Dominguez 98, Westlake 46--Jake DeGennaro scored 22 points for visiting Westlake (11-16), which was overmatched by the nation's No. 9-ranked team at Dominguez.  Center Tyson Chandler had nine dunks and scored 19 points for top-seeded Dominguez (24-3).  Senior point guard Marcus Moore had 17 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds to record his first triple-double of the season as the Dons (23-3) rolled past the Warriors in a first-round game at Dominguez High. Dominguez  broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Westlake 26-8. Sophomore center Tyson Chandler also had 17 points to go along with eight blocks and six rebounds. Senior guard Keith Kincade chipped in with 16 points and seven rebounds. The Dons will now play the winner of the California/Garey game on Tuesday in the second round at a site yet to be determined.

Garey 80, California 76 (OT)-- Jason Nichols of California hit two crucial free throws to send the game into overtime. It wasn't enough though as Garey (16-10) took control of the game in overtime. Edwin Thompson scored 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, and Albert Hill scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Garey to the win.

Cathedral City 64, Hemet 55--Cathedral City rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit and defeated Hemet, 64-55, in a Division II-AA first-round game. The rally helped the Lions, three-time defending champions of the Desert Valley League, avoid getting upset at home by the upstart Bulldogs, who were third in the Sunkist League. Despite going on the road to face an unfamiliar foe, the Bulldogs (13-12) looked like seasoned veterans in the first half. A.J. Voto scored 11 of his 16 points, knocking down three three-pointers. With Dan Christiansen and James Draine coming through with clutch baskets throughout the second quarter, Hemet took a 40-29 lead into halftime. Despite the lead, Boyd said he knew it would be a long second half after center Andy Day sprained his ankle going for a blocked shot. Day, who averaged about 15 points a game during the season, played only a few minutes in the second half and scored just two points. And after a spirited halftime speech from Coach Rob Hanmer, Cathedral City came out gunning in the second half. The two teams traded baskets before the Lions went on a 21-0 run, outscoring Hemet 23-2 for the quarter. The Bulldogs, already without most of its size in the middle, were overpowered by Thomas Shewmake, Cathedral City's 6-foot-9 freshman. Shewmake finished the game with eight points, 17 rebounds and nine blocked shots. The Lions led by as many as 13 in the fourth quarter before Hemet got back into it. Christiansen scored five points in seven seconds on a three-point play and two free throws to get the Bulldogs to 58-53. But Cathedral City knocked down six straight free throws to put the game away. Voto and Christiansen each scored 16 points to lead Hemet, while Draine had 14 points. Max Patrick led all scorers with 19 points for the Lions and Clifton Cooper chipped in with 13 points. HEMET (55) -- Draine 14, Voto 16, Ziegler 3, Day 2, Christiansen 16, Marquez 4. CATHEDRAL CITY (64) -- DeVance 8, Cooper 13, Patrick 19, Heredia 7, Peters 0, Alvarez 5, Smith 4, Shewmake 8. Halftime score -- Hemet 40-29. Three-point goals -- Hemet 4, Patrick 2, Cooper. Total fouls -- Hemet 18, Cathedral City 22. Fouled out -- None.

Sonora will play Cathedral City (21-6) in the second round Tuesday. The home team will be determined by coin flip this morning. The Raiders' Bim Okunrinboye made two three-pointers and Isaac Fromson hit one to give the Raiders 13 from behind the arc.  In the first quarter, Okunrinboye made a three-pointer to give the Raiders an 8-2 lead. Hawking hit one for a 16-6 advantage, Levine made two in a row, and Hawking canned another to make it 25-12. Ryan Carlos tried to keep El Dorado close. He scored 10 points in the first quarter, but Sonora had a 26-14 lead at the end of the quarter. Levine added a three-pointer and Hawking hit another as the Raiders built a 41-28 halftime lead. Okunrinboye's seven points in the third quarter pushed the Raiders to a 60-37 lead going into the final quarter. Carlos scored 10 points in the fourth to give him a game-high 28, but Sonora already had the victory locked away. Levine led the Raiders with 23 points. Hawking, son of Cal State Fullerton men's basketball coach Bob Hawking, finished with 17. Sonora's Marqui Worthy scored 15 with 10 rebounds, and Okunrinboye added 14 points.

Compton 69, Savanna 54--Compton had six players, including four starters, declared academically ineligible in the last two weeks. Four players from the junior varsity team moved up for the playoffs, including freshman Jamaar Sloan.  Junior forward Ellis Myles had 25 points, 20 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead the Tarbabes (16-8) past the Rebels in a first-round game at Savanna High. Compton broke the game open with a 18-11 third quarter that ended on a 3-pointer by freshman guard Jamaar Sloan to give the Tarbabes a 13-point lead heading into the final quarter. Junior forward Donovin Morgan, who had 12 points and six rebounds, sealed the win late in the game with several key offensive rebounds.  Solomon Brown scored 21 points for host Savanna (17-10) The Tarbabes will now play Newport Harbor on Tuesday in the second round at 7:30 p.m. at a site not yet determined.

Rancho Verde 70, El Monte 34--Moreno Valley Rancho Verde (24-4) used a full-court defense, and El Monte (13-14) connected on only 28 percent of their shots as the Mustangs won a Division II-AA game. Brandon Shaw scored 22 points, and J.S. Nash added 17 as the Mustangs scored the first 11 points and cruised to victory. Nash grabbed 15 rebounds, and Shaw dished out 11 assists. El Monte cut the lead to 15-7 at the end of the first quarter, but the Mustangs went on a 13-0 run early in the second to lead by 20 at halftime.  RANCHO VERDE (70) -- Pinnex 6, Brown 4, Shaw 22, Nash 17, Norman 10, Johnson 2, Howard 5, Singfield 2, Gant 2 EL MONTE (34) -- Orrante 18, Resendez 14, McNeil 2, Lemus 0, Dunbar 0 Halftime score -- Rancho Verde 37-17. Three-point goals -- Norman, Nash, Resendez 4. Total fouls -- Rancho Verde 9, El Monte 11. Fouled out -- none.

Brea Olinda 79, Los Amigos 54--After building a big lead, Brea Olinda's toughest challenge was trying to stay focused Friday during its lopsided 79-54 victory over Los Amigos in the Southern Section Division II-AA boys' basketball playoffs.  The third-seeded Wildcats (25-2) forced 12 turnovers in the first quarter and built a 23-4 lead, then cruised to a second-round matchup Tuesday against Buena Park.  Los Amigos (16-11), relied mostly on quickness rather than height, and had no starters taller than 6 feet.  But last night, Los Amigos attempted to slow the Wildcats with tenacious defense, but with talented point guard Kyle Dodd running the Brea offense, and the strategy failed.  Jerrett Skrifvars led Brea with 22 points. Dodd added 14 points and eight assists and Landon Lewis had 10 points.   All 15 Wildcats played, 11 scored.  Isaac Hurtado had 14 points to pace Los Amigos.

Buena Park 60, West Torrance 51--DeAndre Gipson scored 16 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter for visiting Buena Park (20-7).The visiting Coyotes (20-7) set up a second-round game against Brea Olinda. It will be played Tuesday at Buena Park High.

Gahr 49, La Serna 45--Senior guard Michael Williams scored 13 points and Darrell Handy had 11 as the Gladiators (17-10) edged the Lancers (22-4) in a first-round contest at La Serna High.  Handy made two 3-pointers midway through the fourth quarter to break a 34-34 tie. James Perkins then followed a missed shot with a basket of his own to give Gahr a commanding 42-34 lead which it never relinquished. Gahr now advances into the second round where they will play the winner of the Tustin/Perris game on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Tustin 70, Perris 69--Chris Chatman's free throw with eight seconds to go gave the Tillers (20-7) the victory at home. Chatman finished with 20 points, and the Tillers' DeAngelo Collins scored 23 with 20 rebounds.  Perris (14-11) closes out its season with the Division II-AA first-round loss.  Perris had a chance to win it, but it wasn't going to be:  Following Chatman's free throw shot which game the Tillers the one point lead, with only 8 seconds to go, Perris inbounded the ball to Lamar Waters, who went coast-to-coast but his shot rolled off the rim at the buzzer.   PERRIS (69) -- Watters 11, Zimmerman 9, Anderson 9, Spencer 6, Lloyd 14, Vinson 20.TUSTIN (70) -- Jackson 8, Crabb 7, Johnson 7, Chatman 20, Collins 23, Cordova 3, Hayes 2. Halftime score -- Perris 40-35. Three-point goals -- Spencer, Lloyd, Vinson, Chatman, Crabb, Johnson. Total fouls -- Perris 24, Tustin 21. Fouled out -- Jackson, Collins.

Pasadena 78, Torrance 63-- Pasadena employed a diamond press defense to break free from Torrance  for the win in the first round II-AA game at Pasadena.  Torrance finishes the season at 12-14, while Pasadena will play Foothill on Tuesday in the second round at a site to be determined. Pasadena, now at 22-7, survived for three quarters thanks to the inside play of Kevin Richard and Josh Duncan.  They opened the game up in the fourth quarter, outscoring Torrance 29-17 for the win. They went on an 11-0 scoring run, to open up a 58-46 lead and the difference never went below double digits the rest of the game.  Reggie Harmon had 13 ponts in the fourth quarter, 15 overall in the game. Jasun Ridley had 8 in the game.  Kevin Richard finished with 23 points, Duncan had 18, and George DeJohnette had 4.  For Torrance, Jordan Browne had 19, Brian Lockwood 13, Brent Arney 11, Sean Dudd 8, Jeff Kalama 8, and Michael Williams 4.

Foothill 77, Elsinore 68 (OT)--Despite a career-high 28 points and 18 rebounds from Josh Mativa, Elsinore could not contain Santa Ana Foothill's potent outside shooting and fell apart in overtime of a game featuring 41 fouls. By holding Elsinore to just two second-quarter field goals, Foothill seemed to have the game in control. The Knights took a 12-point advantage early in the third quarter, but the Tigers went on a 19-5 run to grab the lead at 48-45. But a couple of minutes later, Elsinore guard Kris Maxey, the Tigers' lone outside threat, went down with a pulled calf muscle and barely played the rest of the game. Foothill took advantage by collapsing on Mativa, forcing him to kick the ball outside, where Elsinore's options were limited. It is the third time in four seasons that Elsinore (21-6) has lost in the first round. The Tigers went undefeated in the Sunkist League to win the title for the third year in a row. While Elsinore shot blanks from the perimeter, Foothill fired bulls-eyes, including three jump shots on consecutive possessions to start overtime to take a 70-65 lead and put the Tigers on the defensive the rest of the way.In the final seconds of regulation, Foothill (18-9) collapsed so heavily on Mativa, he could not muscle his way out of the coverage. As he turned along the baseline to take a jumper with 12 seconds left that would have won the game, his shot was blocked by the Knights' Ryan Evans.Injuries contributed to Elsinore's shooting woes. Already missing Darren Bagwell, who broke his hand last month, the Tigers lost guard Kris Maxey late in the third quarter with a pulled calf muscle as he was called for a charge. Maxey tried to return, but quickly came out of the game. Foothill was whistled eight times in the first six minutes and 23 for the game, while Elsinore was called for 18 fouls overall. Down the stretch fouls began to play a key role, especially for Elsinore when point guard Bobby Russo, about the only healthy outside threat, picked up his fourth with 2:15 to go in the third quarter.Trailing 40-28 early in the third, Elsinore went on a 19-5 run, playing an up-tempo style, and making it a nailbiter the rest of the way. Chad Bigler's three-pointer for Foothill tied the game at 63 with 1:51 to go were the last points of regulation. In overtime, Evans' baseline jumper on the first possession put Foothill up for good. Elsinore was clearly uncomfortable playing from behind, as the Tigers rushed shots and when those didn't fall, fouled repeatedly. The Knights hit five of six late free throws to seal the victory. FOOTHILL (77) -- Weir 5, Evans 4, Rasmussen 20, Buford 21, Bigler 13, Smith 11, Henderson 3 ELSINORE (68) -- Fincher 4, W. Mativa 13, J. Mativa 28, Russo 12, Maxey 7, VanZanten 4 Halftime -- Foothill 38-29. Regulation -- 63-63. Three-point goals -- Rasmussen 3, Smith 2, Buford, Bigler, Maxey, J. Mativa, Fincher. Total fouls -- Foothill 23, Elsinore 18. Fouled out -- Russo. Technical fouls -- Bigler.

Paso Robles 61, Burroughs 54--Kevin Krose had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Brian Lee added 18 points for host Burroughs, but the Foothill League co-champions failed to recover from a 30-16 halftime deficit.

Redondo v. Agoura--This game was played Thursday night, as Redondo defeated Agoura.
