle Vista League's No. 2 team. Anthony Foli hit a three-point shot for Newbury Park to send the game into overtime, but Lompoc scored the first four points in the extra period and the Panthers (19-6) couldn't catch up.  Newbury Park had five players who scored in double figures, including a team-high 16 by Will Svitek, but Lompoc converted 26 of 35 free throws while Newbury Park was five of nine from the line. The Braves will meet top-seeded Inglewood in the quarter final round on Tuesday.  The site wil be determined by a coin flip, and must, under Southern Section rules, be an alternate site (i.e., one where neither team has either played or practiced).

Ocean View 75, Barstow 69--This was a rematch of last season's Division III-AA championship game. Barstow came within two late in the game, but couldn't get any closer.All-Orange County guard Tony Dow had one of the more productive nights of his senior season, scoring 23 points with seven assists to guide the Seahawks (24-5) to the home victory over the Aztecs (21-6). Ocean View had previously defeated La Habra, an At-Large team in the first round, while Barstow had defeated Palm Desert in the first round.  Ocean View will now matchup in a quarterfinal game on Tuesday, February 23 against Pacifica, which beat Atascadero.  The game will take place at an Alternate Site, which means it's not held on either team's home floor. 

Pacifica 68, Atascadero 52-- The Mariners made eight three-pointers, sending the Greyhounds out of the Division II-A playoffs.   Fourth-seeded Pacifica ( 26-1 ) wasn't the tallest of teams, but what it did, it did well.   Atascadero's Jonathan Bentley had 18 points, while teammate Chris Donovan finished with 14. Donovan made four three-pointers.  After Pacifica opened a big lead in the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds were not able to get any closer than 11 points. Atascadero, 18-7 this season, was hurt by foul trouble. The Greyhounds committed 26 fouls, and had John Tamelier and Jaysen McKinney foul out. The Mariners led by eight at the end of the first quarter, trailed by one at halftime and had a strong second half to win at home in the second round. Adam Rachlin paced Pacifica with 18 points. 

Lower Bracket

Muir 73, Laguna Hills 54--Muir got to this second round game by beating Magnolia, an at-large team in the first round, while Laguna Hills had beaten Valencia (Placentia) February 17.  Last night, Darelle Rowe scored 19 points and Jeff Washington added 16 to lead the Mustangs to the II-A victory. Jeff Eittreim scored 26 points in a losing cause as the Hawks (16-11) were eliminated.   Muir will now face

Mayfair 67, Temple City 40-- The Monsoons (22-6) used a 19-6 first quarter and 23 points and seven rebounds from Josh Childress in a second-round victory over the Rams (18-8) at Mayfair High. Senior guard Jesus Miranda also had 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists for Mayfair who will play Muir, who defeated Laguna Hills, on Tuesday in the quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. at a site yet to be determined. Junior forward Jeff Bonds also had 13 points and eight rebounds in the win.

Dos Pueblos 72, La Puente 58--The Chargers advanced to the third round of the Division II-A playoffs with a win on the road. Dos Pueblos will face second seeded Santa Margarita Wednesday at a site to be decided by coin flip. The Chargers are 22-7. No details of the game were available.

Santa Margarita 59, Central Union 45-- Spencer Gloger had 27 points and seven rebounds to pace the Eagles (25-2) to the second-round victory. Kelly Kramer had 11 points and 11 rebounds for Santa Margarita.  Santa Margarita, the defending State Champions in Division II, now advance to meet Dos Pueblos at a site yet to be determined.
