Upper Bracket

Serra 63, Laguna Beach 45-- Serra's boys basketball team took it to top-seeded Laguna Beach early and often as the Cavaliers used a balanced attack to bring down the Artists in a 63-45 CIF Division IV-AA playoff game at Dominguez. Doyle Cole led Serra with a team-high 14 points as the Cavaliers advanced to the semifinals Friday against the winner of St. Paul and Marshall. Aerick Sanders totaled 13 points for Serra, which bolted to a 23-13 lead after one quarter of play. Ryan Odums and Earl Lewis each tallied 12 points as Serra improved to 16-12. The Artists finish their season 20-7. Serra advances to play St. Paul, a 66-64 winner over Marshall in overtime, in the semifinals Friday.

St. Paul 66, Marshall 64 (OT)--Marshall's expected advantage with its inside game never materialized and the Eagle's season came to an end with a 66-64 loss in overtime to host St. Paul.  The teams battled to a 60-60 tie at the end of regulation and then Marshall's offense went cold.  the Eagles made only one of 10 field goal attempts in the overtime period while St. Paul hit all three of its shots. Marshall had the ball at the end of both regulation and overtime, but couldn't convert either time. Marshall called timeouts on both occasions, trying to get the ball to Brian Holifield, but each time, instead of driving, he opted for 3-point attmes and each time he missed.  Chris Bennett got the rebound, but his follow attempt in the overtime was blocked and time expired.  Alex Villegas got the game winning layup off a pretty feed under the basket by Holloway with 22.3 seconds to play.  The win moved St. Paul (17-12) into Friday night's semifinal against Serra.  Marshall, which finished at 20-7,  a record which included an Alpha League title, held a 60-57 lead with 35 seconds to play, but Holloway's 3 point basket with 12.9 seconds in regulation, tied the game and sent it to overtime. Marshall led at the end of the first quarter 20-18, and then took a slim 32-30 lead at the half.
