Upper Bracket Games

Artesia 89, San Gabriel 41--The Pioneers used 18 points apiece from sophomore forwards Jack Martinez and Amaury Fernandez in a second-round victory over the Matadores at San Gabriel High. Artesia, the No. 14-ranked team in the nation, improved to 27-2 with the win and will now play Eisenhower, a 83-73 winner over Lynwood, in the quarterfinals on Friday. Sophomore forward Jason Kapono continued his stellar season, scoring 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Ryan Reyes also chipped in with 10 points in the win. The Pioneers broke the game open with a 22-2 run in the second half and never looked back.

Eisenhower 83, Lynwood 73-- The Eagles, behind Trenell Eddings' game-high 30 points, knocked Lynwood out of the CIF Southern Section Division I-AA playoffs with an 83-73 victory. Lynwood  finishes the season with a 17-11 record. Despite playing with the flu, Lenoir, who fouled out with 2:44 to play, finished with 15 points. The battle of point guards easily went to Eddings, who scored five points and guided the Eagles (22-6) to a 21-8 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter was much the same, as Eisenhower, who will play top-seeded Artesia in the next round, improved its lead to 37-18 on Bobby Wilson's 3-point play with 2:52 remaining until halftime. But the Knights put together a 10-0 run to cut into the lead and trailed 39-28 at intermission. Keyawn Floyd, who had 13 points in the first half, exploded for 14 in the third quarter to get the Knights within striking distance, 60-52, at the end of the period. With 3:50 to go in the game, Lenoir made a pair of free throws to get Lynwood within five, 70-65, the closest it had been since early in the first quarter. But Eddings was too much down the stretch, scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter to fend off and eliminate the Knights, who also got 12 points from William Welch and 10 more from Kenzie Moore. The Eagles also got double-figure scoring from Calvin Afualo (20) and Darin Ang (10). Lynwood tried several defenses in attempt to stop Rialto Eisenhower's high-scoring guard Trenell Eddings and each has the same success rate -- poor. The Eagles (22-6) will need another big game from Eddings, the diminutive point guard who was last year's San Bernardino County Player of the Year, to knock off Artesia (27-2), which is ranked 13th by USA Today. Defending champion Artesia defeated Eisenhower, 77-71, in the quarterfinals last season. Lynwood started in a man defense, then switched to a box-and-one when Eddings hit two quick jumpers. With the Knights concentrating on Eddings, Darun Ang and Calvin Afualo hit three-pointers as Eisenhower took a 21-8 lead at the end of the quarter. With Eisenhower leading 37-18, Lynwood went back to man defense and started to press to change the tempo. The Knights went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 39-28 at halftime. The Eagles maintained at least an eight-point lead throughout the third quarter and put the game in Eddings' hands in the fourth. Eisenhower spread out the court and let Eddings try to beat his defender and drive to the basket. Eddings do so often, scoring 13 points in the quarter. Afualo scored 20 points and Ang had 10 points and 13 rebounds. Keyawn Floyd scored 27 points to lead Lynwood, but he was held scoreless in the fourth quarter after scoring 14 points in the third. Point guard Gary Lenoir, whose quickness hurt the Eagles, scored 15 points, but was in foul trouble throughout and fouled out with 2:44 left in the fourth. EISENHOWER (83) -- Owens 6, Eddings 30, Afualo 20, Wilson 7, Ang 10, Hart 2, A.Rouzan 2, James 2, Franklin 4. LYNWOOD (73) -- Lenoir 15, Floyd 27, Kensie 0, Bluitt 6, Moore 10, Burns 1, Welch 12, Raglin 2. Halftime score -- Eisenhower 39-28. Three-point goals -- Afualo 3, Eddings 2, Ang, Floyd 3, Bluitt 2. Total fouls -- Eisenhower 16, Lynwood 19. Fouled out -- Lenoir.

Ayala 72, Upland 65-- Jack May stood there at the free throw line, contemplating the horror of it all. Ayala High School's 21-point lead had been erased by Upland, the Inland Valley's top-ranked team. The Bulldogs' incredible home record of 63-2 was in peril. And this was possibly the final 1:38 of May's high school career. May's fear wasn't detectable to the naked eye Tuesday night. He coolly knocked down two free throws, then watched teammate D.J. Lucas ice the Highlanders with 6-of-6 free-throw shooting in the final 1:34 as sixth-ranked Ayala pulled off a 72-65 victory in a CIF Southern Section Division 1AA second-round playoff game. The win propels Ayala (20-8) to Friday's quarterfinal round, where the Bulldogs will meet Long Beach Jordan, a 69-50 winner over Santa Maria Tuesday, at an alternate site to be determined today.   Upland's season ends with a 23-4 record. Ayala buried Upland in the first half, holding a 44-23 halftime lead. The Bulldogs made 7-of-9 3-pointers in the half and shot 16-of-25 (64 percent) from the field while the Highlanders committed 14 turnovers. Ayala swingman Marcel Burke was 4-of-4 in the first quarter with two 3-pointers; reserve guard Marc McCoy was 4-of-4 with three 3-pointers in the second quarter. The law of averages caught up to Bulldog shooters in the third quarter. They missed 11 of 16 attempts while Upland's 6-foot-6, 225-pound senior forward Desmond Penigar awoke with eight of his 24 points. The Bulldogs' 10-point lead after three quarters was shaved to 60-58 on a pair of Colin Strand free throws with 2:38 remaining. Penigar, who finished with 11 rebounds, then made a sweeping baseline move to score a layup and draw a foul with 1:47 left. His free throw gave Upland its first, and only, lead of the night, 61-60. Following May's go-ahead free throws, Lucas stole the ball and dribbled to the other end before being fouled. It was Upland's only turnover in the second half. Strand missed two 3-pointers in the final minute and Lucas swished all six of his free throws. UPLAND (65)  Strand 11, Penigar 24, Santos 2, Pace 7, Hamilton 2, Pruitt 11, Harris 6, Musa 2. AYALA (72) May 23, Pacana 5, Burke 14, Sherman 2, Jones 4, Lucas 8, McCoy 14, Stephens 2. Upland 11 12 22 20 -- 65 Ayala 20 24 11 17 -- 72 Total fouls: U 15, A 17. Fouled out: Penigar (U), Sherman (A). Technical fouls: Penigar (U).

Long Beach Jordan 69, Santa Maria 50-- The Panthers had 23 blocked shots as a team and Craig Calloway led all scorers with 19 points as Jordan advanced into the quarterfinals with a win over the Saints (17-8) at Santa Maria High. Santa Maria's tallest player was only 6-foot-2 and the Saints were no match for Jordan, which dominated play on the inside all game long. The Panthers broke the game open with a 22-6 third quarter. Darren Peterson also had 18 points and Trevon Bryant chipped in with 16. Jordan, which improved to 23-6, will now play Ayala, which defeated
Upland, 72-65, on Friday in the quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m.

Lower Bracket Games

Corona Centennial 84, Fontana 75-- Corona Centennial High reached a new level of success Tuesday, defeating Fontana, 84-75, in a California Interscholastic Federation Division 1AA second round playoff game. Mountain View League champion Centennial (18-7) reached the quarterfinals for the first time. The Huskies will play Moreno Valley Valley View at a site to be determined. Centennial used a half-court trapping defense to force Citrus Belt League champion Fontana (19-9) to turn the ball over 17 times in the first half as the Huskies built a 43-33 lead. The Steelers, who were unsuccessful in full-court pressing Centennial, lost the ball 23 times total.  Popov said the victory is the best in the program's 10 seasons.  Centennial's Jamaal Williams, who led all scorers with 21 points, took advantage of Fontana's final turnover to put in a short jump shot to thwart a comeback effort and give the Huskies a 78-73 lead with 45 seconds left. Centennial sealed the victory when Demetreus Ross and Bryan Williams each hit a pair of free throws, and Stephen Adams dunked just before the final buzzer. Both teams were sloppy in the first quarter, combining for 15 turnovers. But the Huskies took advantage to build a 23-21 lead. Fontana's Joseth Dawson hit three of his five three-point baskets in the first quarter. Jamaal Williams, who said many of the Fontana players were childhood friends, led Centennial's charge in the second quarter, scoring nine points as the Huskies pulled away. The Steelers turned the ball over nine times. Bryan Gonzales hit a three-point basket to spark a 9-0 run to close out the period. A layup by Ross gave Centennial a 60-49 lead late in the third quarter, but Jamaal Williams had to leave the game with his fourth foul. He came back with about four minutes left in the game. Gary Holmes' layup with 2:15 left cut Centennial's lead to 76-73. Fontana did not make another basket. FONTANA (75) -- Holmes 11, Walker 11, Baker 10, Stephenson 10, Anderson 15, Dawson 18. CENTENNIAL (84) -- Seals 4, Sybesma 12, Gonzales 9, J. Williams 21, Adams 12, B. Williams 8, Ross 18. Halftime score -- Centennial 43-33. Three-point goals -- Dawson 5, Gonzales 2, Stephenson, Baker. Total fouls -- Fontana 18, Centennial 18. Fouled out -- Holmes, Anderson, Peppers. Technical fouls -- none.

Valley View 73, Capistrano Valley 61--Moreno Valley Valley View (21-7) led wire to wire against the No. 3 ranked team in Division 1AA, advancing to the quarterfinals for the second time. Valley View will face Corona Centennial. A coin flip will determine the home team. Valley View broke the game open at the start of the second half, forcing nine turnovers in five minutes and increasing its lead from two to 15 points. Isaac Russ had three of his six steals, and five Eagles scored, during the run. Point guard Mark Peters finished with 16 points, five assists and three steals. The Eagles overcame a 30-point, 13-rebound effort by Capistrano Valley's 6-foot-7 J.J Sola. The Cougars (21-8) played without their primary outside shooter, Nathan Hair, who injured his knee in the first round. VALLEY VIEW (73) -- Peters 16, Hampton 14, Dupree 14, Russ 13, Logan 2, Mann 14. CAPISTRANO VALLEY (61) -- Pace 0, McDaniel 0, Stowell 20, Cangelosi 4, Sola 30, Earnest 5, Sweany 2. Halftime score -- Valley View 28-26. Three-point goals -- Peters 2, Hampton 2, Russ 2, Stowell, Earnest, Sola. Total fouls -- Valley View 13, Capistrano Valley 13. Fouled out -- none.

Ontario 71, Los Alamitos 51--Jason Burrell scored 24 points and Mike Niles added 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists as the Jaguars (25-3) defeated the Griffins in a second-round game at Los Alamitos High. Los Alamitos trailed early, 23-13, after one quarter of play and could never mount any kind of comeback. The Griffins were led by senior guard Andrew Pleick, who had 21 points. Jeff Grgas also scored 10 in the loss. Los Alamitos finished its season with a mark of 20-8. Ontario got off to a quick start, taking a 10-point lead after one quarter and going on to rout host Los Alamitos. The Jaguars will play No. 2 seed Long Beach Poly at an alternate site of Ontario's choosing on Friday. Jason Burrell also led the Jaguars with four steals and four assists. Micah James had 10 points and seven assists and Chris Burns had 10 rebounds and 10 blocked shots. Long Beach Poly 65, Oxnard 46-- Wesley Stokes, Poly High's heart and soul, struggled a bit in the first half of Tuesday's CIF Southern Section Division I-AA second-round game against visiting Oxnard. But, in the second half, the 5-foot-10 point guard was virtually flawless. Needless to say, it was the second-half play which keyed the Jackrabbits' 65-46 victory.  It took just over a minute for Poly (22-6) to extend a 21-19 halftime lead to a nine-point advantage as Stokes fed Jonathan Harper for a 3-pointer and short jumper and Shea Anderson nailed two free throws. By the time the third period ended, Poly enjoyed a 43-31 advantage. Any chance of an Oxnard comeback ended in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter when Stokes scored nine points and Anderson chipped in with two buckets to help the Jackrabbits take a 56-36 lead with 3:58 remaining. Poly, a CIF finalist the last two years, then could start thinking about a quarterfinal matchup with Ontario, which knocked off Los Alamitos, 71-51. Stokes scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half and also had eight assists and four steals, Anderson had 10 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots, Chuck Jones came off the bench to contribute a solid nine points and seven rebounds and Harper added 10 points with all of them coming after halftime. The Jackrabbits jumped out to an 8-2 lead but Oxnard (21-7) chipped away and eventually took a 19-18 lead after a 3-pointer by Jacob Galloway late in the first half. Jones made a free throw and six-footer to give the Jackrabbits the halftime lead and Poly ran away in the second half.
