Glendora 71, La Sierra 47-- Riverside La Sierra coach Ted Hollister had one goal entering Tuesday's game against defending California Interscholastic Federation Division 1A champion Glendora. Perfection. The Eagles couldn't achieve that goal as Glendora advanced to the quarterfinals with a 71-47 victory at Ramona High School. Casey Jacobsen scored 31 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Glendora (29-1). La Sierra (15-12) missed its first seven shots before Ed Clayton hit a free throw with 4:02 remaining in the first quarter. The Eagles trailed by seven at halftime. Reggie Hill led the Eagles with 14 points, four rebounds and four steals off the bench. Josh Hiltbruner and Jamaar Walker each added nine points, and Josh Powis grabbed seven rebounds. Clayton and Hill each scored four points in the second quarter as La Sierra went on a 6-0 run to end the half. "In the first half, we were playing on our heels, and they cut the court in half by using the clock to their advantage," Jacobsen said. "We prefer to run and knew we had to make an adjustment at halftime." That adjustment came as Jacobsen scored 15 points in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 51-30. La Sierra made 35 percent of its shots and was outrebounded 32-21. Glendora's Chris Clark led all rebounders with 10. GLENDORA (71) -- Jacobsen 31, Chr. Clark 13, Ahmed 11, Cha. Clark 5, Hatch 0, Davis 9, Giles 2 LA SIERRA (47) -- Calvillo 4, Clayton 8, Hiltbruner 9, Walker 9, Powis 2, Hill 14, Avila 1 Halftime score -- Glendora 26-19. Three-point goals -- Jacobsen 5, Davis, Hiltbruner 3. Total fouls -- Glendora 12, La Sierra 16. Fouled out -- none.

Nogales 59, Katell 54--Matt Tisthammer scored 15 points to lead Katella, but the Knights (21-7) were outscored, 16-6, in the fourth quarter.  Moreno Valley 73, University 57--Andy Lawrence had 22 points, including six three-pointers, and Chet Johnson had 21 for host University (17-10). Moreno Valley is 20-7.

Santa Barbara 58, J.W. North 53--Riverside North was outrebounded 35-23 and, as a result, was knocked out of the Division 1A playoffs by underdog Santa Barbara (24-5). The Huskies (20-6) led 19-14 after the first quarter but only scored five points in the second quarter. Santa Barbara began to control the rebounds and quickened the pace, which was what Dons coach Jeff Lavender did not think he would be able to do, especially because Santa Barbara's best player, Tony Freeman, was hobbled with a calf injury. "For us to absorb a 19-point first quarter and come back like that was tremendous," Lavender said. North was forced to slow down the tempo because of a lack of rebounds. "We knew that whoever controlled the tempo would win," North coach Mike Bartee said. "It appeared as if they wanted it more. They were more aggressive, and once they started getting the rebounds, they controlled the tempo." Point guard Raji Burnett's banked three-pointer pulled North to within three points with nine seconds left, but Santa Barbara inbounded and Shawn Kelly was fouled. Kelly made the first of two free throws for the clincher. Burnett's six three-pointers accounted for all 18 of his points. Derek Mgbeke also added 18 points for North, which made it to the Division 1A semifinals last season and had won 16 consecutive games. SANTA BARBARA (58) -- Thompson 0, Maloney 2, B.Williams 23, Christ 11, Kelly 8, Shelton 5, Whilt 3, Burke 2, Freeman 4. NORTH (53) -- Burnett 18, Jones 7, Mgbeke 18, Carlyle 0, Dixon 6, Walker 4. Halftime score -- Santa Barbara 25-24. Three-point goals -- Freeman, B.Williams 4, Christ, Burnett 6, Jones, Mgbeke 2. Total fouls -- Santa Barbara 6, North 16. Fouled out -- none.

San Bernardino Pacific 98, San Clemente 93 (OT)-- Pacific (21-4) outscored San Clemente, 32-25, in the fourth quarter to force an overtime.   Triton point guard Ivan Cruz fouled out late in the fourth, enabling Pacific to capitalize. The Pirates' Mike Hall had 26 points, and James Burries added 25
points and 19 rebounds. San Clemente's Mitchell Pierce scored 30 points. San Clemente (18-9) had a 19-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but fourth-seeded San Bernardino Pacific rallied and tied the game with 41 seconds left in regulation when Chaun Ballard hit a 10-foot leaner in the paint to send the game into overtime at 81-81. Mike Hall scored nine of his team-high 26 points in overtime for the Pirates. James Burries added 25 points and 19 rebounds. Mitch Pierce led San Clemente with 30 points, seven rebounds and nine assists. Pacific plays Santa Barbara in the quarterfinals Friday at a site to be determined by a coin flip.  PACIFIC (98) -- Hall 26, Burries 25, Smith 20, Ballard 19, Jury 5, Weber 2, Terrell 1. SAN CLEMENTE (93) -- Pierce 30, Tatala 19, George 18, Straley 11, Cruz 6, Garrett 5, Martinez 2, Sleener 2. Halftime score -- Pacific 45-35. Regulation score -- 81-81. Three-point goals -- Hall 3, Ballard, Straley 2, Geoirge, Pierce. Fouled out -- Cruz, George, Smith.

Lower Bracket

Simi Valley 60, Troy 50--Troy led, 41-40, with five minutes left in the fourth quarter but Simi Valley capitalized on free-throw opportunities, making eight of nine in the quarter. Rafael Berumen scored 24 points for Simi Valley (26-2) and Jerry Inzunza had 21 for host Troy (18-11). Averting an upset that would have spelled an end to its championship quest, the Simi Valley High boys' basketball team relied on a healthy dose of poise and Berumen in the fourth quarter to escape with a 60-50 victory over host Troy High Tuesday night in the second round of the CIF-SS Division I-A playoffs.  With his club trailing by a point with just over seven minutes left, the 6-foot-9 Berumen knocked home a jumper to put his club up for good at 42-41.  He put in a rebound basket on the next trip down the floor, later finished off a key, three-point play and tallied 10 of his game-high 24 points in the final period to help third-seeded Simi Valley (27-2) advance to Friday's quarterfinals. Simi Valley will take on Ventura in the quarterfinals Friday.  Facing a stunning end to its season, Simi Valley could count on Berumen to take control.  Branduinn Fullove, returning from an injured right ankle, scored 14 points and Dustin Villepigue finished with 10 points. Shaun Michel notched five points, five assists and six steals, while Brett Michel scored five points.  With its season on the line, pressed to the max by a hot-shooting second-half from Troy (17-11) and senior guard Jerry Inzunza, Simi Valley reached down for its reservoir of poise. Brett Michel buried a 3-pointer to put Simi Valley up by four with 3:53 left, and Fullove notched two free throws with 30 seconds remaining to finally put the game on ice.  To survive on this night, Simi Valley staved off a hot-shooting third period by Troy. With Inzunza scoring 13 of his team-high 21 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, Troy turned a 31-18 halftime deficit into a one-point disadvantage at 40-39.  Using its quickness to seemingly outhustle and outjump the taller Pioneers, Troy grabbed the lead at 41-40 at the top of the fourth period when 6-3 Sean Christensen tipped in a basket.  Thereafter, Berumen and Simi Valley responded.  His short jumper restored the lead for Simi Valley. His three-point play with 3:17 remaining, on a spin move and layup, gave his club a four-point lead at 50-46.

Ventura 64, Loara 59--Jeff Staniland's 31 points led Ventura High's boys basketball team to a 64-59 CIF Southern Section playoff victory over Loara High of Anaheim. His clutch shooting in the final minutes of the game was the difference.  Ventura will play Simi Valley at a site to be determined on Friday.
Simi Valley defeated Troy 60-50 in Fullerton.  In the frenetic final minutes, Staniland scored seven points and kept a proud Saxon team from stealing the victory. With a raucous crowd behind him, Staniland clinched the game with two free throws with two seconds remaining.  It was the first time in four games that Ventura has finished in regulation. And the stressful recent past may have helped the Cougars as the pressure cooker of playoff basketball descended on the Bob Tuttle Gymnasium.  Ventura led 61-58 after Staniland converted a pair of free throws with 34.1 seconds remaining. In the final half-minute, Loara blew two huge chances. First, it made only one of two free throws with 29.9 seconds on the clock, then a key charging foul against the Saxons put Staniland at the free throw line with two seconds remaining.  Staniland was perfect on 14 free throw chances, part of a key statistic for the winners. Ventura, playing at home, hit 19 of 21 free throws against Loara's 20 of 27. Loara outrebounded Ventura 31-35.   Ventura started like a house afire, racing out to a 12-4 lead. But Loara doggedly came back, drawing to within 31-30 at the half. Loara briefly took a lead in the third quarter, but Ventura's defensive pressure and Staniland's consistent offense turned the tide back toward the home team.

Moreno Valley 73, University 57--Jerome Beasley scored 13 of Moreno Valley's first 17 points as the Vikings rallied from an early 13-5 deficit in a Division 1A second-round game. "He helped us get off the line early in the game," said Vikings coach John Dahl. Moreno Valley (20-7) closed the first quarter on a 7-0 run and went up by 13 points in the second half. "We got settled in," Dahl said. Beasley finished with 26 points. Bryen Emmanuel added 11. The Vikings will play Friday against Santa Ana Mater Dei in the quarterfinals. The site will be determined today by a coin flip. Andy Lawrence led Irvine University (18-10) with 22 points, including six three-pointers. Chet Johnson added 21. The Vikings most recently made it to the quarterfinals in 1995 and 1996.  MORENO VALLEY (73) -- Lands 8, Hayes 9, Emmanuel 11, Brown 6, Beasley 26, Trapp 4, Smith 1, Brooks 3, Taylor 5.   UNIVERSITY (57) -- Shivers 4, Lawrence 22, Brown 6, Johnson 21, Dale 3, Zinchefsky 1. Halftime score -- Moreno Valley 34-24. Three-point goals -- Lawrence 6, Johnson 3. Total fouls -- Moreno Valley 12, University 18. Fouled out -- Johnson, Dale.

Mater Dei 64, Villa Park 48--Steve Scoggin scored 17 points and Mike Bayer had 12 to lead Mater Dei to a 64-48 victory over Villa Park in the second round of the Southern Section Division I-A boys' basketball playoffs Tuesday at Villa Park. The Monarchs (28-3) held Villa Park to four points in the second quarter. Andy Olsen scored 10 points to lead the Spartans (19-9). Mater Dei plays Moreno Valley in a quarterfinal game Friday.
